  1. I'm not a teacher, I am a student, but reading through the posts here has helped me think of more ways to motivate myself and keep myself on track when learning new languages. I think if I had to add something I would say use stories. Especially when teaching children. Everyone loves a good story and I think it would really make a positive impact with the kids.
  2. I've only ever used duolingo on my pc so I really have never experienced the frustration that you are talking about. I love the app and I think that it's especially great for beginners. I am currently using a different app but duolingo is still great.
  3. I've been using a language app to learn Chinese and it's working out pretty well for me. I think that it has really been beneficial for me because I can learn on the go, so to speak. A few minutes here, a few minutes there... it really adds up. If I tried to just wait for my one weekly lesson only then I wouldn't make so much progress.
  4. Google translate is a bad idea for translating sentences. The results that you will get from it are not going to be a hundred percent reliable. Some of the expressions and the syntax might be lost when translating. I think Google Translate is only good for translating single words.
  5. I'm just curious. From the answers you have recieved from the other forum members, what language do you think is the easiest to learn? Have you made a decision yet or are you still undecided?
  6. I spend at least an hour a week learning my language. I know it's not much but I'm very busy and if I can get in ten minutes here and ten minutes there during the day, then that's a bonus for me. But I never miss my weekly lessons and I really feel good about my progress. If I can increase it to two hours, I think that would really help me to make faster progress.
  7. I've never thought to do that. This seems like a really fun and exciting way to help yourself to learn a new language. Any tip and trick that you can use will greatly benefit you and the rate at which you become fluent in your chosen language. I will certainly try this out for myself. I have taken up baking lately and this should be a fun little exercise for me to translate the recipe and then make it.
  8. The negative aspects of trying to learn from children's books outweigh whatever positive benefits one may derive from them. I think that Linda Gringa makes a really good point and thank you for the useful learning resources you provided.
  9. My parents named me in a foreign language and I have to tell you, it's quite odd to have a name in one language and a surname in another language. It just doesn't 'sound' right. I have now changed my first name to the English version just so that I don't always have to spend the first ten minutes after meeting someone trying to explain the proper way of pronouncing my name.
  10. A lot of people agree that English and Spanish are the easiest languages to learn by far, but I think that how easy or how hard a language will be to learn depends mostly on how you are learning it, from a native speaker or a non-native speaker. Also I think that it's easier to learn a language when you are surrounded by people who speak that language on a daily basis.
  11. Thanks for the tips. When you're starting out learning a new language, it really is hard. Things sort of get easier as you move along and get familiar with the language and every tip and trick helps.
  12. Lovely game. Are you doing this as a hobby or is it your main work? I'm wondering because I've been looking for someone to help me develop an app and I didn't know how to go about it. It's great that you have your very own game out there. Congratulations. Keep them coming.
  13. Kids who are being taught Latin in the schools are really lucky. I wish we had some sort of program in our schools like that. It would have been really beneficial to people like us who love to learn new languages. Now I have a desire to learn Latin, but I know that it won't be as easy starting now as it would have been had I been taught the basics at school.
  14. I think that this is one inspired idea. I also am not fluent enough in a second language to contribute but I will soon and your list will serve as a great learning resource for a lot of people. I will try to get some from my other Chinese speaking friends. They should probably have a few to add to your list.
  15. Chinese for me. It just looks so complicated but so beautiful and elegant. I can't wait until I'm able to start writing Chinese characters with such flourish too...
