  1. Yes. In fact it just happened earlier with my husband. It's worse when you just wake up and this person is trying to talk to you about something important and here you are, mind still halfway awake and having to listen to him explain about where he's gonna put the 'sectional couch'. I've never heard of the word lol so when I tried to reply back about how we should put 'that part' this way,he was like 'what part'. I tried to find the word but couldn't so I just showed him the picture and he went 'ohh the end part of the couch'.
  2. Probably Arabic for me since I grew up in a country where a lot of the people actually write and speak Arabic. It just sounds 'harsh' and the writing is way too difficult for me.
  3. I know four languages and speak four languages back at home daily. At work I'd have to speak English and at home, have to speak two of my Chinese dialect. I found learning language easier once you know more than one language because you start to pick up what to learn first. You know your weakness as well as your strength ,you know what motivate you and you also know the trick. When I first time learnt English, I've learnt Chinese dialect and a little mandarin here and there. So I know that I am terrible with memorizing vocabulary. I'd start writing a diary and when I came across words that I wanted to use but didn't know, I'd open my dictionary ,used the word and highlight it. I'd then use the word often in so I'd remember it.
  4. I'd say Indonesian is so easy to learn,I know one foreigner who lives in Indo for 3 years and was very fluent with the language. He even picks up the accent, the slangs and every thing perfectly. The reason why I think Indonesian is easy is because we don't really have grammars so it's not as complicated as many languages. Another thing too,a lot of our words are similar to English. Taksi = Taxi. Bis =Bus. Motor =motorcycle. Lift = Lift. Elevator = Elevator ,etc.
  5. I speak four languages fluently. Two Chinese dialect, Indonesian and English. I also understand Mandarin a bit but not the writing since my parents never taught us though they both speak and write the language fluently. I am learning German right now through duolinguo.com and would like to learn some French and perhaps Spanish. I know some Japanese and Korean words just from watching the tv shows and the songs here and there.
  6. In where I come from, 'dog' would be it because we have a lot of wild dogs around the street digging for food. In fact when people want to say how they have such bad luck with their life, they use 'dog' as the term. 'I have dog's luck' .It kinda makes sense now since in U.S dog is treated so well and it's like our own family while if you are a dog and born in my part of country, you're just well..a dog ;o so
  7. I agree that being multilingual has exposed me to more cultures and their tradition even the songs. Another thing that I like being multilingual is the fact when I want to learn a whole new language,I won't struggle as much with having different accent completely since I've been there done that. It has helped me to connect with people outside my country as well as the food. Once people found out I learnt their language or speak the language, they started to introduce me more about what attraction in their area, food and even some of the stuffs that are going on in their area.
  8. I love poetry that rhymes. I used to write poetry together with a friend. I write one sentence,he wrote another so it's a poem created by two people. It was interesting,I never saved the work. My all time poem is Love - Loy Bowman - Love is like a lump of gold, Hard to get, and hard to hold. Of all the girls I've ever met, You're the one I can't forget. I do believe that God above, Created you for me to love. He chose you from all the rest, Because he knew I would love you best.
  9. I started learning English when I was in grade 5 but quit shortly after because I was discouraged by all the older students in the class who have learnt so far ahead of me. I picked it up again when I was in 7th grade until I finished high school. While I was learning,I was tutoring as well so it helped me learn the language even faster because I had to practice it a lot longer than I needed to. I had to learn the language because I was failing at school. Got a big fat F and my parents weren't happy about it. For my second Chinese dialect,I don't even remember. I just started being taught by my cousin because she couldn't speak my Chinese dialect.By the time I hit 12,I could speak it fluently.
