  1. I believe "a lot" is the correct usage of this word or phrase. I also do remember seeing alot in few articles but I think they are wrong!
  2. In India are all our subjects are taught in English and we start off at a really young age, as young as 4 or 5 years old. By the time we are 10 or 12 years old, we become quiet fluent in English!
  3. Well that would be the most ideal scenario but also quite an expensive proposition! I would rather rely on the online references to learn a new language!

  5. Google translate is kind of fine. Of course it cannot replace the translation work of a real human! In absence of a human, I suppose apps like Google translate come in really handy!
  6. I use the words "Actually" and "Basically" a lot. I used these words frequently during my presentations in school, colleges,work etc and also when I write articles.
  7. In India such people are mostly called as "Dogs" or "Donkeys" But I sometimes wonder why should we be referring those bad humans to those poor animals. I did rather scold them as "humans" because there isn't anything worse than that!
  8. Am very much guilty too! Not only "LOL" but also other words like "OMG,NVM" etc. Am trying hard to get rid of them from my system but it is not happening at least for now!

  10. I have not yet got the chance to work abroad but am happy to work in my country! I have gone for some short business trips to a few countries in Asia though!
  11. True! There is too much of short cuts used nowadays! There are certain times when I do not understand those shortcuts and it takes lot of time to decipher them. The way these shortcuts are used, I believe there has to be a separate dictionary for shortcuts soon!
  12. Yes! On lot of occasions in my own country because I cannot speak or understand Hindi. It did have an impact in my work too! So I have made it a point to start learning Hindi.
  13. I would want them to master my regional language first followed by English since it is the accepted business language in India. Besides, I would want him/her to learn Hindi since most people in India speak Hindi. Also I would want them to learn at least one foreign language of their choice!
  14. How different is Russian from English? Would it be an extremely difficult language for a non-native speaker to learn?

  16. There are some words like this in English. However, it surprises me to find that such mistakes are made by TV anchors too! I believe the basic duty of a media channel is to proof read or review their work before the final presentation!
  17. This word "Lol" is typically used a lot by us Indians! It is so prevalent here nowadays. The problem with using such fancy words is that at one point of time we forget that they are informal words and start using them like formal words!
  18. Although I do not know the languages, am aware that both Hindi and Urdu are quite similar. Urdu is primarily used by Muslims in their spiritual books and we can those sayings in Urdu as wall hangings in their homes.
  19. I actually try to start my learning with curse words first because they kind of stick to our heads easily Jokes apart, I learn the curse words to identify if someone is regularly using them on me!
  20. In India, learning second language is a part of our curriculum. Whether we like it or not, we have to study a second language The second language that we study is usually Hindi or our local regional language
  21. I incidentally had the same doubts in my mind. I also learnt French in high school and since then lost touch. I have been able to keep pace with certain other languages but not French! Some great tips in this thread. Would look to put them to practice!
  22. I try to read and write as much as possible in those languages. Conversing with someone in that language might be a challenging task because we need people around us who know that language. However, reading and writing does not have such a requirement and hence I would keep doing them
