  1. I believe both ways of studying English or other languages is the best. Studying it in class and again studying it at home. The more you study, speak and think about what you are learning, the better the results would be. Utilizing all the tools to learn a language is the best way to approach it and you can do it wherever you are and whenever you want to.
  2. Google translate is only good for translating words. If you input sentences, it would be hilarious to read since the grammar, context and the meaning of the words are all jumbled-up. A computer cannot process grammar, context and the correct meaning of words that is why we have problems like this. In order for you to translate what you want you must enter it word per word which is really futile and tiring since we do not have the luxury of time for those.
  3. I don't think you could put a time table for which one would have a high proficiency in speaking a language. It actually depends on the willingness and the capacity of a person to learn the language and to put it in to practice by speaking and writing. Some people may even become proficient within 4 years or less specially when they are very interested in the language they are trying to learn and have been practicing it everyday since.
  4. I'm not currently part of a language club but I intend in joining one as soon as I find one. Language clubs are not very popular in our country as our clubs focus more on the typical extracurricular activities like dancing, singing, writing and debate.
  5. It's actually a form of intelligence. Being a linguist and having a variety of languages in your memory is actually a form of intelligence that some people do not have. IQ is no longer the intelligence determinant at least this was taught to us in our psychology subjects.
  6. Our Filipino Alphabet and the English Alphabet is actually very similar except (enye) ~N and (enji) Ng, which are additional alphabets in the Filipino Alphabet. Since A-Z is also inculcated, it's very easy to remember.
  7. Yes. English is a very beautiful language especially in poetry, speeches and even debate. I admire the intonation and phonetics of the English language. Most people who speak English very fluently are also admirable and makes them even more attractive than those who can't speak a language fluently.
  8. Finding people to talk and listen to is a really good thing to practice the language you are trying to learn. They can also give you tips on the intonation, phonetics and the like. Native speakers are usually the best people you could learn the language from.
  9. Some people learn a language for Employment or Business related matters or what we call money matters. Some people learn a language for their own interests or just for the fun of it. Most people learn a language because they are forced to or are taught to at an early age.
  10. It depends upon the person. Koreans in our place never even tried to learn our Language although there are some and they are very exceptional. Most foreigners do not learn our language even with the lapse of 10-20 years which is sad. It is really dependent upon the eagerness of a person to learn that particular language that counts.
  11. I beg to disagree. I believe the capacity of a person is the determinant factor in learning languages faster and not the sex of the person. I think the higher the IQ and the better the memory, the faster you will learn the Language regardless of sex/gender.
  12. I use any of the Languages I know depending on the person I am speaking to. If the person I'm speaking to uses English, I also use English specially when he or she doesn't understand Ilocano or Tagalog. For native speakers as much as possible, I use the Language that they are speaking.
  13. I'm a Filipino, I'm comfortable speaking my native language, writing not so much. I'm not that good at it, I know it's embarrassing but I guess I have to blame the colonial mentality that was fed to us at an early age. Always pertaining to foreign things as better and who can blame us the government is corrupt and only the families of these politicians are benefiting from the money that's supposed to be for the masses.
  14. Old wives tales which means to gossiping or made up stories. Yea, Neigh, Aye and other old English terms are not commonly used nowadays except for when you're reading it from the King James Version of the Bible.
  15. It's always a mix. Most of the time for English questions asked of me, I think in English. But when they are asking me in Tagalog, Ilocano definitely I use my native Language unless I can't think of a term in my native Language then I use English.
  16. Yes. I've experienced what you are talking about, I have this feeling like I'm not used to it or it's like someone else is speaking when I use a different or foreign language. But for English, I have grown accustomed to it and have been fluent in speaking English.
  17. Using all the techniques including watching videos and listening to music and audio tapes can really help you in learning the language you choose. Most of us employ the basic tools for learning which is reading, talking and writing which is a very common yet effective way to learn a language.
  18. Body Language, Writing and using electronics to convey your message is very much possible and is easily understandable. Here in the 21st century, even mute people can talk with gadgets and the use of high-tech electronics. So I wouldn't worry about it.
  19. Thank you for this information. Now that I think of it, is does make sense. Perhaps all of those times I lose my momentum and can't recall what I'm about to say is because of this state or the short term memory mix.
  20. I also use full sentences and correct spelling whenever I text my friends or families but in rare cases do I use shortcuts as this would inhibit and can cause mistakes in handling the Language in the long run. People who get used to text and shortcuts would eventually become dumb.
  21. I can adapt easily and be able to pick up the language instantaneously. About a month or a few months , I believe I can understand a few of the words that people would be talking about. Specially when I ask questions such as "what does that mean?", I would remember it easily.
  22. Chatting and texting shortcut messages should only be used in emergency situations. Yes. It's really annoying to find some people who actually use this as their general form of communication which makes you believe that they are not really educated.
  23. I usually study for a short time and with the maximum length for a day if not for a week. And along with it comes rushing and cramming all the ideas and the words that I should remember and understand. When the feeling of studying hits me, I should continue it so that I can learn a lot.
  24. I really haven't noticed much of the mistakes that television guys and hostess commit. I rather tend to the important message or the news being delivered. Yes. Everyone makes mistakes and especially for those who are in the media business, what they say can impact a lot of hearers.
  25. I tried this many times while playing video games. I actually say bad words in my own tongue and most of the people cannot understand it anyway so there I go. It's also fun to use your own language when foreigners are in, so that they wont understand what you are talking about.