  10. My husband says I say 'you know..' a lot mainly because when I try to to explain something and he doesn't get it or he just wants to mess around with me,I'd go 'you knowwwww...'and then do some hands signal to explain the object which from what I was told 90 percent of the time I just draw a square from both hands no matter what the object is  . In fact they just told me that last week. they were like 'ALL YOU DO IS DRAW SOME SQUARE. YOU'D TRY TO ASK ABOUT WHERE YOUR WORK OUT STAYBALL IS AND IT'S ROUND BUT YOU DRAW A SQUARE'
  11. I am so guilty for this mainly because most of my online friends don't really speak 'proper' English and since a lot of them are gamers, LOL followed by LMAO or even ROFL are very commonly used. I'd say on messengers,I use the emoticons more than typing LOL but in game chat,I'd just LOL. It's just weird to type 'laugh out loud' or 'I am laughing right now'. Sometimes I'd type 'that made me laugh'
  12. I was a teacher since I was in fifth grade where I taught little kids how to write alphabets to how to be able to construct sentences. When I was in Senior High,I started tutoring English language and god paid for it. I didn't start teaching in courses and school until I was in college. I'd tell all mothers or future parents who plan to teach your kids several language that it's actually EASIER for kids to learn more than one language instead of just one language so you guys are on a good track! That's how I learnt one of my Chinese dialect. My uncle married a woman who spoke different Chinese dialect and they lived in an area where 90 percent of the population were speaking that language so, every time my cousin came to visit me, she'd try to talk to me with her language. She'd point to me what it meant and I picked up the language from my parents as well. I speak that dialect fluently by the time I was in 6th grade. I was juggling between 3 languages every day since I was little and I never had a problem with it. I don't plan to have children but I taught my niece English whenever I get a chance to see her.
  13. I'd like to introduce this Chinese novel which was written in the 14th century and attributed to Luo Guanzhong. This is the 'must read' novel in China from what I was told by my student. Every single Chinese that you talk to would know about this novel because it's part of the Chinese widely historical events, people behind it and the relative Han and Jin dynasties. It's one of the few greatest classical novels of Chinese literature and has total of over 800,000 words . When I first started reading the novel,I wasn't that into it because the first book was a bit boring for me not to mention the many characters that involve in the history that made it confusing to follow. What made me end up keep reading and so into it would be the battle strategies and knowing this all actually happened in the past instead of a fiction story made it a lot more interesting to read. It has been made into so many different kinds of movies in China and even a very famous video game. This novel gave me something to talk about with my student from China when I first started teaching. It's not an easy read due to hundreds of characters in the story to follow for me but it's worth the time. The famous opening line of the novel : 話說天下大勢,分久必合,合久必分
  14. It's getting super popular in Indo with the KPOP and the Korean drama.I always feel that it's easier to learn through watching movies at same time taking online classes. I watched some of the Korean drama and just picked up a bit here and there. It helps with the pronunciation and the accent as well. I usually go to gooddrama.net for all my mandarin,Japanese and Korean drama movies.
  15. My first English novel that was translated to my language that I read was 'Absolute Power' by David Baldacci. My first English novel written in English was 'Bloodline' by Sydney Sheldon. We had to pick something from our drama class and then had to write about the moral story that we could get from the novel and something else.I remember that novel was what got me hooked in reading every English written story in English. It was so good,so easy to understand, the humor and the love story suddenly felt a lot more complex and interesting to read compare to when it got translated to my language.
  16. LOL I showed this to my husband and he pointed out the part "I would suggest ===> Do it or be prepared to justify yourself " and said 'ohey look they speak your language"
  17. English is actually part of our curriculum in where I come from. Back when I was in elementary school, they let you choose which language you wanted to learn as your second language ,I remember my auntie actually picked Japanese. It got removed and for a while the only language that was taught is English. Nowadays, some schools started to add Mandarin in the curriculum as well but this is why a lot of us learnt English in my country. Since it's part of our curriculum,we have to have good grade so when I got a big fat F, my parents put me in an English course to help me improve. Nowadays you can actually go to a school where English is the first language used in the school. All the teachers speak English and all the subjects from math to chemistry or biology are taught in English. A lot of the teachers are also foreigners. The big catch? It's considered a 'high class' school where it's so expensive that only the rich can probably afford it.
