Sign language is not very difficult to learn, for alphabets. But the words themselves are a bit more difficult to learn and you should ask instructors of LD's or Learning with Difficulties/ Special Children to teach you. We had a few schoolmates who were mute and deaf and they were teaching us how to do sign language before, I should have paid more attention to them when I had the chance.

Most Popular Words That Aren't Words.
fredkawig replied to Emmanuel's topic in English Language | Discussion
That's what language is all about, words that aren't used correctly when used by a lot of people constantly will make that word part of language. There are a lot of words out there some are abbreviations and slang such as gonna, won'cha and other words that are frequently heard in the music industry, but some people are already considering it okay as compared to others. -
Words that express agreements such as : yes, you may, okay, yup, and the like. Whenever I hear words that agree with me whether I'm asking something like a favor or asking for permission to go to the bathroom when at school, I find delight hearing these words. There are some people though who are very rude and comment something like, I can't do anything when you go to the bathroom and stuff like that, they should just say yes, or go.

What is the hardest part of learning English?
fredkawig replied to True2marie's topic in English Language | Discussion
Since we studied the English language starting on our elementary days, for me, I guess the hardest part in learning English are the subject verb agreements, tenses, and punctuations. I find vocabulary a tad bit easier when you understand the basics of the English language. The usage of words also goes hand in hand with vocabulary and you can always visit the dictionary for help which is very convenient nowadays specially since we have it online. -
Exams are given to check the ability of students to read and understand statements for a period of time. Reading comprehension generally means the ability of an individual to read and understand the statements provided for. There are some people who have the ability to zoom through the text and give an answer to the choices provided for quickly and there are some who take time reading and understanding the situation given to the. How about you how do you think you compare to the general populace?

It really depends on the language and if it has dialects or similar languages which can be learned simultaneously. If the language you are learning has synonymous languages which can be picked up easily then go ahead and learn them at the same time. The problem is when there are 2 different and no-similar languages which can actually confuse you because of different writing styles, grammar, and words used so I guess you better stick with one language for that matter.

Yes. We had a lot of foreign exchange students and foreigners who study here in the Philippines, I helped a lot of Koreans and other Foreigners who don't understand our Native language so I had to translate it to English. I had one Chinese Friend where she was having difficulty also in English so I tried to explain to her what it means by ways of gestures and writing. I'm very blessed to have a very good grasp with the English language and it really is for a purpose.

In our country some people are have a colonial mentality mindset wherein they think that other's culture, products, language is better than theirs. It's a xenocentric view of culture where they pick foreign culture rather than their own native one. Although for me I still find Filipino equal with the English language because it is our national language. I love my fellow Filipinos but I don't like how they treat each other which is again in tuned with the Crab Mentality mindset wherein they try to pull their fellow Filipino's down. These are the mindset which are awful and we've picked them up from other cultures.

Do books/tv shows inspire you to learn new languages?
fredkawig replied to kate23's topic in Language Learning
TV Shows and Movies actually inspire me a lot to learn new languages. When I saw the Horror movie, The Eye which was acted out by Jessica Alba and the Disney movie Ratatouie, the French language sounded very good to me and inspired me to want to learn French, right now though I only know few words which include Hello's and Goodbye's and maybe if I have free time after graduation I would take time to learn French since it is a very interesting and sounding language. -
Yes. Actually the 3 are native languages and one of them is my national language which is Filipino. So I know 4 languages Primarily; English, Tagalog, Ilocano and Ifontok. Since Philippines is an archipelago composed of 7107 Islands, we have a lot of languages brought to us by our Conquerors including the Spaniards, Americans, Japanese and those who did trade with us including the Chinese, Malay, Indo and other people and even our Native settlers the Aetas. So there you have a culturally rich and diverse nation which is the Philippines.

What is the most useful language for where you live?
fredkawig replied to kate23's topic in Language Learning
I live in Baguio. Actually our place is a special case, almost all languages in our area are important because Baguio is a culturally diversified place where everyone including foreigners and people all over the Philippines come to. English is the primary language that most people in our place speak. Next of course is either Filipino or Ilocano. These three languages are the most important ones that one must understand and speak in order to survive and thrive in Baguio City. It is also called the summer capital of the Philippines where tourists flock in to see the Flower Festival and the Cold climate. -
How much did it take for you to learn a new language?
fredkawig replied to Mafdet's topic in Language Learning
It took me years to master and comprehend with a deep understanding English and since it is inculcated in our educational system, it is much easier to learn. -
I've been learning the English language through cartoons and other television programs by the U.S. so I definitely agree, you can pick up a lot by listening and watching shows that are in the language of the one you are trying to learn.

Associating similar words? How is it done, through the use of similar terms to learn a language? I think that could help specially if you know a few words with the same or similar meaning in order for you to expand your vocabulary.

Dead languages // Is the study of 'dead' languages useful or not?
fredkawig replied to Mafdet's topic in Language Learning
Our constitution consists of some Latin and Spanish terms which we still learn, I don't think they are useful besides showing off that you know terms which are foreign which is not really that much help. -
The pro's to this attempt would be, easier job access from one place to the other. The con's would be we would be creating a tower of babel once again since people would be too ambiguous to see that they are overtaken by pride.

Words that you would love to make your names
fredkawig replied to Eudora13's topic in English Vocabulary
I agree, there are a lot of good English words out there that can be used as names. Either because of the complication or the quality that one represents. -
Insults? Stupid, dumb, moron, ignorant, fool. These are the insults that are thrown at in our country but in Tagalog of course.

Cancelled is the correct spelling as far as I know. I have never heard or seen canceled as a variant. But there seems to be a variant between the US and the UK. That figures.

Ever try reading and choose your own adventure story?
fredkawig replied to CeliVega's topic in English Literature
Oh. I thought you were talking about books that have a choose your adventure type of genre. I read a book once of the Goosebumps series where they let you choose your adventure and it was really fun and scary at the same time. -
Grammar is everything to me. Sentence construction, grammar and vocabulary are one of the most important aspects of the English language, It is the basis and the foundations of the English language and you must pay attention to grammar and sentence construction always.
-
Exactly when do you use past tense and present tense in story?
fredkawig replied to CeliVega's topic in English Grammar
That depends upon you, when you are describing yourself or something which is already done and cannot be repeated use the past tense, but If you are currently doing and are about to do those that you are describing write present tense. -
I agree with this.
