  1. Thanks for all the great responses everyone! I had to disappear for a while but I am back and am very excited about this post. I think growing up cursing worse than a sailor I don't see them as rude, vulgar or even bad so I can understand if the Japanese "curse" words are pretty much just rude or vulgar because I never really saw these words as vulgar or rude but more along the lines of exaggerating an emotion.
  2. So I had to stray away from learning for quite a few months and am looking into picking back up again. My question is how would you all pick up again if you had to and if you have before, what did you do to get back on track? I remember almost all of the Hiragana and Katakana and maybe 2-6 Kanji (thank you kanjiDamage) as well as some conversational Japanese but I am also curious if any new products that are blowing away the competition have come out in the time that I have been gone. Any input?
  3. I really like the idea of recording yourself. Living in a smaller town, I'm sure I could count the Japanese speakers here on my two hands. I had tried a website which I don't want to name without much success but it just wasn't my style. I know that there are some apps on iOs that you can language exchange on but I didn't have much success with them either. I'm going to have to start recording myself! Thanks for the ideas everyone!
  4. 15 lol but I'm just starting too. Been using the Kanji Damage course on Memrise and I have to say, I am intimidated by the kanji. I think that the number 2000 sways above my head making it seem worse than it really is.
  5. Like you, I too am a huge fan of the general culture of Japan. Here where I live I know of one person who speaks Japanese but that isn't stopping me. I hope to one day take the wife and child over there to visit and I wouldn't want to go without speaking the language. Also, I already speak Spanish too and being that the syllable combinations sound similar, it seems to be easier for me to pick up. Remembering the syllabaries has proven a bit difficult for me but I still try to study any chance I get.
  6. I'm surprised nobody has listed this app yet. I use it mostly for learning Japanese but from time to time I also use it for brushing up on my Spanish. I guess you can say it is kind of like Duolingo except you get to choose which course you would like to learn. There are points and you can share your progress on social networks as well. You can register online first (recommended) and then sync up the app on your mobile device. My favorite thing about Memrise is that there is more to learn than just languages, you really just need to see it for yourself. Oh and the courses are written by other users so you get a chance to learn slang and other things. Seriously, go and check it out! www.memrise.com
  7. こんばんは and welcome to the forum! Yo tambien hablo Engles y Espanol pero no escribo bien en Espanol lol. Also, 私は少し日本語を理解していますそれでも勉強. I'm not gonna lie, I used Google Translate for the Japanese lol but I am learning. Still on trying to nail down my かたかな。 I'd like to hear about how you learned three languages if you'd like to share!
  8. Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you've been well exposed to other cultures and not just languages. That is awesome! I hope to immerse myself into Japanese soon, I'm still looking for local friends that are Japanese. Enjoy the forum and let me know if I can help you in any way!
  9. Welcome to the forum! I would like to advise checking both of them out and see which one feels better for you. A long time ago I started to learn French but found I just didn't mesh well with it at the time. I want to go back to it eventually but I'm learning Japanese now. Can I ask how else will you be learning the language other than just this forum?
  10. Welcome to the forum! I definitely want to hear some of those horror stories. I myself have seen a few at work except for it was with Spanish and a coworker from West Africa. Anyhoot, welcome again!
  11. As I was growing up, the first words I learned in Spanish as a five year old were the curse words that I repeated after hearing my grandfather say them. My grandparents had a laugh of course but that sparked my Spanish learning lessons. So to keep a tradition of my own, I'd like to learn some Japanese curses. Can anyone help me out?
  12. La persona arriba de mi no tiene idea de cómo traducir correctamente. She sells sea shells down by the sea shore.
  13. Welcome! You will definitely find some super useful stuff here to help you out. One of those things is me! I grew up speaking English and Spanish so feel free to message me si queres (if you like). I'd be more than happy to help in any way that I can. Again, welcome to the forum!
  14. I cannot believe that no one replied to you! I always suggest using Memrise.com. It isn't software but it is free to use and there is more than just different languages to learn there. Once you register an account and start a course, it will look and feel like software. There are even apps so you can study on the go. YES the apps sync up with the online profile you use. There is also a paid service but that is optional and will not hinder your learning experience. Take a look and let me know what you think!
  15. Okay, let me just say that the quality of the video was HORRIBLE!!! Now that that's out of the way, they make some of the same arguments I use when speaking about learning a second language. Here in New Mexico, out of the English speaking community, there are two different types of people. Those that embrace Spanish as a second language and learn or at least remember some key phrases. And then there are the "This is America dag nabbit. I shoudn't have to learn another language. Speak English or go back to your country" kind of people. All can say is that life is so much easier knowing two languages. I'm currently working on three. And there are so many resources for us out there that are free! I gotta say I could barely watch the video but I agree with it 100%!!!
