  1. hi BWL Wow, you speak so many languages! It's so nice to have you here in the forums! I hope you can even learn more languages here on linguaholic.com or at least improve your skills in some of the languages that you mentioned. I would love to hear about some characteristics of Fujianhua. If you could spread some knowledge about it in the Chinese Forum that would be absolutely amazing.

I suggest that if you have questions about German, just post it in the German subforum and I will try to answer it straight away  Are you actually enjoying studying German or is it just a means to an end ? hmm is that actually correct to use the idiomatic expression " a means to an end " in this kind of context? regards linguaholic

Hopefully, other members here can help you with different languages :=) I would like to start studying Spanish. It's a lovely language and indeed very useful! see ya around
  8. Back in the days (2006), I did my first travel to China. I was all alone and I did not speak a single word. I traveled around and met so many people but I did not have any means to communicate with them. This was the point of no return for me...I had to study Chinese...and I never regret it. It's a very fascinating language with a beautiful and unique writing system. Moreover, I always liked to study languages. Learning a new language is almost like extending your mind..you can practically dwelf into a new world (of thinking). What's more, studying CHinese is a real challenge and I do like challenges a lot :karate:
  9. Dear Ersatz, dear lookforuu I really care about your feedback and I would like to inform you that I changed this setting. It is now not necessary anymore to pass verification while doing a post. However, I would like to mention that this setting was just for the 5 first posts and after that the verification question (capture) would not appear anymore. Anyway, I disabled this feature on your request, as I do understand that this feature can discourage new members from writing in the forum..still, forum spam is a huge matter and I have to admit that I am pretty scared of it :=) :frozen: Regarding the submission of requests / suggestions, I will definitely create a new subforum for that. regards Marcel
  10. My personal favorite is Snollygoster It stands for a person that can not be trusted.
  11. Cool thread Brad. As you have problably already noticed, I installed a new mod for the implementation of Youtube videos. Now you just need to copy the youtube link and paste it in the writing box while typing a post and that's it. The cool thing is, we can now directly watch the movies from within linguaholic.com I will provide some more useful links to youtube videos later on.
  12. Hi Michael There are indeed some rules and as far as I know the conjunctions can be split up in three different categories (concerning the word order). First of all, there are conjunctions that can be used as antecedent (first part of the sentence) or consequent (second part of the sentence) Those conjunctions that can stand in the first part of the sentence but also after the commata, are what we would call here the first category of one-place conjunctions. Examples for the type 1 are 如果,虽然 and 要是。 sample sentence: 因为今天我不工作,我们想去看电视。OR 我们想去看电视,因为今天我不工作。 Then there is the second category of conjunctions (type 2) and they can only be placed in the beginning of the sentence (antecedent). In this category you have the conjunction 由于 (if you know more, please let me know!) sample sentence: 由于我今天不工作,我在家看电视。 Then there is also a third category of conjunctions, including the chinese conjunctions 可是,但是,此外,以及 and 为的是。 Those chinese conjunctions can only be placed in the consequent part of the sentence (after the commata in the second part of the sentence) sample sentences: 她会说法语,但是她太懒了。 Please note that I have just been talking here about "one-place"-conjunctions. :ninja: Generally speaking, the conjunctions mentioned above, when used in the first part of the sentence, then they are usually in the first position of the sentence. If the subject of the sentence is changing (first part of sentence has a different subject than the second part after the commata), then the conjunction can also be in the second position.
  13. hey deen sure, I can help you out here. This instrument is called er 二胡。why 二胡? That's pretty simple. The instrument has two strings, therefore it is called 二 for "two" and 胡 means string here.
  14. First of all I would like to mention that I just started to study Spanish. However, I really like it and will definitely continue to study it..and hopefully one day reach fluency :=) As my skills in Spanish are very limited, there are still many things that I do not know (not only in terms of speaking, writing and so on, but also about taking exams etc). This is why I would like to ask what international exams can be taken in Spanish (spanish as a foreign language). In English for example you have the Cambridge exams, the IELTS and the TOEFL exams (there are more but those three are international and widely known). What are the equivalent exams for foreign learners of Spanish and what makes them different from each other? If someone could tell me more about that, I would be very grateful
  15. Welcome to the forum Kaynil! I am very happy to see you online on www.linguaholic.com! Yes, the verification is just necessary for the first 5 posts and then you will never have to do that again while posting :=) Thank you for helping out our members in questions regarding Spanish ! If you have any question/suggestions/inputs about anything in this forum, please let me know
  16. i did some research about the difference of cambridge, IELTS and TOEFL and I found an interesting pdf document. I will attach it here. Please have a look at it.
  17. In most cases, TOEFL or IELTS are fine, as both exams are accepted and meet the entry requirements for academic settings. If you are more about British English, you might want to take the IELTS exam as it is more focused on British English vocabulary than TOEFL. Also, the TOEFL test usually takes about 4 hours, which is rater long. The IELTS test is short..is usually about 3 hours. Let's clear the meaning of the abbreviations as well : TOEFL stands for Test of English as a foreign language and IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System.
  18. In simple words, the pimsleur method is an audiobased learning system for language acquisition developed by a person called Paul Pimsleur.
  19. hey there what is "very well" for you? Could you be a little bit more precise about that please ? thank you
  20. hey robert it's cool to have you here on the forum. I got to say that you have the coolest signature I came across so far in the forums :=) I hope you are enjoying yourself in the forums and if there's anything you need, let me know.
  21. Hey Torch Welcome to the forum! It seems like you got a lot of interesting study plans Feel free to ask me if you got a question regarding the German or French language. I speak some Japanese too and if you are interested in Chinese, I might be of some help as well :=) Well, basically, if you should have any kind of question or if you would like to request a feature on linguaholic.com or so, feel free to contact me. :ninja:
  22. well, let's now talk about the other use of 把。 A good way to start this is maybe to first make clear what the normal sentence structure is in Chinese: It is: Subject (S) + Verb (V) + Object (O) ----> S-V-O structure. So, examples for that normal structure would be sentences like: 我喝茶。 // I drink tea. 我的朋友是瑞士人。 // My friend is from Switzerland. 她喜欢喝啤酒。 // I like to drink beer (this is of course just an example ) The 把-structure, however, follows a different pattern, which is: Subject (S) + 把 + Object (O) + Verb (V) Sounds pretty easy, right? Let's make some examples for 把-sentences: 她把啤酒喝完了。She drank my beer (empty). 他把我的杯子打破了 He broke my cup 我把我的电脑放在桌子上了 I put my computer on the table. (Wǒ bǎ wǒ de dian4 nao3 fang4 zài zhuōzi shàng le.) So what is the 把 sentence doing? It expresses what has happened to the object. In the first sentence, the object is the beer. In the second sentence, the object is the cup and in the third example, the object is the computer. The verb in the end does describe what has happened to the object. -->somebody drank the beer, someone broke the cup, someone put the computer on the table... Now, when should you use 把 and when not? This is not an easy question. Often, the use of 把 is not mandatory and you have the choice if you want to make a proper S+V+O sentence or maybe a 把-sentence. Some verbs however, they demand for a 把-sentence like the verb 放。On the other hand, sometimes it is impossible to use a 把 sentence. Remember that you only use a 把 structure when something directly happens to the object. If nothing happens to the object, you can also not use the 把-structure. For instance, this is the case for verbs of let's say emotion like "to love" and "to like".
