How long have you gone without verbal communication?
Dame6089 replied to sayitwell's topic in Language Learning
Maybe a day at most. Even days where I was alone, I would usually go get lunch somewhere and have to talk to the workers. That isn't substantial communication, but it is still verbal communication. -
Comedy can be tough. The issue is that a lot of jokes are culture specific and won't make sense or be funny to another culture. Another issue is that jokes can be based off of language and will obviously not work in a different language.

Which English words do you have trouble spelling?
Dame6089 replied to a topic in English Language | Discussion
Words with double letter always catch me up. Tomorrow is probably the best example. I have spelt that word in about as many as you could possibly imagine. -
What is the one mistake that you can't stand in English? Personally, I hate when people use "ignorant" to mean "rude". It is actually comical because they are being ignorant by misusing the word ignorant.

I usually read at a steady pace. I tend to get tongue tied, so I try not to read too quickly. There is no need to read quickly out loud. The whole point of reading out loud is to have people understand what you are saying.

I think technology definitely has something to do with it. I myself use abbreviations, but that doesn't mean I do not know how to smell. I too am annoyed when people can't tell the difference between their, they're, and there. That is just basic grammar.

It really depends on the quality of the dub. Typically the Japanese voice actors are better. On occassion though, I prefer the American voice actors. For example, I can only watch the dubbed version of Rurouni Kenshin because I cannot stand Kenshin's voice in Japanese.

Thank you! Just so you know, there are side by side versions of Shakespeare. We used one in my highschool to read Romeo and Juliet.

Huh, that is really interesting! I would imagine that less than half of native speakers know this. I know all of my college educated friends use each other incorrectly as well. I guess it is one of those rules that just slips under the radar.

Do you find that workbooks help?
Dame6089 replied to RomanAnthonysMama's topic in Spanish Language | Discussion
I think work books are good when you are learning basic grammar and vocabulary. After that though, you are better reading literature or academic books in a particular language. There are so many nuances to every language that you can't always pick up from doing work books. -
I really enjoy certain dialects of Spanish and French. I also kind of enjoy Japanese when spoken by women on Japanese tv. It has a weird calming affect to it.

I love slang. At the end of the day, language is situational and brings people together. If you are in an area that uses certain slang words, go with it! That makes your neighborhood unique and allows you to communicate more effectively because everyone is using the same words.

Is this true? I have always been under the impression that you could use "each other" with more than 2 people. Not arguing with you, just generally interested. Is there a rule or something for why you can't use "each other" with more than 2 people?

I'm quite fond of nostalgia. I'm not sure if others find it beautiful, but I do. I think I enjoy the word because of the meaning. I love being nostalgic and thinking back to great memories in my life.

Many UK universities abandoning foreign languages
Dame6089 replied to Daedalus's topic in Language Learning
It is really a shame, but that is the way it goes. You can't cut budgets from more important subjects like English and Math. You can live without being bilingual. It's much harder to live without knowing english or math. -
I haven't read Don Quijote since high school. I would like to read it again, but don't to translate every word. Is there a side by side spanish english version of Don Quijote? If not, what is the best english translation of the book?

How good are you at recognizing languages?
Dame6089 replied to Czarownica's topic in Language Learning
I'm honestly not great. I can recognize Japanese and Spanish, but that is because I am familiar with them. I can also recognize italian and portuguese because they are similar to spanish. Anything else though, and I am taking a blind guess. -
Using subtitles from foreign movies to learn a new language
Dame6089 replied to Preya_M's topic in Language Learning
It can be useful. Especially of you are already familiar with the movie in English. I remember that we watched Lion King in my spanish class. I new that movie so well that I was able to connect the Spanish parts to the english parts in my mind. It was a really awesome way to learn! -
Great question? I noticed that my English had gotten worse when I was learning Spanish. I would just forget how to say basic words in English. It was kind of comical really because I was taking one step forward with Spanish, but taking one step back with English. It was like I wasn't improving at all.

Do you ever wish that you were a native speaker of a different language? I love english, but definitely see it's flaws when I learn other languages. Still, I have a sense of pride and comfort with my english. That is just me though. Are there any times when you wish you were a native speaker of something else?

What is your favorite foreign film. I have seen a few in Japanese, but most of the foreign films I have seen are in Spanish. My favorite is probbaly "El secreto de sus ojos". It is an awesome crime thriller.
