It's true, Brazilian Portuguese seems like a song to us Portuguese, it's just their thing, and also many words are different. If anyone wants to practice some Portuguese, let me know.

What is Hardest- Reading, Writing, or Speaking?
caparica007 replied to tulosai's topic in Language Learning
I agree that speaking is the hardest, it's just much more complex, unless you are in the country or surrounded by speakers of that language, otherwise it is just impossible to pick up just from a book. -

How Many Different Languages Do You Think There Are?
caparica007 replied to cinderr's topic in Language Learning
69000 languages it's an impressive number. I think it should be hard to determine they exact number because as you say a lot of dialects are spoken worldwide. -

I think that the more you listen to a language the better you pick up its sounds and structure. I think this happens a lot here in Portugal with English in television because we have many programs in English, so I suppose the same effect does apply to music as well.

I have studied many languages and my MO was always the same, I started by browsing the net for free contents. After that I bought my stuff on Amazon and did self-study, but self-study can take you only up to a point. So it really depends on how far you want to take your studies.

Why did you choose to learn Japanese?
caparica007 replied to tulosai's topic in Japanese Language | Discussion
I have started learning Japanese because I was working for a publishing house that wanted to publish a book in Japan and its contents were sensible, so I tried to grasp the basics of the language to be able to review the book. I was able to do it with the help of a professional translator here in Portugal. -
Learn Chinese in 5 Minutes :=)
caparica007 replied to linguaholic's topic in Chinese Language | Discussion
I took me a while to understand these Chinese words... They are Fa Kin Su Pah! -
I have studied Mandarin for about one and a half year by myself with books and audiotapes I bought in Amazon. I progressed nicely and I think the grammar (or it's almost absence) is fairly simple, but I got lost with the characters. After a while, I took a few lessons on Missão de Macau here in Lisbon and I realized I wasn't making a correct pronunciation, so learning it alone was probably not the best option... :nerd:

What are the absolute basics I would need to know to go to Mexico?
caparica007 replied to A0130's topic in Spanish Vocabulary
It would be difficult to give you the basics of a language in a single post. I think there are a few free online basic courses that might help you a lot, here is a link for one that seems pretty good: http://lp.babbel.com/d/ENG_index.html?ch=SEM&l2=SPA&slc=AW16-ENGSPA&utm_campaign=ENGSPA_AW-16&utm_source=GoogleAdWords_Search&utm_term=%2Bbasic%20%2Bspanish&matchtype=b&placement=&placementcategory=&adposition=1t1&utm_content=22280108805&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CKHhkY7HwbkCFcfJtAodjAEAEg (I have tried to post this link using the Insert Hyperlink button, but somehow I didn't manage, can someone please help?) -
When did you start to learn a second language?
caparica007 replied to cbintz's topic in Language Learning
Here in Portugal we start learning English when primary school begins that is, at age seven and we keep on learning it until the 9th grade, so it's nine years of learning English! Apart from that a lot of contents on TV are in English, so that is also a good help. -
Did you learn alone or with other students?
caparica007 replied to A0130's topic in Language Learning
I have learned English and French at school and Russian and German alone at home with books I bought at Amazon. When I started progressing I got a Russian teacher that gave me private lessons and with the German I spoke with a friend on the phone and I visited Germany a few times. Spanish is pretty similar to Portuguese, so funny enough I learned it by reading books. -
Hello fellow language learners! My name is André and I am in Portugal. I have studied quite a few languages and I can speak fluently English, Spanish beside Portuguese. Hope to be able to help someone and to practice languages I don't have many chances to speak, like German or Russian.
