I've never regretted learning a language and I never will. I love learning languages. It's my hobby. I am happy to learn any language because I'm interested in linguistics and stuff. I only regret not learning a language fully... as in not becoming 100% fluent in it.

I don't know why I've never seen this poll until after the layout update. Anyway, I am quite traditional I guess. I still rely on classes in a classroom and textbooks to help me study. I try to focus on both spoken and written language, but because I am stronger in writing, I feel like I put more emphasis on it. Even if I can't speak very well, I can usually write and understand.

Do you think there is a bad/stupid reason to learn a language?
Miya replied to Lasonax's topic in Language Learning
This is a good question and honestly, I think there is. Of course, there's never a "stupid or bad reason" to learn, but some people learn a language simply because they are forced to. Whether it be their family or their school, some people are forced to learn another language because they "have" to. I think that's a stupid reason to learn a language. That's not actually appreciating the language itself, it's just learning because you have to. Plus if they are forced to and they have no interest in the language, they probably won't enjoy it and will tell others how bad/difficult that language is even when it's not true. -
Is it easier for you to learn the language of neighboring countries?
Miya replied to g2narat's topic in Language Learning
It has no effect on me, lol. I don't find it easier or harder to learn a language from a neighboring country. -
Can you give a little more information on your program?

Do you miss SharedTalk? I made SharedLingo
Miya replied to megaz0id's topic in Promote your Website/App/Game/Video
Wow, you made this? I think it's a great idea! I would definitely be interested in joining. It kind of reminds me of livemocha. -
[Duolingo] Sometimes, Duolingo makes us write dumb things.
Miya replied to 111kg's topic in Language Study Apps
Haha, that's interesting. I sure hope you have the opportunity to use this "ich bin eine banane" sentence in the future. By the way, what language is that? -
Why do most people find it easier to write than speak a language?
Miya replied to lushlala's topic in Language Learning
I've always been better at writing than speaking. That's why it's easier for me to write in foreign languages. Plus for writing, there's a definite "correct" way to write something. For speaking, you can't really say there's a "correct" way to speak. -
Wait, sorry, what's this? I studied French for 4 years in high school and I've never heard of this O__O

How do you like the new layout/design of linguaholic.com?
Miya replied to linguaholic's topic in Language Learning
Thanks linguaholic! That solved the problem! I was getting worried because I signed on last night as you were posting this post. I thought things were still being upgraded so I didn't think too much about the "bug". But today I saw that everyone else could post and I still couldn't so I knew it had to be a problem with Chrome. It's working fine now that I cleared my cache- 27 replies

How do you like the new layout/design of linguaholic.com?
Miya replied to linguaholic's topic in Language Learning
I like the new layout. It's sharper and more modern. But I think there's a bug with this layout on Google Chrome. I can't post anything on the forum when I'm using Chrome. I had to switch over to Windows Edge to make this post. When I try to post something on Chrome, it just gives me the option to post an attachment. I can't see any textboxes. I took a screenshot of the problem. I don't know if it's just me or if it's Chrome or if it's a bug in the system.- 27 replies

^I second this. I'm very interested in this game, but I don't want to spend money and buy something that's not worth it. Would anyone actually recommend this game?

What jobs have you had because you spoke a foreign language?
Miya replied to Colebra's topic in Language Learning
I got the job I have now because of my Japanese ability. My Japanese is far from perfect, but what I knew at that time got me a job. I'm a teacher in Japan so I had to have Japanese ability. But I don't think all jobs require foreign language ability. It's nice to be able to speak more than one language, but it's not always necessary. Whether you want to study another language or not depends on the kind of job you want. -
I think it depends on the music. The same thing happened to me in my French class. No one liked the music my teacher played so no one paid attention. But later we got to do a project on music and everyone had a good time because it was music we actually had an interest in.

Mine is by a Japanese publisher. I got it in a bookstore in Japan. But I think you can find some Japanese Kanji calendars on amazon.com

Hello! Welcome to the forum! I'm an English teacher living in Japan and I love learning Japanese Hope to see you around the Japanese forum

I own a Japanese one which teaches different "4 character idioms" every day. I keep it at work and it's really fun to study them when I have free time. I think they're a great for learning miscellaneous things that are often not taught in textbooks.

Do watching movies with subtitles help you to learn a language?
Miya replied to Oricat's topic in Language Learning
Yes, I think subtitles really helps one learn a language. I used to watch Japanese dramas/shows with English subtitles and because of that, my listening skills were amazing (in comparison to my other skills). Now I watch Japanese dramas/shows with Japanese subtitles and it helps me learn new grammar/words. It's probably not the BEST method for studying a language, but it helps and it's a more relaxing way than studying from a textbook. -
Do you prefer British English or American?
Miya replied to VNtomboy's topic in English Language | Discussion
I don't particularly prefer either one. I think they're both unique in their own ways. I mostly speak American English, but I've come to realize that I pronounce some words in a "British way". Maybe it's because I was born in Hong Kong and most people there speak British English. -
I've only heard of using "Ketchup" to refer to the red tomato sauce we use with French fries. When I hear "Catsup", I immediately think of the Simpson's episode or I think it's a joke word.

I think online translation sites/apps are only good for a word or two. You can use it to look up words, but if you want to translate sentences, then it's best to avoid it. They usually give gibberish or very ungrammatical translations.

Would you learn a language of a country you don't plan to visit?
Miya replied to primalclaws1974's topic in Language Learning
This is a really interesting question. I love learning languages, but I probably won't learn a language from a country I don't plan to visit. If I don't plan to visit that country, I'm probably not interested in its culture and language. I believe that to master a language, you must first have interest in learning it. So if I have no interest, I won't bother to learn a language. -
Question to the Japanese people.. If any.
Miya replied to Bekang's topic in Japanese Language | Discussion
Do you know the hiragana song? "AEIOU" is the first set that comes up.
