  1. "A blessing in disguise" I like this idiom because it reflects optimism. Whenever I encounter difficulties in life, I just think that they are blessings in disguise.
  2. Anyone here a fan of Lang Leav. I love her collection of poems "Love and Misadventures". I consider myself very romantic, so I greatly appreciate her work. One of her poems that I love the most is this:
  3. For some reason, I find it difficult to remember the right spelling of the following words: 1. separable 2. shepherd 3. consciousness But since I listed them here, I think that I will remember them better now! Haha!
  4. Thank you for this post. Though I consider myself fluent in English, I still have a hard time remembering all the nitty-gritty of the rules sometimes. Keeping this list of reminders is of great help to me. Thanks!
  5. Filipino: 1. Frog: Kokak-kokak 2. Gecko: Tuko-tuko 3. Cat: Ngiyaw-ngiyaw 4. Bird: Twit-twit
  6. Books are great sources of quotations. I have read many books throughout my life, and there are a lot of quotations that have stayed with me. My most favorite book quote is from The Little Prince: "What is essential is invisible to the eye". What about you? What is your favorite book line?
  7. Hey! Thanks for sharing this! I have already heard of Grammar Girl, and it is my go-to website when I am having grammar difficulties. I haven't checked the site for a while now, so thank you for reminding me!
  8. I am recently binge-reading books again because I have a lot of free time these past few weeks. I love reading classic novels because the use of the language is very beautiful. Also, the stories and lessons incorporated in these novels are very unique. Can anyone suggest good classic literature for me to read? Thank you very much!
  9. I write feature articles sometimes as a freelance writer. Although I already have an 8-5 job as a writer for a government agency, I still enjoy writing about the things that I want. Sometimes, I write for magazines and newspapers. Although the pay is per piece, it is still fun.
  10. Nice list! As a writer by profession, I sometimes have a hard time looking for other words to avoid being repetitive. Thank you for sharing this! I will copy this down and tape it to my journal.
  11. I like expressions like this one. I agree that is too dramatic! However, I guess that this is the beauty of language. One can be dramatic in expressing his or her feelings yet still be understood by other people.
  12. This is today's Word of the Day! roguery Definition: (noun) Reckless or malicious behavior that causes discomfort or annoyance in others. Synonyms: mischief, devilment, rascality Usage: Ms. Adams caught Tommy dipping Sally's pigtail in his inkwell and gave him detention for his roguery.
  13. Thank you for these tips! Though I have been speaking and writing in English for a long time now, I still forget some of the key rules in grammar. I hope you share more rules/tips in the future!
  14. Personally, cover art is a big factor when I am deciding on which books to buy. I don't like cover arts that tend to be too general or those that only show the title. I also hate books that show actors on the cover. This goes for those stories that have been adapted to movies. Is cover art important to you?
  15. Yes. I notice this when I looking for quotations to use on our monthly posters at work. Sometimes, on two different websites, I would find the same quote but attributed to different people. This is why cross checking references is very important especially if your source of information is the Internet.
  16. There are days when I also feel unmotivated to read. What I do is I read just a few pages every few hours or so until I feel better or until I get to the good part of the novel I am reading. Also, try to reaf just short stories for a bit.
  17. One of the best short stories I have read is 1408 by Stephen King. It has been made into a movie starring John Cusack. I really liked this one because it is scary and very unique. Actually, I love all the works of Stephen King because they are real page-turners. He has many collections of short stories that have been published in the past.
  18. The best online dictionary for me is thefreedictionary.com. It's very easy to navigate, and it has great features such as Spelling Bee, Hangman, and This Day in History. However, the best feature of this website is the "Word of the Day". I have learned a lot of words because of this. Today's word of the day is: con·tig·u·ous adjective. 1. Sharing an edge or boundary; touching. 2. Neighboring; adjacent. 3.a. Connecting without a break: the 48 contiguous states. b. Connected in time; uninterrupted: served two contiguous terms in office.
  19. Hello there! Welcome to Linguaholic! I am studying Korean. I can write and read Hangul now, though I still don't understand what I am reading! I hope that you will have a great time here! Have a great day!
  20. It usually depends on which subject I am having an exam for. Usually, when the exam is English or Science, I feel okay. I understand these subjects a lot. However, if the exam is anything that is related to math like algebra or economics, I feel agitated and nervous. One time, before a midterm exam on algebra when I was in first year college, I almost puked because I couldn't find "x". I ended up copying from my seatmate. Thank God for nice seatmates!
  21. Through the years, there are a lot of movie quotes or phrases that stayed with me. I will share with you some of the lines I love the most. 1. "You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on." -- Mr. Darcy to Elizabeth (Pride and Prejudice, 2005) 2. "How old do you have to be before you know the difference between right and wrong? Do you have to be eighteen? Do you have to be eighteen before you can bring yourself to own up to a lie? There are soldiers of eighteen old enough to be left to die on the side of the road! Did you know that?" -- Robbie Turner (Atonement) 3. "Everybody has problems. Everybody has bad times. Do we sacrifice all the good times because of them?" -- Phoebe Banks (Enchanted)
  22. I am Filipino. Here in our country, when I started going to school, the first language I was taught was English. In fact, I can speak and write better in English than my native language. This proves to be useful at work and interviews because I have to deal with different kinds of people in the government. However, there are also disadvantages because I can't compose articles, essays, and speeches in Filipino which is sometimes required of me. Anyway, I agree that English is the easiest language to learn because there are only a few grammar rules to learn. As long as you understand the subject and verb agreement rule, you will have a firm grasp of the English language.
  23. I never use text speech or abbreviations when I send messages to people through phone or instant messengers. Frankly, I don't like it when I receive text messages in text speech because I don't understand it and there are times when I can't read it properly. Thus, I end up misunderstanding the message. I hope that people will understand my reasons for disliking text speech. I feel like it's killing proper languages slowly.
  24. Hi, everyone! So we all know that the English language has two kinds of verbs: regular and irregular. Fortunately, most of the verbs we use nowadays are regular meaning that they change very little in their past or present forms. The bad news is that we can't avoid irregular verbs. So we won't be confused, it's best to remember some of the most commonly used irregular verbs in the English language. I attached a list below from MERIDIAN that we can all use.
  25. Thanks for sharing this! I can read Hangul easily, and I learned how by watching videos on YouTube and enrolling in a Korean class here in the Philippines. My only problem is that even if I can read, I don't understand what I am saying. I'm worried that I might read something in Korean and find out that the meaning is bad. Hahaha. Anyway, thanks for sharing again! 고마워