  18. I think it takes a while to completely take over the accent from the country you move into. I've been in U.S for 8 years, never speak my mother tongue here with anyone and though my accent has changed a lot since I came here and everyone at home told me my English is very american now, other people still can tell I am Asian right away when I speak. For people who live in this town that talked to me when I came here first, saw the difference. For people who knew me in Asia before I moved, felt the difference. For new friends that I just encountered,I still have the Asian accent. For example,my husband and I play online games, whenever I meet someone new and we do a skype chat ,all I say most of the times are "Are we ready to pull?" And I'd get 'woah.love the accent there. Where are you from?' and I know they are not talking about my accent here because they didn't say anything bout my husband's lol
  19. Agree to disagree for me always sounds a bit funny but I like the fact it rolls nice on the tongue. All alone always makes me feel sad for some reason.
  20. A lot of places just make you log in through your facebook or google to make it convenient for you to log in but I don't think they spam your friends or facebook. That being said, I am not entirely sure since I always just ignore the log in through my social media instead,I just register using my email address. I ONLY got email from that site when someone corrected me and I think you can even set it up that you never receive email from the site at all.
  21. English (Welsch) and Italian are by far my favorites. One thing I learnt after coming to U.S is, it seems that every state has their own accent as well! I have a hard time to understand people from the south such as Texas and I love New Yorker accent. I have a Canadian friend that every time I talk to him and he goes 'eh?' I always thought that's so cute! Playing online game with people around the world have got me to know more and more English accent and every time I talk to them and I don't understand them,I'd try to talk to them more to get familiar with their accent. I am proud to say that I am now familiar with Australian and New Zealand English accent as well. I didn't understand them at all at first. It sounded like they talk from their throat! but now, every time we play together and someone was like 'I don't understand that guy.where is he from'. I'd be the one who tells him what he was saying because I am used to his accent. When I first moved into the smaller town in Wisconsin,a lot of people said my accent was really thick. years later when I went to visit the same person I met when I first came here,She said 'your accent is not as thick as you first got here.now you just have to learn to say UFFDA!' .I guess there's a lot of Norwegians in where we live.
  22. British English for me is the most romantic language. I just really love the accent.
  23. Oh you set your own learning pace. You can even review your previous lessons. You can retake the assignments over and over and over. So it's really a fun learning experience for me. I used to do it everyday but I've been slacking. I need to get right back on it.
  24. I am not sure if any of you guys have tried this website but this is what I am using to learn German. There's not a lot of languages you can learn from that site yet but this is the site I am really enjoying. I think it's done very well because they get you to do the assignments and actually repeat a lot of words you have learnt as well. You also have to translate sentences or paragraph or a whole story with other users to get to the next level if I am not mistaken,I've been slacking with my German but I am at lvl 12 in that site which is still halfway to go. If you are interested in German, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian, you can give this site a shot. You can start with choosing your path whether you want to start as basic or put in placement for advanced 'class'. Have fun learning.
  25. I moved to U.S 8 years ago and unlike many people who started searching for friends to connect to from their home country,I didn't. I live in a very small town where majority of the population are Caucasian and all I speak is English. The video is true. When you surround yourself with people who speak the foreign language ,you have no choice but to learn the language thus, you will learn faster and pick up the words faster. Whenever I go back home,I feel like I lose the 'accent' of my English and just felt like my English sounds a lot like I am speaking my mother tongue. It could be just my imagination but I feel that way. It's the same thing as people who migrate to U.S but restricted their children to speak their own language at home. I have a friend who migrated to U.S with his family when he was 3 years old, at 25 years old, he still has this super thick Chinese accent that people always thought he learned his language in China. His parents speak very little English. My husband works with a lot of Vietnamese who migrated to U.S since they were young but they speak very little English because they simply don't speak the language. Not only they are surrounded by people who speak their language, they go to grocery store where the owners are Vietnamese, and often get together with their peers that also speak Vietnamese so they hardly 'have to' speak English.
