  1. That is so true! We have been losing out on many of our traditional native habits and languages to English. In Tamil we used to say "Vannakam" which is the Hindi equivalent of "Namaste". Now that has been converted to "Hello man! wassup? how are you dude?" While we need to get global and converse well in English, we also need to stick to our ethnic roots!
  2. I believe even native English speakers would definitely use this forum. There is so much to explore and learn about the language that nobody can claim that they know the language completely!
  3. English was always a primary part of our education in school. It is the same in the major towns and cities across India. All subjects like Maths,Science,History etc are all taught in English. Besides, we also studied English as a separate language!

  6. I generally do not prefer the local dictionaries used in India for lack of consistency and quality. I always prefer the traditional Oxford dictionary for all my reference purposes!
  7. My native language is Tamil. The language is one of the most oldest and traditional languages to have come out of India. Incidentally, it is also an extremely difficult language to learn and master. Even for a native speaker like me, am no where close to mastering the language If anybody is interested in learning Tamil, do revert back in this thread. I might help you out to the best of my abilities!
  8. Why should cases give you a problem! Does different cases result in different meanings for the same word? If that is the case then it might be a real toughie!
  9. I would believe learning though music would be a daunting task, the reason being music besides being an expression of language is also an expression of specific cultures. Hence, I have never believed in learning languages through musical forms!
  10. One of my friends actually managed to speak Hindi quite fluently after watching Hindi programs for a while! I believe it does help watching some programs in a particular language while learning the same. It facilitates the process of learning however watching TV programs alone does not help. It should only be used as a tool or aid.
  11. Learning a language from a movie basically happens if the movie has lots of lengthy and proper dialogues. In that context, I have learnt a lot of English from the old Hitchcock movies and off late from Will Smith movies
  12. Of course it is the British accent! English in India originated primarily during the stay of the British. I have been used to that accent since school days. Of course having watched lot of American movies and NBA, I do love the American accent too
  13. That is so very true! Here in India, we have always felt English to be a superior language when compared to our local languages. This is a notion that we need to get out of people mind. Yes English is important but our native language is equally important too!
  14. Here in India it is always a classroom environment and my study time wasn't different either! I have always languages amongst a group of 40 to 60 students and must say it is always an enriching experience to do so
  15. It actually depends on what language we are trying to learn. Certain languages are difficult to speak because of too many tongue twisters and certain others are difficult to write or listen to. However, in general I would say that writing is the most difficult of all !
  16. Interestingly my own mother tongue language Tamil is one of the toughest languages to master. I found it extremely difficult to go beyond the basics of the language. The grammar is extremely difficult and there are loads of tongue twisters!
