  1. 其實我在學校兩種字都學過。但我個人比較喜歡繁體字。我覺得繁體字比較好睇。 但有時我會用簡體字因為是容易寫.
  2. Haha, yeah, you're not going to find many Mandarin speakers in Hong Kong since their main language is Cantonese. Which dialect of Mandarin are you trying to learn? If you want standard dialect, then you should go to Beijing. But if you want to try something else, maybe you can try Nanjing or Shijiazhuang? Taiwan might also be a possibility.
  3. I'm a huge fan of idol groups XD My favorite group is Morning Musume., but I also really like AKB48/SKE48/NMB48/HKT48,etc. Like Czarownica said, it really depends on what type of music you like. I can probably recommend some songs to you if you tell me what type of music you like.
  4. It definitely helps me. I didn't realize it till later, but I just naturally started to pick up words that were in the lyrics. Of course, it didn't make me a Japanese master, but it did help a little. Listening to the song while looking at the lyrics helps even more because you get to see the characters.
  5. I'm a stresser as well . I just get really anxious about it. Even if it's not a big test, I always get that sick feeling in my stomach that I'll mess up. :speechless:
  6. Nope. I'm Chinese and I'm proud of it. I might prefer speaking in English, but I don't ever want to change my native tongue.
  7. 我來了美國差不多十六年。我是在香港出生。我沒有去過波特蘭。波特蘭是什麼地方?天氣如何?現在加州開始變寒了。 不用擔心,你的中文好好。
  8. Not too hard. Amazon has it in stock and I've also seen it in my local bookstore. If you'd like a free ebook, a simple google search will lead you to many results
  9. Haha, yup, I'm enjoying it a lot. I already found some old songs that I used to listen to as a child. It really brings back a lot of memories
  10. I didn't take the PSAT, but I definitely recommend taking it. Not only does it help you prepare for the actual SAT, but if you score well you'll also be eligible to apply for certain schloarships. And it only takes $20 (or at least, that was the cost while I was in school) so there's no harm in trying.
  11. It's so weird how it's unnecessary, yet people do it. My teachers used to tell me that commas were pauses in a sentence. But I never pause before "but" or "and", yet there are almost always commas there.
  12. I've (pretty much) lived in America all my life and I've never used "whilst". Sometimes I see people use it on the internet, but even then it's not as common as "while".
  13. 你好Sam。歡迎來到linguaholic。我叫Miya。我也住在美國。我住在加州。 讀配藥難不難?以前我媽媽也想我讀配藥。可是我沒有這個天份.
  14. When I was first studying English, I didn't put the comma before and. But after seeing authors do it so often in their books, I've started to do it as well. Here's another question for you all: Do you put a comma before "but"? Example: I would like to play, but I have to do homework. It's the same story for me. I didn't put the comma before but when I first started learning English. But then I saw it used in books and so I just started doing it too.
  15. I don't want to say I don't like it, but I'm not particularly fond of Vietnamese.
  16. @Hank If you're studying two hours a week (studying by yourself), it will take you A LONG time to get a good grasp of Chinese. If you want to get a good foundation I suggest at least 10 hours a week. Keep in mind that Chinese has a totally new set of characters. So not only do you have to learn how to speak, but you also have to learn how to read and write. If you don't want to do 10+ hours a week and you're still interested in studying Chinese then I recommend taking a course. The workload might be heavier, but Chinese classes moves faster so you'll learn more in a shorter span of time.
  17. I code-switch in the middle of the sentence. I will be talking in Chinese and then all of the sudden, I'll throw in random English words. For example, I will say "我要做project" (I have to do a project). I usually do this when I can't remember how to say the word I want to say in the language I'm talking in.
  18. I would also like to ask for a "Modify" button. Sometimes I go back to my posts and find mistakes/typos that I want to correct days after they are posted. Is it possible to have a "Modify" button for our post that doesn't have a time limit?
  19. I think I've seen that book in my local bookstore before and I flipped through a few pages. Didn't buy it, but it was kind of funny.
  20. I can still speak my native language, but I have to admit, my Chinese has gotten a lot worse (or it hasn't improved at all). In a way, I feel guilty, and that's why I decided to start studying Chinese again. I feel like people shouldn't lose their mother tongue because it's part of who they are. :shy:
  21. Wow, thanks for sharing this source Looks like it's time for me to get back into Chinese music
  22. I don't have any recommendations, but I can give you the link to the horror section on that site: http://list.iqiyi.com/www/1/1-10---------0--2-1-1-1---.html They have ratings underneath the titles so you can try the ones with higher ratings. Most of the movies have subtitles. P.S: For these Chinese streaming sites, there's usually a 15 to 1 minute advertisement in the beginning that can't be skipped.
  23. 牛郎織女 is a love story so if you're into those, then it's pretty good I think the story you're talking about is 莊周夢蝶 (Zhuāng zhōu mèng dié). I've heard of the title before, but I don't know the story. Another popular Chinese story about butterflies is 梁山伯與祝英台 (Liáng shān bó yǔ zhù yīng tái). It's also a very popular love story about butterfly lovers.
  24. I think in a mix of English and Chinese xD I code-switch a lot
  25. I think it's possible to learn 6+ languages if you're not learning them all at the same time. If you learn them all at the same time, then you'll probably get confused and mix them up. But if you learn them separately, you'll be more 'on track'. I know some people who know more than 6 languages because they're always living in different places. For those people, it's probably easier to maintain their 6+ languages because they use them daily.
