  1. Sign language is not very difficult to learn, for alphabets. But the words themselves are a bit more difficult to learn and you should ask instructors of LD's or Learning with Difficulties/ Special Children to teach you. We had a few schoolmates who were mute and deaf and they were teaching us how to do sign language before, I should have paid more attention to them when I had the chance.

  2. That's what language is all about, words that aren't used correctly when used by a lot of people constantly will make that word part of language. There are a lot of words out there some are abbreviations and slang such as gonna, won'cha and other words that are frequently heard in the music industry, but some people are already considering it okay as compared to others.

  3. Words that express agreements such as : yes, you may, okay, yup, and the like. Whenever I hear words that agree with me whether I'm asking something like a favor or asking for permission to go to the bathroom when at school, I find delight hearing these words. There are some people though who are very rude and comment something like, I can't do anything when you go to the bathroom and stuff like that, they should just say yes, or go.

  4. Since we studied the English language starting on our elementary days, for me, I guess the hardest part in learning English are the subject verb agreements, tenses, and punctuations. I find vocabulary a tad bit easier when you understand the basics of the English language. The usage of words also goes hand in hand with vocabulary and you can always visit the dictionary for help which is very convenient nowadays specially since we have it online.

  5. Exams are given to check the ability of students to read and understand statements for a period of time. Reading comprehension generally means the ability of an individual to read and understand the statements provided for. There are some people who have the ability to zoom through the text and give an answer to the choices provided for quickly and there are some who take time reading and understanding the situation given to the. How about you how do you think you compare to the general populace?

  6. It really depends on the language and if it has dialects or similar languages which can be learned simultaneously. If the language you are learning has synonymous languages which can be picked up easily then go ahead and learn them at the same time. The problem is when there are 2 different and no-similar languages which can actually confuse you because of different writing styles, grammar, and words used so I guess you better stick with one language for that matter.

  7. Yes. We had a lot of foreign exchange students and foreigners who study here in the Philippines, I helped a lot of Koreans and other Foreigners who don't understand our Native language so I had to translate it to English. I had one Chinese Friend where she was having difficulty also in English so I tried to explain to her what it means by ways of gestures and writing. I'm very blessed to have a very good grasp with the English language and it really is for a purpose.

  8. In our country some people are have a colonial mentality mindset wherein they think that other's culture, products, language is better than theirs. It's a xenocentric view of culture where they pick foreign culture rather than their own native one. Although for me I still find Filipino equal with the English language because it is our national language. I love my fellow Filipinos but I don't like how they treat each other which is again in tuned with the Crab Mentality mindset wherein they try to pull their fellow Filipino's down. These are the mindset which are awful and we've picked them up from other cultures.

  9. TV Shows and Movies actually inspire me a lot to learn new languages. When I saw the Horror movie, The Eye which was acted out by Jessica Alba and the Disney movie Ratatouie, the French language sounded very good to me and inspired me to want to learn French, right now though I only know few words which include Hello's and Goodbye's and maybe if I have free time after graduation I would take time to learn French since it is a very interesting and sounding language.

  10. Yes. Actually the 3 are native languages and one of them is my national language which is Filipino. So I know 4 languages Primarily; English, Tagalog, Ilocano and Ifontok. Since Philippines is an archipelago composed of 7107 Islands, we have a lot of languages brought to us by our Conquerors including the Spaniards, Americans, Japanese and those who did trade with us including the Chinese, Malay, Indo and other people and even our Native settlers the Aetas. So there you have a culturally rich and diverse nation which is the Philippines.

  11. I live in Baguio. Actually our place is a special case, almost all languages in our area are important because Baguio is a culturally diversified place where everyone including foreigners and people all over the Philippines come to. English is the primary language that most people in our place speak. Next of course is either Filipino or Ilocano. These three languages are the most important ones that one must understand and speak in order to survive and thrive in Baguio City. It is also called the summer capital of the Philippines where tourists flock in to see the Flower Festival and the Cold climate.

  12. D is the active sentence. It seems to structurally resemble the others, but it's actually different when you break it down

Q: What is an active sentence?

A: In an active sentence, the subject is doing (ie: is ACTIVE) the action.  The subject, therefore, is front and center in the sentence:

"I eat cookies as a snack. Yum!"

"The dog chased the cat across the park."

Q: So, what is a passive sentence

A:  In passive sentences, the action is happening to someone; the focus is not who did the action, but to whom the action is happening.

The same sentences as passive ones:

"The cookies are eaten by me as a snack. Yum!"

The cookies are the focus. The are experiencing the action of being eaten.

"The cat was chased across the park by the dog"

The cat is the victim of the dogs pursuit.  It gives the impression that the cat just allowed himself to be chased.

You'll most often find passive sentences in the past tense, but don't be tricked into assuming that past tense = passive.  That is not always the case.

Passive is more wordy and more difficult to understand (because of the extra wordage).  Overall, active is the preferred format; however, at times you'll want to use passive.

For example the subject may not be where you want to focus attention. On the receiver of the action, rather than the do-er:

"The masked bandit robbed the bank"

    vs

"The banked was robbed by the masked bandit"

    "Cheryl wrote the report"

    vs

"The report was written by Cheryl"

So all this helps us understand the sentences you gave as an example:

    a) I was denied admission into the school.

= passive...the school is the subject and they did the action of denying you.  Meanies ;)

    B) I was wheeled into the operating theater.

The nurses, doctors or someone else did the action of the sentence: wheeling you into the operating theater.  Therefore  the action is happening to you.  = passive.

    c) I was informed of the dangers involved.

Someone else did the action of informing you about the risks.  You just received the information. Thus, this is again passive.

    d) I was tired by the end of the day.

This is the tricky one.  The use of past tense gives the impression of passive voice, but you are doing the action of being tired.  The day is not tiring you, nor is it tired because of you. Therefore, this is the active sentence.

    Two more examples:

"SarahRTW wrote this very long post"

"This very long post was written by SarahRTW"

    :D

    Hope this helps!

    I agree with this.
