  1. The older I get the more insensitive I become, even my dad calls me stupid and I am not affected anymore. But I guess if you are a sensitive person then you might be affected no matter how many times you have heard it. I agree that calling someone stupid is not cool at all, and if it affected you then call him stupid right back and see how he will react. If he gets offended, then you can say that you just gave him a dose of his own medicine. If he's unaffected, well, no wonder he casually says stuff like that to other people.
  2. In Tagalog, it goes like this: "Hindi ko malubos maisip kung ano ang magiging buhay ko pag wala ka."
  3. For me, I would want my 5 languages to be: 1) Tagalog (native) 2) English (2nd main language) 3) Spanish 4) German 5) Japanese
  4. I just use various online resources like websites and blogs to improve my German and Spanish. I watch anime as well, so my Japanese word knowledge is being expanded because I watch subtitles.
  5. Here in the Philippines, English is widely spoken, and majority of the people in here can speak and understand English. Almost everyone can speak the language with varying levels of fluency. English media is also a huge part of our culture. Our radio stations mostly play English songs and our tv networks mostly air English programs.
  6. I am also surprised to read that. So you don't have a job right now but you are studying a bunch of languages at the same time, am I getting it right? How many? And were you able to be fluent in any of them? If all you do is study languages day in and day out then you really must be addicted to it!
  7. That is so true, I also live in the same country, and I know that curriculum that you are talking about. I'm actually quite grateful that English is a mandatory subject here in the Philippines, because we Filipinos can now just easily speak and understand the English language as compared to other nationalities. Also, tourists can approach anyone and chances are they will be understood because most Filipinos speak English. So I hope that the schools from other countries also implement English into their curriculum.
  8. I think being able to access our notes without the PC is important, so I would prefer to have my notes handwritten. If it's handwritten then we can just carry around the notebook with us and study it, as compared to still needing a gadget and electricity to be able to access it. At least with handwritten notes, then for sure you won't lose them when the PC won't boot or something.
  9. I intend to study more regarding my selected languages like German and Spanish. I have been quite busy these days, so I haven't placed much time on studying new languages.
  10. I do not live in the US, but I'm sure that those who do will definitely grab the opportunity to avail of this offer. Aside from that, I think a simple thank you card would be enough to warm their heart.
  11. For me, anything that has symbols in it like Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, Russian, etc. those are the languages that won't appeal to me. It's hard enough to know and study a language in plain ABC, but when it comes to those languages, you have to memorize the symbol's meaning too and you have to learn how to draw them correctly. I think that is out of my league already.
  12. I only developed an interest in learning other languages when I first heard the German band Rammstein on the radio. I instantly liked their songs, so I tried to google what the title of their songs meant. Now I google the words of their songs bit by bit or phrase by phrase to know what they are saying in their songs.
  13. I think the British people just really pronounce things differently, that's why there is a language called "British English", it really has it's own nuances. Like they say "whilst" instead of "while". Here is a link that is related to the topic: http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2012/10/why-do-the-british-pronounce-z-as-zed/
  14. I don't have friends who are native English speakers, but that's not really a must in our country, because everyone speaks and understands English anyway, so if you have difficulty learning the language, then you can ask other more fluent compatriots to teach you how to speak it fluently.
  15. This site lists down some resources for French ebooks, I hope you will like some of the content there: http://www.getfreeebooks.com/?p=10445
  16. I choose to study German, because when I first listened to the song "Du Haust" from Rammstein, I instantly liked it, and since I tend to sing along to it, I figured it would be nice to learn the language too. So far, I have already learned a few German words just by listening to Rammstein, since I tend to look up their meanings online.
  17. I will try this out when I have the time. I don't browse webpages that much on my phone because it loads slow so I don't download much apps. I'm looking for someone who can translate the lyrics of a Japanese theme song that I like, so I hope I can find one there.
  18. The medical idioms that I mostly encounter are: "alive and kicking" - it means that you are well and healthy "clean bill of health" - it means that a report or certificate of a person or animal is healthy "in the pink of health" - it means that you are in good mental and physical condition
  19. I haven't heard of that method before, how is it done? I assume you get a good grasp of the word through constant repetition?
  20. I haven't tried to listen to podcasts yet, but since you reminded me of them, I have been wanting to listen to Mo Twister's podcasts for the longest time now, and I heard that they can be very controversial. So I will download them. Come to think of it, my listening skills need improving when I am not interested in a subject, since I really just tend to make it appear that I'm listening but in fact I'm not, lol.
  21. Your grammar seems fine to me. And since you are from the Philippines, we are from the same country. You can find a lot of people here who are fluent in English in no time. Don't you have friends who excel in English in school or in your office? If you are still studying, then of course the students who have high grades in English are the ones you should ask help from.
  22. I used to have a Chinese acquaintance that arrived here in the Philippines at the age of 8. I met her when she was 20 years old, and she was already fluent with our language although she doesn't understand some words that aren't normally used in everyday informal conversations. I guess when you are surrounded with people that speak Tagalog or any other language then it's much easier to absorb it. That's why I think that immersion is the best way for learning a new language aside form hiring a teacher.
  23. Maybe you can also help other forum members who have difficulty with translating Arabic to English for free? Since that would also help you get paying clients, since if they want to learn more and be thoroughly fluent then they would enroll in your course.
  24. I'm not surprised by this discovery, because monkeys are very intelligent animals. I think their language is also like our language and it's quite varied because they use many words as compared to dogs and cats that are only limited to a simple "arf" and "meow". If we humans can understand what every word meant through diligent research then it would be great.
  25. I agree, but unfortunately, I am surrounded by people who also do not speak or understand the language. I guess I should just wait to meet someone from Visayas who will cross my path in the future so that I can convese with him/her in Cebuano.
