It's amazing how much the net offers for learning a new language :amazed:. If you should use all the resources available you would find that you may not even need anyone. However, I am more comfortable studying with friends, the interaction is more therapeutic for me so I grasp more .

Some of the most effective ways that I have learnt Spanish is by using flash cards, the Spanish dictionary and watching movies with the translations running beneath .

I think English speaking people just like the accent from certain phrase in other languages or they are just around people that use these terms all the time so they use them as well. One that I always use is "gesundheit".
-
I have seen what happens to people when they allow problems to overwhelm them so inspite of my circumstances I always try to remain focused on the task ahead. Studying or just reading is a way for me to take my mind off whatever it may be for a while . Going for a jog or a walk is also a good way too.

I use English slang but very minimal. It's weird to be communicating with someone who is using it and you are not. So it's not that I like it, i'm just being natural.

I can understand if a non-native uses the thesaurus for help with words and ends up using a word that natives wouldn't normally use. Afterall it's what they know. I prefer to use words that are simple and straight to the point so if a native was guilty of that then it would annoy me .

How Do You Work On Your Vocabulary?
Rosa replied to Francisco23's topic in English Language | Discussion
I work on my vocabulary by writing down new words. In my spear time I usually familiarize myself with the meaning and I try to use them when I converse orally or written . -
I am very passionate about accent. I like that of Australia and England. I think I do master the English accent more though because I watch alot of their movies .
-
I believe that the best way to learn vocabulary is to write down new words as you come across them . Then use them to make new sentences and be sure to use them in your conversations .
-
I use two dictionaries when I read or write. The Oxford and Collins. It so happens that the Collins is a pocket dictionary and so it gets used more than the Oxford which I'd prefer to use .

Big words or small words - which are better?
Rosa replied to SpikeTheLobster's topic in English Vocabulary
Yes some people prefer to use big words because it makes them feel smarter, I am not one of them. I believe the words you use when you write should capture the attention of the reader. So then, who are you writing to?. That should be very much considered when choosing words. -
I think listening to music is a good way to boost learning a language . It has helped me with my pronunciations just as watching a movie does.

Globally, I would have to say English. Next it would be Spanish followed by Chinese since they have a large population and worldwide trade is increasing rapidly.

I doubt a person will forget about their native language if they move to another country, except it was at a very young age. This shouldn't happen to an adult even if in the new country there is no one to speak the native language with. I think as soon as you start hearing the language again everthing should come right back.

Your huband's family just don't understand that the earlier a child starts learning a foreign language the more easier it will be for the child to master it. I promise you, your son won't get confused, even if he was learning more than one language at the same time he would be able to seperate them, kids are like that .He will also go on to grasp English just as well .

Read out loud/ understand a text at the same time
Rosa replied to linguaholic's topic in Language Learning
I totally get what you are saying. I was very confident in school but I witnessed alot of children being nervous when reading session came around . It was quite the opposite for me though. If I tried to read in my mind I found that I had to read the same thing a couple of times before finally grasping it.Now that I am older I have actually trained myself to mind-read . -
The Wrong Way to Learn Spanish?
Rosa replied to SpringBreeze's topic in Spanish Language | Discussion
I think the wrong way to learn Spanish is by putting all focus on literature only and not doing alot of oral communication. Also, learning the vocabularies but not practicing proper sentence structure could be a setback too. -
Is Spanish Useful in Your Daily Life
Rosa replied to tulosai's topic in Spanish Language | Discussion
Well, I don't live in the US but I have been there on vacation in areas where alot of Mexicans live. On several occasions I had small children come up to me and tried to interact with me and the little Spanish that I do know did help me to respond to them. -
I think that anilmals do have a language. I'm not sure how to say this but I think it would be more of a body language type of thing or them reading each others emotions. How ever it is done I believe they do have a language otherwise how would they communicate. Just don't have a name for it.

Happy New Year to you too, Limbo . Well, my language-related goal for 2014 is to widen my vocabulary in Spanish so I can be more confident when communicating :doubtful:. I have alot of doubt and so there are times when I could use the language but remain reserved :speechless:.

People use poetry to express personal feeling or what they see around them. It can be real entertaining, as with dub poetry and even relaxing when listening to it . When I was in Primary school alot of emphasis was placed on the art of writing poetry yet many students could not master it . Poetry, in my opinion, is a gift and for that reason I do appreciate it and recognize its writers .

Does anyone do breathing exercises for better speech?
Rosa replied to True2marie's topic in Language Learning
I never knew that breathing exercises could be done to better ones speech . I have done it a few times when I have a respiratory problem and I have seen my son done it too because he sings on a choir, but this is new to me. I need to get more detail as to how it works though. -
How many languages are currently spoken in your country?
Rosa replied to Trellum's topic in Language Learning
In my country two languages are spoken, English and Jamaican Creole. However, we have 14 parishes and each parish does speak Creole in a unique way . -
The word that comes to mind just now is sleigh. There are many words that are not pronounced the way they are spelt . This is mainly because these words are not originally English words.I think this is one of the reasons why the Enhglish language is so interesting .

How well do you read body language ?
Rosa replied to rahimbahrain's topic in English Language | Discussion
Oh, i'm good at it. I read peoples emotions like a clock . For those who can't it can be very devastating for them if it was a personal encounter . I go into a business place and I just know which worker to avoid. I'll ask a friend what's wrong and the person might say they're ok but then finally admit to something.I generally check out the way the person look at me, their facial expression and how they move their shoulders. I don't know if anyone else does it that way.
