Should languages be taught in that language?
Timeisrelative replied to Bob's topic in Language Learning
Not in the start when you are first starting out. Maybe eventually when you get a bit better at it. But yea I think it should especially when talking it helps a lot when you have to come up with an answer orally. -
Are You More Comfortable Writing In Your Native Language?
Timeisrelative replied to Baburra's topic in Language Learning
For me at least it have gotten to the point where I'm so comfortable with writing in my second language too. So it does not really matter what language I write in, it comes natural to me now. -
Which Language Would You Consider Easiest To Learn?
Timeisrelative replied to jcannon's topic in Language Learning
I would say English because it's the international language. And English seems to be everywhere you go. Whether it's the TV or the internet you will likely come across English. So that said it's easier getting your English to use than lets say Arabic. -
Do you ever forget some words in your native language?
Timeisrelative replied to Qamra's topic in Language Learning
Yes it happens more times that I care to admit. Usually when I'm in a conversation with my friends I sometimes can't remember the word in my native language. And I normally just say it in the foreign language anyway because I know they will understand. -
movies with subtitles help in improving or not.?
Timeisrelative replied to lovely's topic in English Language | Discussion
It depends on what level you are on. But I would say it is helpful in most cases. Then you can listen closely to words at the same time as you read them. You will get better at pronunciation and spelling of the words. Especially if you watch closely and focus on both. -
What Language Do You Think In?
Timeisrelative replied to LindaKay's topic in English Language | Discussion
I'm from Norway and I usually communicate in English. And I often find myself thinking in English almost more often than Norwegian. I'm just so used to talking in English that it comes natural to think in English for me. I do it unconsciously and sometimes I notice it and think. Hey I just thought in English, oh well and then I continue thinking in English. -
Is English part of your education?
Timeisrelative replied to betita03's topic in English Language | Discussion
Well it was a part of my education. Right now I'm finished with English, and I kind of miss it. But to be honest I felt like I mastered English quite well so I guess it is good for me to start on another language. -
I feel very anxious, and try to remember everything I know about the subject. I would usually just read a book before the exam to come the nerves and get into the zone.

I don't generally like grammar Nazis. I think you should just talk properly and people will notice how you talk. So instead of correcting them you will influence them.

Do you think online tutorials are effective?
Timeisrelative replied to Judhie's topic in English Language | Discussion
Yea I think some of them can be great for learning new words and grammar and so on. But when it comes to pronunciation I firmly believe it is better to learn it with some friends, and talk the language. -
I would consider myself quite average. Lately I've started to read books regularly and I've noticed already that I'm getting faster at reading.

What started your interest in learning languages?
Timeisrelative posted a topic in Language Learning
For me at least I loved to be able to communicate to other people, when I was on vacations in foreign countries. It's always fun to visit a country and being seen as a foreigner and how surprised they are when I speak their language. -
At first it may seem boring trying to learn the grammar and pronunciations an so on. But when you actually get good enough to speak complete sentences with decent pronunciations, that's when it gets fun for me. Especially if you sit in a bar and someone talks loudly in a foreign language thinking you can't understand what they are saying. And you are just sitting there mildly amused, that sums it up for me at least.

I personally like to study by myself alone. It is when I'm alone I really get concentrated on the task at hand. Other than that it is also nice sometimes to study with friends so that you can speak to eachother in the language you are learning.

When did you start to learn a second language?
Timeisrelative replied to cbintz's topic in Language Learning
I started learning English when I was 9 years old. Right now I English is the language that I'm the most fluent in, other than my native language of course. I highly recommend learning a language from an early age as it will make it a lot easier. -
What are your thoughts on google translate?
Timeisrelative replied to Cutler4Life's topic in Translations (Theory & Practice)
I think Google translate is great when you're on the go and need to figure out a word quickly. But if you are studying a language trying to learn the grammar properly I would suggests a different translator. -
What is Hardest- Reading, Writing, or Speaking?
Timeisrelative replied to tulosai's topic in Language Learning
For me it's the speaking which is the hardest part and let me explain why. When you read or write you are by yourself and can use time and effort to really concentrate on the subject and give it your 100%. But when you are speaking you have to come up with the correct words in the right order and right pronunciation quite fast as you're probably speaking to someone. -
I would love to learn Spanish. Spanish is so widely just around the world that I think that would be the most logical language for me to learn next. I just need to get my German properly first. German grammar is not easy!

Your favorite English Quotes

"The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were to achieve something beyond themselves". -Alan Watts. This I feel like more people need to know. Many people usually gets depressed by trying to achieve more and more when they miss the greater aspect of life which is to enjoy it in the moment just being alive.
