Yep, mostly because I have wide taste in music I'll pretty much listen to any genre (except for country music, the category is ve~ry slim with me), so because of this I have a tendency to try and find the soundtrack from said show/movie so I end up finding really old to foreign songs and since I mostly watch stuff in the native tongue that I know/studying I end up finding songs with that language range... So yeah...

Do watching movies with subtitles help you to learn a language?
DivaDee replied to Oricat's topic in Language Learning
Yes, that one of the ways I link certain english words with words of a different languages, sometimes I'll try to actually look up the what the word is an another language and me and my sis will end up writing it down somewhere and continue saying it to each other (my bro sadly is uncomfortably with other languages) but none the less, using subtitles is a good assist to learning new languages... So yeah... -
Do you invent your own words in your native language?
DivaDee replied to anna3101's topic in Language Learning
Sometimes most of my combo words are swear words cause due to the fact that I live down south in America, you sometimes think of new ways to diss people to get the bullies off your back (which ended up spreading like wildfire in my school)... And since English is mostly madeup of almost every word new words are constantly being made up all the time... like... Swag... which apparently means cool... I hate that word so much... But sometimes me and my siblings will make combo words in English (only), English-French, English-Japanese, English-Chinese, English-Spanish or an amalgam of three or more languages... So yeah... -

Why someone wouldn't want to teach a language to a friend?
DivaDee replied to Mameha's topic in Language Learning
Well, I can't really say... Maybe it's because she uncomfortabe with teaching people other languages, or maybe she just doesn't want to teach you mostly because for reasons of her own accord... She just might want to keep to herself or keep you from understanding her family... Just like you I asked if my friend if she could teach me Lithuanian, but sadly she declined, mostly because even though most of her family can speak her gramdmother is extremely racist and she didn't wan't me understanding anything her grandmother saying... So yeah... So in the they have their reasons... -
Did you learn a second language in school growing up?
DivaDee replied to Cap2jitsu's topic in Language Learning
For me it was during middle school that I learn some Spanish even though I was never very good with and they only taught us so much before the school year was out so I only like bottom of the barrel amount of Spanish... But once I got into I highschool I decided to study French and we learn a whole lot more than I did when I was taking Spanish in middle school... I'm sad that thay don't teach differnet languages when you're in elemetary school... -
British English declared most 'attractive accent'
DivaDee replied to lushlala's topic in Language Learning
Not only do I agree on british accents being hot, but I also have a slight thing for Australian accents, French, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, and there are a few others that I can't recall right now... <3 -
Are you a different person when you speak a foreign language?
DivaDee replied to anna3101's topic in Language Learning
Well for me depending on what language speak, determined how my personality slightly shifts along with the tone of voice... French- When I start speaking whether in the accent or in the actual tounge, I sound like a grown woman who even though she's very sweet, she runs a tight business, with like atleast like 5 guys after her on a day to day basis... Japanese- It's different with the accent vs the tounge... Cause when I speak using the accent I sound slightly like a geisha... But when I speak using the actual tounge, I sound wa~y younger than I need too... Like preteen young.... Chinese- I've been slightly lacking in my studies, so I can't 100% remember how I sound... So yeah... -
Well in personal opinion here are the languages I think that sound sophisticated: British, Austrailian, French, Japanese, Itailian, Korean and Latin... All so very very sophisticated and all so~ very charming/enchanting to the ear <3 >//w//<

The languages I'm trying to mostly learn/study/use/speak are... French- Mostly once me and my sister get enough money, were going to get the hell out of America and move overseas to France (and no not dead center in Paris...), cause me and sis don't want to be here when $#*7 hit the fan... Japanese- Mostly due to the fact that me, my siblings and my friends all want to go to Japan, I want to be able to truly enjoy the experience over there without anything getting lost in translation... Chinese- They have so much rich history that when I go over there, just like with Japan, I want to be able to understand everything so I can have a truly wonderful experience without anything being simplified or watereddown/roughly translated because I can't speak the language Korean and Vietnamese- Same reasons as Chinese and Japanese, and another thing I forgot to mention is that fact that I enjoy (J)animes/(C)kung-fu movies/(K)soap operas and I also wanted to try all of those countries foods/desserts...

Do you ever get confused between languages?
DivaDee replied to sammie_bee's topic in Language Learning
It's mostly cause if you learn languages with similiar words or pronunciations then any language you've learn/already know will sometimes become the default prenuncition of certain words you see/hear. I had a fellow student in my highschool class who slightly did the samething as you; we were learning the French word for "Delicious" which is "Délicieux (Adj.)", but what he said by accident was "Delicioso (Adj.)" which was the Spanish word for "Delicious", and the reason he said that was the slightly the same reason you made the same mistake, before he studied French, he studied Spanish... So no matter what you're doing you have to slow down so you can train your mind to be sesitive to those linguistic differences... Or elso you'll start speaking Spanish to the French, Chinese to the Japanese, German to the Russians, and so on and so forth... -
No matter what I prefer writing ALL of my notes down and even if I can't I'll use a recording device, so I can go back and get all the notes I missed, also I don't approve of cheating so even if I had my recoreder with me I would never use it during a liguistics test... No matter how old or desperate I become...
-
Though I have done that from time to time I still prefer the native tounge of what I'm listening to, becuase even though it's kinda refreshing to hear through another countries interpretation of them, I prefer their native tounge cause it's how the game was made their are too many translation errors when it comes down to real languages so I leave it the way it is (vs made up languages that is left up to the creator on how to make the language sound and translate into other languages). So in the end they may work hard, but in the end they have to be careful or else they're going to make the language barrier even bigger... Or more confusing...

