  1. I get offended by this. Because I make a living speaking and writing and basically communicating in English. I don't want to debate with them but I really hope they are open minded enough before even saying such a thing.
  2. Thanks for this. This forum has completely encouraged me to be a linguist! Seriously, I never thought I'd rekindle this passion for learning new language again until I signed up here!
  3. I think it's going to take longer for my type if I learn a new language in a class room type setting with other students. I think it's best if the teacher is just focused on me. Otherwise I will be confused and it's going to be hard for me to absorb everything.
  4. I think that they are the best! Because if you don't know the answer, you can always guess. I don't like the essay form of exam. I like the multiple choice.
  5. If it's my first time learning the language, I would say it would be hard to read and write with it. Because speaking could be easy. You can just always listen to people and imitate. But definitely hard to write and read with it.
  6. It's kinda cool to have you noticed that. I wish I could speak more than two languages fluently! Your observation is pretty tight!
  7. It is in a way. Because it is kind of a skill to absorb languages that are not your native tongue. This isn't a basis of intelligence though.
  8. This is pretty hilarious!! OMG! This totally made my day! Thanks for posting this! hahaha :amazed:
  9. Oh yes. I was on a dinner with some Japanese clients of ours when I was still working in the corporate world and I totally couldn't understand a word they were saying. So all I did was nod. Which apparently, means a lot to them. LOL But still it was embarrassing.
  10. It's highly important. I don't appreciate people who are mean about it though. Like some would expect that you will talk like a native speaker of a second language when you dont have to! That's kinda frustrating.
  11. Contrary to popular belief, native speakers are actually not conscious about their grammar. Ask any Americans about it. Not even their spelling!
  12. To be super fluent in speaking like a language, I think it could take 5 years. But it still depends on the person if he or she is quick to learn. I think, I can learn to speak Italian fluently in five years like sounding like a local there. But that's just me.
  13. I would like to learn how to speak Hebrew right now. I don't know because for some reason, it does sound cool. Hopefully, I will get to learn this fast.
  14. I fall for this everytime. And sometimes I end up really reading non-sense. I have to say, those writers are awesome to catch my attention!
  15. RIgth now, I'm so going back to loving Shakespeare again. I don't know but he has rekindled my passion for writing. I love all his works especially Romeo and Juliet.
  16. I think I will consider myself a fast reader because I can finish a novel in one seating! Especially if the story is really good. I really love to read.
  17. Yes i catch myself sometimes catching mistakes on TV. Especially on sitcoms. Like the use of pronouns sometimes is so messed up!
  18. I have always love William Shakespeare. So I love these quotes, "If music be the food of life, play on." And another personal favorite of mine, "The sun itself sees not till heaven clears." Definitely he was a deep person.
  19. I reserve 30 minutes a day if I really want to study a language. Then I find friends who speak it and communicate with them to practice. I also watch a lot of shows where that language is being used. Those help a lot.
  20. I actually dont encourage it for anyone to do. It's not good practice. It's still best if you say things in the correct spelling.
  21. I love playing Boggle and Crossword. These helps me with my English a lot. So far, English is the only language I play with when it comes to these kinds of games.
  22. Depends on the language of the country. I think it would take me years to really learn Mandarin. For some language though like German, I think I would give myself a month or two.
  23. I think we're all guilty of this. I do this too sometimes. Especially when I'm pissed at the person. Haha It's mean sometimes but it helps rather than totally directly hurting other people's feelings. LOL
  24. Actions speak louder than words so body language is definitely effective. It has been a form of communication ever since though. When I am in a foreign country, I use a lot of body language to communicate if they can't speak english.
  25. Not all introverts need to be forced to learn languages. Actually, the silent types could be the geniuses for all we know. I guess it will just take time but I doubt that they will have a hard time learning a new language. Just my opinion though.
