  1. The worst is when people type like "ThIs LyK WhAt ArE YoU eVeN dOiNg". It's so counterproductive and it doesn't even look cool, it makes you look like an idiot. Or when people add extra letters when they're texting, like saying "lolll woww how couldd you even doo thattttt". It's just weird and wastes time.
  2. Oh man, the your/you're thing really gets on my nerves when people don't use the correct form. It doesn't even look right, I don't know how they could actually think that's the right way to say it. You're = You are, you can tell by the letters! Oh well, I usually don't correct people on it because then I'll come off as a jerk, but I can't help laughing when someone spells it wrong, especially if it's in an essay.
  3. What are some mistakes that either people learning the language, or even native speakers often make?
  4. Probably French. I'm still learning Spanish, so that will take a while longer, but I'd like to be able to speak French since I have family in French-speaking parts of Canada.
  5. I feel like if I knew more languages than two that I would get confused all the time. I'd be like, "Is this word English? Spanish? French? Maybe it's Portugese...Some day I hope to learn a lot more languages than two though, that would be fantastic.
  6. Yeah, depending on who's speaking. Some people can make anything sound pleasant, and some people sound grumpy all the time. Most native German speakers I've heard do make the language sound aggressive, and some of the words sound to me like someone yelling at another person no matter what it means.

    Hello!

Never made a thread here yet, even though I've been posting for a week or so. Hey guys, native English speaker here learning Spanish and possibly French in the future. Nice to meet you all
  8. I'm a native speaker. I can help out anyone who needs to know anything about English, so fire away if you have questions I like to learn as well as teach so the English board is good for me to hang out in.
  9. It's important. I'm not the type of person to correct a person's grammar but if you're doing it completely wrong, maybe it's good to let them know the correct way. Correcting a person who is learning a language is perfectly fine. They'll likely be glad you did so.
  10. Middle school is usually when they start teaching it to kids in the US. I think it's a good time, because it's when they're starting to mature and are able to understand the grammar rules. Any time between toddler and middle school is going to be hard for them.
  11. Wow, I've never heard some of these. Interesting! Thanks for sharing them
  12. Cool resource. Not my learning style for sure, but I might use it occasionally. Thanks for posting it, though.
  13. Correcting them can get annoying. Don't do it every text, they'll be like "oh my god (or omg ) I'm not gonna text you anymore if you don't stop correcting me" I know that girls especially HATE being wrong, so..
  14. With other students. Spanish is required in middle and high school so we took it in a class with around 20 other students. I liked it because I was able to ask them for help if I needed it, plus we had experience with conversations this way.
  15. Stoned Baked Ripped Tripping Flying All I can think of off the top of my head.
  16. This is so weird! I was thinking the same thing today and I hadn't even seen this thread yet. Anyway, I don't understand how people think this word makes sense. It's a double negative! Oh well, let them make themselves look stupid if they want to
  17. Now that I have autocorrect on my phone it just seems pointless to make myself look dumber by using shortcuts. I never used them, even when I didn't have autocorrect. I can understand how they can be useful but why not just include the extra two letters and make your message look better and more understandable?
  18. My favorite word (actually two, I guess) were "Uh oh!" when I dropped a pair of toy car keys on the ground. Best part is my mom got it on video! She just happened to be recording me playing at the time and it happened
  19. Wow, I completely forgot about this website. I must have donated at least 10,000 grains of rice from all the time I spent on there, but somehow I just forgot to go on it. Good to see it's still going strong, I'll have to start doing that again sometime.
  20. I'm a native English speaker as well, so if you need help with anything, or want to know if you're saying something correctly, let me know. I guess I'll start a conversation. Do any of you like sports? What are your favorite sports to play? I like to play baseball and soccer (aka football).
  21. In 8th and 9th grade in my area, it's required that we take either French or Spanish for at least 3 years, and then you can choose if you want to continue with that language further into your High School years.
  22. Listening and speaking. With Spanish, I find it really hard to decipher the accents when I'm listening to a native speaker, and equally as hard to speak in that accent. I also can't roll my r's very well either, which makes some words difficult to say correctly.
  23. With Google Translate, I can usually figure out what someone is trying to say from the translation, even if there are a couple confusing parts. Also when I'm the one that needs to translate to another language that I can sort of speak, I know what to do from what it gives me (usually). For example, if I needed to know how to say "he ran" in Spanish (I already know this, just an example), Google Translate might say "el correr", but I know that I have to change the verb to match the subject.
  24. "Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts." Love this quote. I can definitely relate it to events in my own life.
  25. I hear Spanish in public almost every day, a huge amount of people speak it. I hope to travel a lot in the future, and Spanish is spoken in many different places.