Why Doesn't US teach Languages properly?
DivaDee replied to RhodaDEttore's topic in Language Learning
Hey I'm also American (sad to say... TAT''') The reason that American schools don't have alot language courses is mostly due to the fact that since other countries learn English for political reasons, so America doesn't really put much effort into teaching their children how to speak other languages and becuase of this you have people in their early teens to adult year trying learnig to languages in school, that only goes to a certain level before it stops... So you have people semi-fluent in that specific language (unless you find/have those teachers who are dedicated to their jobs and are truly culturally acceptive and wants to truly help their students actually LEARN the laguage) and even then you only have two language choices which is French or Spanish (both languages of love, as if the pregnancy rate wasn't high enough... Sorry...)! Though (not to be racist, but it's gonna happen) they're too many majorities (Anglo-Saxons) up North for (I think) America to care so in the end maybe if my fellow minorites dispered more up north and started intermingling more we could make America notice that there needs to be boost in the education system (not Japan good, but still better than what we've got now...), but none the less, it's mostly due ignorance, racsism (no it's not dead yet...even though other countries do/don't hate our guts they still put with our shit...), and the fact that even though they say we're the "Great Melting Pot of the World" they still don't do anything to back up the meaning behind those words... Oh...Crap... Sorry for rambling, but I'm trying to get the hell out of America..... 636 -
My story wasn't 100% like that my Ex's parents (especially his mom whom he still lives with...) couldn't speak English (well she could, but her accent was so thick that the only person out of my family members that COULD understand her was me... so yah) But my Ex was trilingual, He could speak fluent English, Vietnamese and was semi-fluent in French (same language courses; different periods)... I wanted him to teach me Vietnamese, but he never really got around to it... (Then we had a stupid argument that has nothing to do with this topic and well he's my Ex...) So yah...

So what if I learn a language from a country I'm not trying going to, I could be trying learn to speak to a person who can't speak english and help him/her out, so you know they can actually enjoy the culture (if there is anything to enjoy...), or... y'know that person might wanna be in a relationship with me and we try to learn eachothers language to overcome the language barrier between us... Y'know stuff like that... =///w///='''

How great is the language barrier in the United States?
DivaDee replied to primalclaws1974's topic in Language Learning
Well due to the fact I live in the South, they're alot of fellow minorities down here, plus the school I went to you could constantly here differnet languages where ever you went from Spanish (whether it was native speakers or cause of the class courses) to Asian dialects (to many differnet dialects to dicipher...) to even languages like Lithuanian, Arabic, Hebrew, and also French (mostly from the class courses but on the occasion you'd find a native speaker)... Along with the standard down south "southern accent" to the stereotypical interpretation of black people with "ghetto slang", and you ended up having a colorful array of multilingual people and interactions. -
When I get mad my linguistics kinda go all over the place and use almost every other language I know... Also I've had some firend who they got angry they started cursing at each other in their native tounges (Japanese and Lithuanian), even though they could understand eachother I could barely to halfway understand them while I was trying to calm them down... For me and friends multiple languages would fly when emotions where tested...

Okay well this is where the concept of Romanji come into play, Romanji (for those who are unfamiliar with the concept of it) is the name/term used for the description of the English written format of the pronunciation of the kanji of any Asian dialect, especially for On-yumi and Kun-yumi. So pretty much once you find the Romanji of said kanji in their respective languages and match it up to said Kanji characters you should be able to know what it's saying...

The reason I learn the languages I learn is well because of the fact that I always get introduced to the culture first (whether it's their ancient or modern culture) and because of this, it gets me interested in wanting to learn more about them, but the problem with that is certain things get lost in translation from that historical event in it's native tounge to English so I try to learn the native tounge so I can truly understand the history, culture and way of living of that country... Even if some of those countries study/speak English...

When it comes down to me when I start to lose interest in a language I'm learning, I just go back to the point/origin of my motivation and that always gets me fired up and going again. So now I'm able to get my mind focused again and continue the learning process/studying process of the language I'm studying at the time...

Is it for fun or is there a reason behind it?
DivaDee replied to Trellum's topic in Language Learning
Well I'm studying different languages for both reasons and here's why: French- Becuase I used to study it in school and I endede up faling in love with the culture and the language so wanted to continue studying it and also one day I'm going to live there (mostly to get out of America and cause they have amazing health care). Japanese- As a kid I watched/read alot of anime/manga so because of this I wanted to learn the language so I could go to Japan and visit there for a couple of weeks and see the sites and explore the culture and history. Chinese- Kinda the same reason for Japanese, for why I want to learn Chinese, but it was with old kung fu and war movies (Yes even the badly dubbed ones), that got me interested in learning Chincese (both dialects). So that way I can also go to China to their vast history, dynasties, culture and way of living.- 30 replies

The audio sounds like "Tarah. Fi (or Fee or Fie). Autumn" But other than that I can't really dicipher what in the world that is. For all we know it could be the word "Autumn" in unknown languages or anciect languages until last part where it tells what it is in English... But no one knows for sure so keep digging...

Should I study two languages simultaneously?
DivaDee replied to andella's topic in Language Learning
I actually try to learn multiple languages at the same time, so that way I can compare and contrast the phrases and speech patterns and understand the differences between each of the languages, to see how many of the dialects intertwine within each other espcailly since almost every dialect derives from Latin... -
Sad thing about me is when I dream, any language I ever learn or heard I dream in said language or languages... Or it does the weird thing that I don't like is that'll combine the languages toghter so most of the language in my dreams sorta sounds like the Minions and that always scares me to death... Or the ones I rea~lly love when the dreams are speed up the near light speed and I can barely hear anything and it turns into a high pitched shrill noise... (I hate my dreams....)
