  1. My husband is a qualified English teacher and part of his training in the past was to teach a complete beginners who knew only few English words. He mentioned that it was the hardest part to do even though he is a native English speaker. So being a non native I was able to help him with the task such as explaining to him of what might a beginner expects in the first few lessons of their course.
  2. Though I'm already able to communicate, understand, and listen well in few languages but I'm still learning everyday from others. I'm not planning to become very well but it's always nice to learn a new thing about the language I speak everyday and be able to use new words when I'm communicating with others.
  3. I'm a Mario Kart fan and I did always wonder why the monkey is called Donkey Kong when he is not even a donkey! By the way, one thing that I found to be funniest here in my country is the lottery. One of the lottery companies here is called TOTO 4D. But in my mother tongue language, TOTO means female's V. So when a group of villagers from my village are going to buy a lottery number then they will have an endless jokes about going to buy a female's V!
  4. When I was still learning English a few years ago, this is exactly what I did. I'd watch English movies (only those with high quality one and not pirated with made up subtitles) with the subtitles on. Even though I was usually more focused into reading the subtitles and not the movie itself but it did help so much. Nowadays I'm so happy that I do not need the subtitles anymore unless I was watching a Korean or a Japanese drama
  5. I'm still using both words nowadays but I use "check" if I was asking for my bill at a restaurant and "cheque" for a bank cheque. I'm honestly not very sure how others use these words nowadays so I'm also interested to read their replies.
  6. I spoke only one language until I was 8 years old then I started my second when I was in primary. I started school quite late and I was kind of far behind everybody but I managed to catch them in the end. I had to learn my second language at that time because it is a national language in my country. I can't remember how the learning went or how difficult it was but I guess we all learnt a lot faster when we were younger compare to learning when we are already an adult.
  7. I really dislike watching a dubbed version of any movie, I prefer watching them with subtitle and listen to the original voice of the character. The feeling can be a little different when you know very well that the movie you're watching is dubbed but I'm sure it's fine for some people especially those who dislike having a subtitle on.
  8. I don't mind being corrected in a proper way but coming from a country where English is not a first language, I also don't mind when people make a spelling or grammar mistake. At the end of the day everyone makes mistake and we can of course correct them if it is necessary.
  9. Learning English and teaching English are two completely different things to do. Even if you are a native English speaker, how high is your confidence to teach English to a group of people in a class? For me, even though I have been speaking English for few years but I still haven't got the confidence of being an English teacher I think I can only do it with one person at a time in a casual way of learning
  10. Hi I will be happy to be a talking partner as I'm quite interested to know a bit of your language too. I also make a fun English language quiz that you may want to try.
  11. I like Scottish accent! Though a lot of people say it is a very strong accent but that is probably why I like it.
  12. I played this game a few months ago and I must say that it was fun, though it was a lot more challenging than I have thought. Some of them took me ages to guess and I even asked people around me if they had any idea of what the word was but nobody was able to help me. I gave up in the end because I was stuck for weeks on one of the level and I honestly had and never had an idea of what it was
  13. I'm also having a problem when deciding whether to write "everytime" as "every time" or "everytime" whenever I'm writing, I tend to just write "everytime" but then I'll get a spell check telling me it was wrong. So I'm trying to keep writing this word as "every time" because I hate to see the red line showing up every time.
  14. I have moved to Middle East before without any knowledge about their language. But I had faith on the people there that they would speak English well and I will not have a problem in terms of communication and going around. Everything went well and I slowly learnt a few words then short sentences after. Now I'm back to my own country without ever being able to speak their language but it was such a fun adventure and I would never mind to move somewhere with different language which I can't speak.
  15. When I'm having a conversation with somebody I prefer to use only one language at a time. But lately, most of my friends would mix our language and English when we are having conversations. I don't mind of course but it feels awkward to me. It's fine if they are only using certain words but no, they say a long sentence in our language followed by a long sentence in English. Are you doing the same or have you encountered somebody to speak that way?
  16. I have always been texting using full sentences as I don't actually know whatever shortcut people use on every words. I sometimes receive texts from my friends with all the shortcuts so I don't reply them and wait until they call and explain to me what exactly they are talking about
  17. Well I'm a music lover so as long as the music sounds good and relaxing then I don't mind what the language is and whether I understand it or not I have a lot of music on my laptop that I do not understand but I love listening to.
  18. When I was still learning English I used to turn the English subtitle on to see what the correct sentences are in English when saying something in my own language. Even when I'm watching English or American movies I will turn the English subtitles on to see how exactly they pronounce every words. I must say that this method had helped me so much in the past and I'm sure it will help others too.
  19. I don't really remember of having trouble with those words when I started learning English but I was annoyed a lot because there are many words that come with different spelling, same pronunciation, and different meaning. I made more mistakes with other words in the past and I actually still do today but at least never with their, there, and they're.
  20. Communicating with others using English language will increase your confidence very quick. There are many people who can speak English well in my country but because they don't practice by communicating they are still shy when they really have to speak English.
  21. I have tried using the LOL while texting or chatting with my friends but I never really get used to it because I am always using hahaha. One thing that I'm really confuse about is when my friend writes LOL to me, I am not sure whether to say it like LOL or hahaha especially when I'm reading her message aloud.
  22. I'm up for learning the basic of Romanian language as I do have few Romanian friends who speak very well in English. Are you interested learning some Malay? Malay is not my mother tongue but it is a national language in my country. My mother tongue language is Dusun.
  23. You have your point. If red car is translated into my language, Malay, then it would not makes sense at all. We would say car first then red after  that is why if a Malay speaker tries to translate from English to Malay without knowing the differences of their structures then the translations would go mad :wacky: But I don't think it goes the same for some languages though.
  24. I have used Google translate a few times and I found that it is only good for short translations / short sentences. There was once I put in a whole paragraph of English articles and translated it into my language and the result was so funny, it went completely upside down. But how can I complaint though, it is a free service. I really like the Bing translation service provided on Facebook, now I can understand what my other friends with different languages are saying in their statuses. And what's more, I can easily comment my thought on their statuses if I wanted to in English Language.
  25. Oh I have few friends who barely speak English and neither I know their language very well. But because we have common interests we do find ourselves laughing and have fun a lot. And it is more fun when we get to skip a more serious conversations including judging others and so on. I don't really mind about language that much when it comes to friendships and common interest.
