Cover letters are required for many different types of job applications, but job postings rarely include any guidance on what is expected to be included in these letters.
This can leave you wondering exactly what you should write, especially when it seems like you’ve put all the relevant information in your resume already.
We’ll help you figure out how to write a cover letter for a job as a scrum master below.
The purpose of a cover letter for a scrum master job
All job cover letters essentially serve a similar purpose, whether you are writing a cover letter for an event manager job or a cover letter for a housekeeping job with no experience.
At the most basic level, a cover letter demonstrates that you can follow directions and understand common business conventions.
In a cover letter, you should introduce yourself, say what job you are applying for and how you found out about it, and mention two or three of the most compelling reasons that the company should hire you.
At best, a cover letter can really make you stand out from the competition.
At worst, a cover letter will get you disqualified from the job before anyone even looks at your qualifications.
This worst case scenario is unlikely to happen as long as you stick with professional conventions. However, keep in mind that this is not the place to try to be clever or funny because those approaches can backfire in this context and with people who do not know you well.
Email or standard letter format in a cover letter for a scrum master job
Your cover letter will either be an email or it will be in a standard letter format.
It could be the latter even if you are not mailing the letter. In some cases, you might be asked to include the cover letter as an attachment, or you may need to upload it along with other documents to a website.
Whether you are sending the cover letter by email or as a letter or letter document affects how you set up the heading.
For an email, you wouldn’t use a heading at all.
For a letter, you should put your address against the left-hand margin or use your own letterhead. This should be followed by the company address, also against the left margin, and then the date.
If your standard email signature includes your address or other contact information, it’s fine to use that at the end of the email, but you aren’t required to.
The introduction of your cover letter for a scrum master job
You should address the person you are writing to professionally. Ideally, you should know their name.
However, if you don’t know the person’s name, it’s okay to begin your letter with something like “Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom It May Concern.”
Your introductory paragraph should say what position you are applying for and where you saw the job listed.
The body of your cover letter for a scrum master job
In the body of your cover letter, you should emphasize one or two past accomplishments at a previous job or other relevant experience that you have. You should also highlight qualities that are important to the job.
This means that before you write this part of your letter, you should think about what accomplishments you have and qualities you possess that are most important to be a successful scrum master.
For example, a scrum master needs to run teams effectively and be well-organized. so having strong communication and organization skills are a positive.
You should also take a look at the job ad and notice whether any requirements or qualifications are specifically mentioned, and try to work these into your cover letter if you can.
For example, if the job ad says you need a minimum of five years of experience, you should mention that in your letter so the recipient immediately knows that you meet this baseline requirement
You do need to try to convey all of this briefly in the letter. Try to keep it down to no more than one or two paragraphs of just a few sentences each.
Remember that in a shorter letter, the main points you want the reader to remember will stand out more.
A cover letter needs to be something that can be read quickly or even skimmed.
Ending your cover letter for a scrum master job
Just about every type of cover letter ends in thanking the recipient for their time and with a reference to a follow up.
In this case, you are hoping to move to the next stage and get an interview. You can review alternatives for ways to say “I am looking forward to the interview.”
You should use a professional closing, such as “Sincerely,” followed by your full name. If you know how to end an email professionally, these guidelines apply to regular letters as well.
