Your Pick For An Alternate Universal Language
Lithium replied to Baburra's topic in Language Learning
Romanian has a very solid and logical grammar. It would be useful for debating and talking about different aspects of society. Politicians and world leaders should speak Romanian. Even though it's more difficult than English, it's also more complex. -
My native language (Romanian) is my favorite. However, I enjoy narrating in English. It's very useful when you need to add a bit of action to the plot. But when it comes to philosophy and debates, I would rather use Romanian.

Is poetry allowed to break grammar rules?
Lithium replied to PeterPen's topic in English Language | Discussion
Poets can do anything they want. They only play with that language while they're trying to figure out an idea and expose it in a metaphoric way. They're like philosophers, but they use rhymes. So yes, they can always break grammar rules if they need to. -
Are there any people who are willing to learn Romanian?
Lithium replied to Lithium's topic in Language Exchange Corner
It's very nice to know that there are other foreigners who know things about my country such as music and culture. I am very proud to be a Romanian. However, since I don't have that much free time, I think I won't be able to teach you anything new or good. -
I've been in this situation before. My grandma didn't know any English and my dad's friends came back from the US. I needed to translate every single word. However, it was fun and I was only 14 then. They said I had a very good English.

How English sounds to non-English speakers
Lithium replied to Daedalus's topic in English Language | Discussion
This is quite interesting. This is how I've also used to see the English language and it seemed very odd to me. However, now I see what other people feel too. -
New Words in the English Language - Your Thoughts?
Lithium replied to LauraM's topic in English Language | Discussion
If there is little education in the world, there will always be words such as 'twerk'. I don't they'll be relevant in the next 20 years. However, the important word will always be used unless people will come with better or newer words. The word 'data' is among the most used and most important in the language in my opinion. -
I don't use shortcuts, not even in my own language. I think it's very important to stop using abbreviations, since they're altering the respective language.

You should firstly watch a movie in a foreign language with the subtitles on. It will help you a lot to understand the expressions and the accents. Once you've watched a few films with subtitles, try to disable them. See if you can understand what the actors are saying. Just don't struggle too much with it. It won't help you at all.

I've never done that. My palms are always sweaty and I won't be able to decipher what I wrote down on my skin. However, I did write a few notes in my agenda when I was really busy and I had very long days. They weren't only the routine things to remember, but also different information from school, such as English Tenses.

It's a very difficult thing in my opinion. Not only that it requires a vast vocabulary, but you also need a lot of self confidence. Personally, I've never tried such a thing even if I had the chance. Maybe one day, I'll try it too. Maybe I'll also succeed. However, I find it very difficult to have a relationship with a foreign partner unless you master her/his language.

What is your preferred way to teach a language?
Lithium replied to Lacey's topic in Language Learning
I would debate different topics with my students (if I were a teacher). Depending on their English level and their age, I'd open different types of debates, starting from day to day things and ending with religion vs atheism, political debates or philosophy. This way, I'd understand a few more things about their personalities and they would learn that language more easily. -
Have you ever tried to learn a Conlang? (Ancient Post)
Lithium replied to Medza's topic in Conlangs | Discussion
I have never tried learning another author's language. However, I have tried to make my own language and alphabet with the help of my friends (of course). This has happened 4 years ago. We would talk every day in our new language and nobody understood us. It sounded a bit like Russian and people would ask us if we swore at them in Russian. Unfortunately, we have never built a grammar basis and that language slowly died. -
There is no better way of learning an accent except by living among the people that are using the respective accent. If you have a talent in learning languages, you only need a little bit of auditory intelligence in order to learn such a thing. To me, a single month in Australia has improved my English accent. There are a few easy to learn accents such as the aussie one. However, it's quite difficult to learn any kind of accent unless you are at least at the intermediate level of learning the language.

Is English part of your education?
Lithium replied to betita03's topic in English Language | Discussion
Yes it is. I've been learning it since the 3rd grade and now I'm an intermediate. -
I haven't tried it yet, but it doesn't seem so difficult. Maybe I'll learn the aussie accent this summer.
-
That's a shame. I hope they would have never reused this word again.

Favorite Books to read in English
Lithium replied to tulosai's topic in English Language | Discussion
They are very good for English learners. However, I think Tolkien's books are the most enjoyable experience. -
Do you over use "LOL" when you write to your friends?
Lithium replied to Jaxter's topic in English Language | Discussion
I never use internet abbreviations. I don't agree with them. They ruin our language. -
They can learn other languages from an early age. It is very recommended. A young child can learn things faster.

Do you think "body language" translates between cultures?
Lithium replied to justusforus's topic in Language Learning
Body language is the easiest kind of language in the world. It seems they are the same in almost every country. I can understand a foreigner only by looking at his body language. -
I think my first word was 'mama'. It was nothing special.
-
It's a very hard thing to do. However, if one succeeds, it becomes funny and great. Mimicking an accent is a very rare thing in my opinion.

Correct grammar is very important in my opinion. It can change a phrase's meaning very easily.
