  1. This is definitely a good online opportunity for people who would want to share their knowledge about a certain language, and be able to earn some profit through it. Vice versa, this is ideal for language students who are looking for ways to broaden their vocabulary on various languages. Thank you so much for sharing! Very relevant and helpful.
  2. I think I am both a listener and a reader. There would be times that I find just simply listening to the teacher an effective way for me to learn. If the teacher is really good at explaining the lessons, I could be able to understand them much easier. Sometimes though, I just do self-study and reading is my favorite way of acquiring knowledge.
  3. I have already tried learning the Japanese language. I am still not fluent in Nihonggo though, but I now know some of their basic greetings. Anyway, as for me, I want to study another foreign language both for fun and for serious reasons. I do want to explore various cultures and languages for research purposes, and at the same time, I want to be able to enjoy the experience of doing it. I believe they go hand in hand.
  4. I would definitely go with the Hebrew alphabet. It's already considered as ancient even since before Jesus Christ was born. What kind of language alphabet would ever compete with that, right? I believe the Bible was first written in Hebrew as well.
  5. Hi there! My mother tongue is Tagalog, and I definitely would love to teach you about our language. Our alphabet is actually pretty similar with the English alphabet, so you won't have much problem with that. Well, I think the best way you can learn how to speak and write Tagalog is to familiarize yourself with our language by watching a lot of Filipino movies. It would also be much better if you would go here in our country and immerse yourself into the language experience. Best of luck!
  6. Probably because they don't have passion for it. If you don't have any interest in one subject, you would possibly just fail in it. I think the best thing to do is to spark their interest in literature and creative wring. Give them books to read. Let them write whatever topic they want to discuss about. Widen their imagination by giving them different scenarios. Boost their creativity.
  7. I also don't live in the US, but I really think it's a great idea to reward the teachers for their hard work and determination to educate young minds. Well, we are now celebrating Teacher's Day here in the Philippines, and I have now been seeing a lot of students giving warm greetings to their teachers. I believe even just a simple appreciation for them would make them feel happy and fulfilled.
  8. I believe Google Translate is a good tool to use for online translations. However, I don't think we should depend that much on their translation results as I find them not accurate enough. We could utilize it just for giving us an idea about what this sentence is about, but we should not rely everything on it.
  9. It has never became a problem to me. I am not a native speaker of English, but I always practice the English language due to my work, actually almost everyday. On the other hand, I often use my mother tongue to communicate with my friends and family. Well, as long as you do practice both the foreign language and your first language, it's not going to be difficult for you.
  10. Aside from Shakespeare's works, one of the hardest English books I have read and finished is probably "The English Patient" by Michael Ondaatje. I don't know why, but the whole novel was sort of difficult to understand.
  11. I have been hearing this English idiom since I was a child, "Let bygones be bygones." I think we should all practice this one into our lives. Let's forget about the past, and be reconciled. Life is way too short to hold grudges against other people. Be happy and move forward.
  12. I don't care much about the race of my teacher, whether he/she is a native speaker of this particular language or not. As long as the teacher is knowledgeable enough to teach this particular language, and if he/she uses good language teaching methods, I am totally fine with it. Anyway, not all native English speakers are good in grammar and vocabulary. I know a lot of native English speakers who still don't know the difference between "your" and "you're."
  13. Well, it could possibly help you acquire a new language. However, since your only resource for studying another language is video games, the whole language learning/studying experience is going to be sort of limited. There would be no other materials to indulge yourself into, thus, you won't be totally fluent in the target language. I would say, this method wouldn't be enough.
  14. We may have a lot of regrets in life, but I really think we shouldn't live in the past, instead, we must live in the present and look forward to the future. Just because you weren't able to learn a new language when you were much younger doesn't mean you cannot pursue it now that you're older. It's never too late to do something.
  15. Call me old-fashioned, but I would always prefer reading the traditional way. I also love the smell of both old and new books. There's really something romantic about sniffing their pages. I don't totally dislike audio books and eBooks, they're actually pretty convenient.
  16. Thanks for sharing these tips to us here. Very relevant and helpful. Honestly, there would also be times that I would get a little confused which one to use between "should" and "could." It's a good thing that you have given us a detailed information about the right usage of each one of these modals.
  17. When you use the past form of the verb "do" which is "did," automatically, you must use the present form of the verb after it. For example: - I did love him. - I did check my email. - I didn't buy her flowers. - I didn't like the dress.
  18. I really think that one of the best methods in mastering a particular language's vocabulary is to make a huge list of words in the target language, always make time to read each one of them to be able to grasp their meaning and for memorization purposes. Just like what you have mentioned, this should be done consistently.
  19. I think the best way to learn German by yourself is to get familiarized with their language. If you don't want to hire a German language tutor, then you may just want to study German vocabulary and grammar rules online, and try to watch German movies/shows all the time. These resources might be of great help to you. Best of luck!
  20. I wouldn't say I like audio books, and I also wouldn't say I hate them. Well, I really wouldn't mind listening to audio books in my spare time. However, if I were to choose between audio books and paperback, of course, I am definitely going with the real ones.
  21. I totally love this quote from J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye." It's a mix of humor, sarcasm, and reality. I could definitely relate to it. “I am always saying "Glad to've met you" to somebody I'm not at all glad I met. If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though.”
  22. I believe those words are considered emotive language, slang, colloquial, and jargon. And just for research purposes, I think they should be taught in school not to be used for academic writings, but just for understanding other language variations.
  23. I think I have already stumbled across this learning method called "Active Listening" when I took the short course in Teaching English as a Second Language. And yes, I do believe this would be an effective way of acquiring knowledge since both speaking and listening skills of the students are being honed. Anyway, I am glad this totally worked on your end.
  24. I have already tried studying multiple languages such as Japanese and French. However, I have never became fluent in each one them. I just know basic greetings in both Japanese and French. Well, it really depends on a person whether studying multiple languages would work for him/her or not. As for me, I think I have to focus and master one language first before going to another one.
  25. Hello there! As a teenager, I think you would totally enjoy reading these books: - To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee - The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger - Looking for Alaska by John Green - The Maze Runner series by James Dashner
