I don't view that Chinese will ever be the most spoken language in years to come. However, I know that they do take an interest in learning English . With the trade between China and other countries on the increase and Chineses setting up business in alot of English speaking countries it will become more globalized but it won't excede the English language.

Let's make up a Story...
Rosa replied to eruvande's topic in English Lounge - Conversations in English only
took him as her pet and named him Albertig. -
I can be a very bad listener or a good listener when I want to :wacky:. If the conversation is uninteresting I sometimes miss out on alot of it, otherwise I do pay full attention and is able to recall and respond :amazed:.

I consider it very unkind to prejudge people who speak with an accent . Somehow, I take an interest in listening to people of different accent speak . I must confess though that I sometimes miss a word or two but I still happen to figure out what they want to say.

Why is reading a foreign language so much harder than speaking it?
Rosa replied to True2marie's topic in Language Learning
In my opinion, having more difficulty reading a foreign language than speaking it would be more associated with children.I find it much more easier to read than to speak, maybe because in reading I don't have to be perfect in my pronunciations and I don't have to use much effort to utilize the accent of that language. -
Tongue Exercises: Do they really help you speak better?
Rosa replied to True2marie's topic in Language Learning
I do agree that tongue exercises does help you speak better.I have a friend that had a speech impediment and it was speech therapy that helped him to correct it so I think the same goes for sounding common words. -
I do see how one could get confused with both verbs . However, the best and simplest way to look at it is to think of "need" as a requirement and "must" as an order or enforcement .

Alot of people do find it hard to grasp and so make the mistake quite often .I think the best way to get a hang of it would be to remember that it's is the short form of it is and its shows ownership, then bear one in mind when you are ready to use either and that should solve the problem .

"Could care less" or "Couldn't care less"?
Rosa replied to SpiralArchitect's topic in English Grammar
I consider "could care less" to be poor grammar . I've never used it or even heard it been used but if society does accept it then I don't think it will go beyond informal. -
I prefer simple writing that gives you a quick understanding of what the writer wants to bring across . However, if someone whose native language isn't English wishes to use a word from the thesaurus to express what they want to say then that's what the person knows best and so I don't think of it as bad.

When You've been following the gramma rules for a while it does'nt take much effort to do the right thing . Capitalization is necessary for a number of reasons. Firstly, for nouns such as names and places. It also lets you know when a new sentence has began. If you are corresponding informally then that might be alright but it is certainly needed for formal corresponding.

Best way to memorize words fast and effectively
Rosa replied to Dieselfit's topic in English Vocabulary
When I come upon a new word, the first thing that I try to do is to familiarize myself with its meaning. Then practice it in writing and oral communication . -
I've thought of words like serene(calm) and eloquent(able to speak with grace). They are just as beautiful as their meanings .
-
I learnt these words in my primary years and have'nt had any problem with them since. Once you are able to differenciate the meaning of there and their and know that they're is used in the short form you should be fine ..

Which English words do you have trouble spelling?
Rosa replied to a topic in English Language | Discussion
I wouldn't say I have trouble spelling them but there are a few words that I have had to focus on just to make sure I have spelt correctly.Words like, development and maintenance because the spelling does change as the figure of speech changes. -
I happen to text in a formal way. I don't practice shortcut texting so I sometimes even have difficulty reading it . I guess people who do must be very much short on time or it just doesn't matter to them.

What does Literature mean to you?
Rosa replied to pandandesign's topic in English Language | Discussion
I love Literature . To me literature is a written work of art, done in such a style that only after careful analysis do you realize the real meaning of the story . At the end you have learnt something and feel gratified . -
The correct use of "loose" and "lose"
Rosa replied to sidney's topic in English Language | Discussion
Such errors are bound to happen on the web because people communicate with speed and don't stop to review.Anyway, if you know your gramma, I don't see how a mistake could be made with these two words that have entirely different meanings . Guess I'd have to say those that do, don't know any better . -
Do you care what others think about the way you talk?
Rosa replied to rossonomous's topic in English Language | Discussion
Though I might feel a little uncomfortable if someone criticize how I talk in a negative way, I don't let it bother me. If my point is very well understood then that is all that really matters . I don't believe that I should have to change my speech to blend in, otherwise I'd be doing so everytime I find myself in a new setting . -
Do you anticipate English becoming the world's language?
Rosa replied to sayitwell's topic in English Language | Discussion
It would be great to have English becoming the world's language .We would be better able to communicate with each nation. However, I am not anticipating it any time soon. It would take alot of planning and resource which I know many countries couldn't afford. -
Two that comes to mind just now are, necessity is the mother of invention and he who fights and run away will live to fight another day.
-
I've never really heard anyone say English was much harder to learn than French and Spanish. I'm very sorry to hear that you found it complicated . Somehow I think that if emphasis is placed on what is puzzling to an individual, like phonics and gramma, then it becomes less complicated .
