It would be easy if the new word sounds like the native word counterpart like in the word blue which is azur in French, azul in Portuguese and asul in my native Filipino language. For words that I could not find anything to associate it with I just try to find something else that I can use to make me remember it, it could be personal to make it even more memorable. The labeling and force memorization may only work short term for me.

Blogs are not yet popular when I was learning the English language. I made my personal hand written journals back then using the foreign language and I am glad it helped me. Now, I have my own blogs and continue using this language. I am planning to create another blog to document my learning experience using another foreign language.

I got lots of Filipino friends working outside of the Philippines. Filipinos are warm and friendly people so it would not be a surprise if they make a lot of friends wherever they may be. Some of these friends are teaching their foreign friends the pinoy language and some of them are quite fluent by now.

I am confused how to use the conditional word "If". Do I have to make the verb in the present or past tense? What is the right rule? Example: "If I tell you " or "If I told you"

Every language comes with its own peculiarity. I guess you just have to memorize and remember by heart the simple rule everyone is talking about on this thread. If you forget it normally your mind will rationalize and tell you that all verbs must agree in their tenses which is this case is not right.

My friends are learning a little Japanese because they are addicted to reading manga comics. They do not want the english versions if there are any that is why they are doing their best to learn the language to better appreciate the comic books. From what I see they are doing self study using some textbooks and they also watch movies.

I always remind myself of the main goal why I wanted to learn a new language. I got two reasons or goals, the first one is to advance my career and the second one is to help make my future travel plan more convenient when it comes to talking to native speakers. I think the first reason is what motivates me for now although just like anyone else I also feel the lack of interest or movitation

I want to learn French because I wanted to visit France in the future. Now, I am trying to learn Spanish because I want to become a bilingual customer service representative.

I guess Duolingo is not bad for a free app. It can give you the right direction if you are serious about learning a new language. I think it is better than the others that I tried wherein I was taught about animals, colors and what not. Those lessons does not help you at all when you finally use the language

They say if you use that new word six times it will be yours forever. I had done that before and I think it worked for me.

I could not download the game yet but I will let my friends know about it because they would love to learn the Japanese language. I must say you have the skills to make it and I hope you could come up with another language using the same game. Good job

Nothing can beat a real person doing the translation. Computers or software have limitations they could not translate the subtleties of a given instance or language. When you use translation services you sometimes see some weird phrases that do not make sense right?

I wonder if Spanish is related to Brazilian Portuguese? When I hear these languages spoken I think there is some sort of resemblance I am not sure though. I think you will be able to learn Portuguese quite easily on that note. Nice to see you here and welcome to forum hope you enjoy your stay.

I love the characters in the Japanese language or anything similar to it in appearance. I know I do not understand the language but the characters are beautifully made. They look like art to me. I like the fact that they look like intriguing symbols to me.

I take it with lots of excitement and interest to keep me motivated. It is not easy for me to learn a new language. I do have an app installed on my tablet which I bring with me when I go out. I also spend a few minutes or hours each day to learn a new lesson, practice and watch tv series. It is like learning and applying it at the same time. I do not have the guts yet to talk to native speakers but I am hoping soon

What if your language teacher is a virtual one? What kind of gift is fit for the set up. Maybe an online gift card that could be used anywhere in the world. An ebook perhaps that he or she might appreciate. You can still send gifts but that may take time to ship and could be costly.

Search the ABAKADA online. That is the foundation of learning how to speak and pronounce Tagalog. Once you are familiar with the sounds you can then combine syllables and will be surprised how easy it is to learn our language.

Every person learns differently from others. What may work for you would not work for the kind of learner that I am. Learning for me could be quite easier if the lessons are presented in a well structured manner with complete notes, reference, exercises. If there is a good interaction with the teacher and with other students the better for me.

Learning a new language requires one to memorize a lot of things. You need to remember the basic grammar rules, the spelling, the vocabulary etc. Admit it or not when you age your memory may lag behind making it difficult to remember the things you tackled in your lessons. Unlike those students below twenty they seem like a sponge ready to absorb anything thrown at them. The exception is getting yourself immersed daily with the native speakers.

My language is Filipino. We have five vowels and each of them only has one form or sound nothing complicated like the dipthongs of the English language. We do have our conjugations too but not as complicated as the Spanish language and ours is quite easy to learn and you can almost always predict what will be the resulting new term will be given the root word.

There are hundreds to thousands of new words that you need to remember if you are serious about learning a new language. That would require the same number of flashcards should I choose that route so I just create my mental flashcards by associating each word with something that is directly related to or quite similar to my native language. When there is no relation at all I just force my mind to just remember it

Knowing the difference and when to use each of them is quite a challenge for me what more if I will use them with different subject to agree to hence conjugations.

That is exactly how I feel now. I am demotivated to proceed because I am finding it hard to learn what I ought to. I guess you are right about being too hard on ourselves when the results we expected fall short. I admire those people who had spent years learning on their own. Good for you @lushlala you were able to go to these countries and had an experience using their respective language.
