I don't think they sound rude, and even if foreigners sound rude, people should understand that they're not native speakers, and that they just probably don't know it sounds rude. I don't understand why direct questions are considered rude though.

Interesting video. I think bad words are bad words for the same reason bad actions are bad actions. It's mostly just a social thing, and if society decides that a certain word or action is bad, they decide to make a rule and prohibit the use of the word.

At first I thought I was a bit funny, but many people just don't know to limits themselves and end up overusing the word. That's why now I dislike the word, since most of the time the people who use it are just dbags trying to be funny.

when I was learning English, i had some difficulties trying to understand some idioms because they mean something completely different. I don't think English in general is sarcastic though. I think it all boils down to the tone of the voice.

I'm not a native speaker, but I almost never hear people saying "skedaddle". Would love the be proven wrong though, because I really like that word.

Spanish actually has two: - Madre and Padre - Mamá and Papá

How do you say Happy Thanksgiving in Spanish and other languages?
jbepp replied to True2marie's topic in Language Learning
English is actually my second language. I live in Latin America and we say "Feliz día de Acción de gracias". -
Interesting. I usually use both without realizing, but now I know a little bit more about English. Thanks!
-
Depends on the context. "Permiso" usually means "Sorry to bother you". "Disculpa" could mean that you're apologizing or it could mean the same as "Permiso".

I speak two languages: Spanish and English. I can read, write and speak both fluently, but I like writing in Spanish more. I'm also learning German so I know a bit of German but definitely not enough to maintain a conversation.
-
Not really. I love Spanish, it sounds excellent and the things you can do with it are amazing. It's also useful for many things. I'm glad I'm bilingual though, English is an awesome language too.

How often do you dream in another language?
jbepp replied to True2marie's topic in Language Learning
I don't dream very often, and most of my dreams don't even have people speaking so it's hard to say. Spanish is my first language but the last dream I had in English was like 2 months ago. -
Yeah, my friends and I do the same thing. But I'm not a native English speaker so I don't really know how to translate it.

"Tu" is generally said to someone you're close to. You family, your boy/girlfriend etc. "Usted" is used when you're not too close to the person you're speaking to. For non-native speakers is ok to use them interchangeable though, since most people won't mind.

Embarrassed when people laugh at your accent?
jbepp replied to SpringBreeze's topic in Language Learning
Nobody has told me that, so no. I don't think I have a strong accent though, so I doubt they would say anything. -
The same thing happened to my aunt. She's been living in Austria for almost 15 years now, and since she only calls every month or so, her Spanish gets kinda rusty. Just talk your native language for a bit and I'm sure you'll be fine in just a few days.

I've actually helped people from Japan doing this. Some of them want to practice either Spanish or English, and since I have plenty of free time, I just help them for a bit.

Do you think German sounds "aggressive" ???
jbepp replied to linguaholic's topic in German Language | Discussion
It does sounds a bit aggressive, but most people overreact about it. I also find it quite sexy. -
Raison d'être is my favorite. It just sounds so awesome.

Do you think you have a limit to how many languages you can learn?
jbepp replied to mareebaybay's topic in Language Learning
I think people don't learn more languages is because they have no time for it, or because they simply don't want (or need) to learn. I think most people should have the brain capacity to learn a few languages. -

Pretty awesome. Liked and shared with a few friends who were interested in learning new languages. -
Extinct Languages #1 // Ubykh // extinct since 7th October, 1992
jbepp replied to linguaholic's topic in Language Learning
Definitely an interesting language. I had absolutely no idea it existed, but now that I've read your post I'm actually a bit sad to know that it's a dead language. -
Some lyrics are exceptional, and might pass as poems; but I'll always prefer real poetry. Poems truly make a language shine.

Just finished doing the test. Got 30 right (94%). It was pretty easy though, but I'm going to take the TOEFL exam next year so it's definitely useful for me.
