  1. Practicing language makes one more effective in communication. Presently , I practice language by reading and trying to translate books using a dictionary . My greatest accomplishment comes from communicating with my daughter who is more advanced than I am .
  2. Language has been changing constantly over the years. I do believe that the change will continue into the future. With the present globalization I believe that languages may either merge or new ones emerge to facilitate better communication in trade and travel.
  3. No, I am not part of a language club and have never been. It does sound like a great way to meet and share with others. It would be a wonderful experience to be a part of a language club especially if all the members need help communicating different language .
  4. I use my first language more often than my second language. I live in my native land among people that speak the same language so I get to speak it all the time. I only speak my second language around a few friends and family but not as often as I would want to.
  5. I think that both doing language classes and living in a foreign country has their part in learning a foreign language. When learning a foreign language it is best to start off with classes so that the basics of the language can be understood. However, in terms of mastering the language, it would be best to live in that country where you get to speak with natives and understand it's culture more.
  6. For me, I learn a new language because I started it in high school and fell in love with it. I don't have a lot of people to communicate with except my daughter and past school friends. However, it has helped me a lot in my travel abroad. I think that it is the same for many people, they simply fell in love with the language and learned it because they thought it could be beneficial in their travel and or communication.
  7. It is difficult to say whether women learn language faster than men. I believe it has to do very much with the individuals willingness to learn as with anything else. In my opinion women usually grasp at things more quickly but I don't think learning a language has much if anything to do with gender.
  8. Learning a language is quite different for each individual. The person has to have a mind set and determination and not necessarily intelligence. I think a person could lack intellect and yet speaks several languages because that person has grown up around others that speak these languages. In another case, someone may be quite intelligent and is put in a position where they need to learn a new language but is not desirous so that person actually struggles to excel.
  9. When I speak my second language I wouldn't say that I feel like a different person but it does let me feel a little more complete. To be speaking a language that I've always liked to hear someone fluent in it speak is a great accomplishment for me and it makes me feel great.
  10. The thought of being dumb is actually an eye opener for me to stop and reflect on how blessed I am. Not sure what i'd do if this does happen but I wouldn't hesitate to learn sign language. Maybe i'd have to do a lot of gesturing and writing at first but in the end i wouldn't let being dumb keep me from communicating.
  11. Learning a new language is definitely a hobby for me. When I just started out in high school I was so motivated to learn, I thought I would be a translator by now. However, as time went by I struggled to find time to study. I have taken it up back again but only after getting jealous seeing my daughter doing much better at it than I am. Now a days we both work together at mastering it and I have a lot of fun doing it.
  12. When learning a new language it is best to incorporate all the methods of learning in order to be successful. Focusing on one method would also take more time to learn the language. However, I think that if you do not want to go through the formalities of learning the language it would be best to have oral communication with natives of that language on a regular basis or live among them.
  13. Learning a new language is never an easy journey. I too get frustrated when studying Spanish. My frustration came from trying to roll the r and forgetting a word or two when making sentences. When I got over that everything was smooth sailing.
  14. I enjoy reading poems but not of any particular writer. My favorite poems are local poetry, known as dub poetry and dialect, most of which are written in my native tongue. dub poetry has a lyrical sway to it and the dialects are mostly written about the way things were in years gone by but in a funny way. Examples of dub poetry can be found at www.Mutabaruka.com and example of dialects are those written by Louise Bennett Coverley and Joan Andrea Hutchinson.
  15. I think it is a good idea to teach your toddlers a second language if you speak that language also. Small children are fast learners when it comes to learning language because they haven't yet possessed their own so it will be necessary to know that language as you'll only get lost as the child's learning progress.
  16. In my opinion, ones mother tongue will always be easier than their second language, unless maybe they are away from speaking it for a very long time. It is much easier for me with my mother tongue than with my second language. I am encircled by people who speak it just as fluent as I can so I do not baffle at any time. It is quite the opposite with Spanish because I don't have a lot of people to communicate with so I don't speak it that often.
  17. I too get a little frustrated at the speed of which a native sometimes speak. I also have trouble with accent sometimes too. In high school,I would do terrible at listening to the audios in order to translate but surprisingly I did very well with the writing exercises.
  18. It can be quite a funny experience knowing a second language and communicating with others of same tongue yet the majority of people around you are unable to understand. My friend once told me that she was travelling on the subway when a group of girls decided to have a ball about her in Spanish. She totally ignored them until she got to her stop, she let them have in Spanish. They were astonished to find out she was quite fluent in Spanish and understood every word they spoke. As a matter of fact she is a Spanish teacher so we shouldn't judge the book by it's cover if we ever think of having fun in such a way.
  19. Body language plays a big part in how we communicate. Our gestures and facial expressions sometimes says more than our spoken language. I sometimes find myself being over-expressive in my body language in order to get someone to understand what I really want to say. I think that without it some people would vaguely be understood.
  20. One of my favorite English quotes and one that I have been using lately is "He who fights and run away will live to fight another day." With the heart of mankind growing desperately wicked , I find that I often have to be steering a lot of young people into the path of peace and I often use this quote.
  21. We write poetry to express what we feel, think or experience. I do believe that one is allowed to break grammar rules in order to be expressive. There doesn't have to be any formality in that. It is just the same as with songs, you tell it as it is then it is for the reader or listener to analyse.
  22. Hi Josh, welcome to Linguaholic. This may be just what you need to motivate you to study language again. The community has several people like yourself that are eager to learn. Hope you will like it here and your journey will be a fulfilling one .
  23. I cannot agree to the statement that English sentences are structured the other way round. I have been studying Spanish and French and with those languages the adjective does not proceed the noun. This does not mean that English is the language that is backward. As the first person that responded to the thread mentioned, it wouldn't make full sense placing the sentence the other way round.
  24. I have never tried Rosetta Stone but I do have a coach. My coach happens to be my daughter . She is more fluent than I am in Spanish so whenever I am having difficulties she is usually the one that I turn to.
  25. I totally believe every word in the bible. God was from the beginning of time and the word was God. If you don't have a spiritual enlightenment then you can't understand the mystery of Godliness and therefore won't accept everything in the bible. With that being said, the people tried to build a tower that would reach the heavens but God was disapproved of it and so he confounded their language. They had to stop building because they could not understand each other.
