I don't know if most parents are willing or qualified to teach their kids languages, but one thing is for sure, if they are fluent in more than one language they should talk to them in those languages, the kids with learn through the example. :ninja:

Lol, you actually said that? In Norwegian (norse?)? I imagine the look on their faces... For me the weirdest of knowing a foreign language is forgetting it and when you try to speak nothing comes out! :doubtful:

I think this is an issue that affects all native English countries no? I think that it's harder for the governments to see languages as a priority when your native language is English, but companies are well aware of that need and they do hire language experts, if you have technical knowledge and language I think you'll have a great job.

That might be it, reading aloud. To be honest I never tried reading aloud when studying languages by myself, but it's pretty common in classrooms and it's essential when you want to grasp the spoken language...

Ahah, it's hard to say, I suppose the best language for us to curse must always be our native language, for me there's no language to curse like Portuguese. Sure, I find entertaining the English curse words lol, especially when translated to my language, a**hole for example! :grin:

What do you mean reading alone? If you're studying a language by your own? I think that everything you study and understand is not lost, the brain keeps that information. You just have to use it often so that the information is easily accessible.

I learned English as a kid, but I recall a time that I was finding it difficult, but that was probably kid's stuff. Today I think it's one of the easiest languages to learn because it has a really simple structure.

I'd go for Chinese/Japanese due to the Chinese characters, but Arabic must be something really hard as well, writing those "things" from right to left really must mess with one's brain accustomed to write from left to right... :nerd:

You want a letter in English right? I could share some Portuguese ones, but I suppose that wouldn't do much sense here unless you're using google chrome and you can translate it. We might have a spontaneous application letter, that is more free, and the traditional ones that are applying for a job, in this last case it's a more formal one, mainly answering to what is requested.

My language goals for 2014 are mainly try to keep my English and Spanish alive and if possible practice some Russian and German, but these last two will be hard because I don't have many connections at the moment with people that speak it.

Good question, I think English was introduced when I was 6 or 7 years old and French 3 years later. I think the sooner, the better, kids really pick up things much easier than us adults.

English and French I learned at school with my colleagues, all my other languages I learned at home alone, except for Russian that I went to a school as well and I studied with a private teacher.

Shouldn't you have put the sentence in English? I'm not the sort of person that enjoys to go out at night and drink in the bar. If I knew what I know now I probably would have had my kids later so that I could travel more.

What is quizlet lola? I'd say you could browse the net because you can find loads of valid material there and when you master that you can move to something with more structure.

I agree that training is necessary, but you can also come to a country with no knowledge what-so-ever and you will pick the language up, especially if you have two. I have met two friends from Moldavia that learned Portuguese on the streets...
