  1. Information obtained from the internet deserves further investigation to establish its credibility. Sometimes the information available may not be up to date. Besides, some information available online may have been written by a writer for hire. Getting information from the horse’s mouth is usually the way to go. Always find out the source of the information before using it.
  2. I did not know about this website, I will make sure to check it out. I enjoy reading a good book every now and then. Thanks for sharing this information. It is my dream to write stories for children; therefore I am learning everything I can about books. I have made a quick stop at the website and it looks very promising. I have even seen that one of my classmates in my Facebook contact list uses the website.
  3. I think that any kind of education is never wasted. It does not matter whether it is used in real life or not. The purpose of education according to me is increasing the thinking capacity of the learner. A degree in English literature is perfect for an artist who will have an added advantage over others who have not mastered the language.
  4. You have asked a good question there. There are so many things in life that do not have an explanation. People create a language and develop it as they go along. Maybe the person who came up with the word salmon decided that they did not like how it sounded pronounced with an L. Maybe they would keep correcting their friends when they pronounced the L until they got it right. Just saying!
  5. The ***** is supposed to mask what a reader of the content considers a swear word. There is a saying that “one man’s meat is another man’s poison”. What you may consider a regular word could be a swear word to another. We are all brought up in very differently environments; for that reason it is so difficult to relate with majority of people. If they say that it is a swear word, just go with the flow.
  6. I have a friend who is very particular in correcting other people when they make the slightest mistake. The way she does it annoys a lot of people. If I notice a grammar mistake, I ask the person to explain what they mean so that I can bring it to their attention. A number of people will not get offended when you correct them if you soften your voice.
  7. I used to be sleepless before an exam when I was much younger; I would even get a running stomach due to all the anxiety. I remember asking my late grandfather what I should do when the paper was in front of me. He told to take a deep breath and ask God to guide me as I went through the questions. I was the top girl in my district when I used his advice for the first time, you can borrow it if you want to.
  8. Thank you for providing these examples of sentences that involve being bored. I have never understood what being bored is all about because there is always something to do. I think I should add another sentence to your collection. “He was so bored because he did not want to do anything” forgive me but I think that being bored is a choice we make. I am bored so I am going to bed and the list continues.
  9. To listen attentively, you may need to get rid of any distractions. Make sure that you listen at a place where you will not get drawn into what is going on around you. You can close your eyes if you are in a public bus so that all your focus is on the audio book. My best place to listen to an audio book is at home where one can control the environment.
  10. I also have a similar problem especially if I am pronouncing words that are used together if they contain L and R. Example of a sentence, “ The land Rates have been increased” Being self conscious makes it easier to make a pronunciation mistake. I think the best way to improve diction is to read extensively and pronounce the words out loud as you read. It works for me.
  11. I also try to use correct grammar when I text. Sometimes, I use a shortcut for commonly used words, example “u” instead of “you”. I have a friend who uses so many shortcuts that on most occasions I call her to understand some of her texts. It is a nightmare chatting with her. Most people are in such a hurry today, that they damage a beautiful language.
  12. Yes I think that it is necessary to learn even the bad words so that we can avoid using them. Sometime back I knew someone very cunning who would tell people the wrong meaning of words. They would laugh out loud when their victims used those words trying to impress others. Knowledge is power no matter the subject.
  13. I have noticed that it is so much easier to make grammatical mistakes when someone is upset. The most common one that I have found is using her instead of him and vice versa when referring to the opposite sex. I just correct it in mind as I read the content. Their and there are also commonly mistaken by a number of people.
  14. I have tried to remember all the books I read as a child; I remember the stories instead that made an impact. The princess and the frog was my favorite followed by sleeping beauty. I will never forget how much I was affected by the story of Oliver Twist. I still enjoy reading stories for children. It is my dream to write for children someday.
  15. I started learning French when I was in college ( in my twenties). A language was required in the course that I was taking at the time. I was not able to grasp the language after six months; therefore I enrolled in another language school. I am yet to get good at the language. I started learning english when I was ten years old.
  16. There must be so many languages in the world that I would not be surprised if the number is not documented. People also create their own language as they go along to be able to relate. Languages keep evolving and therefore it is a bit difficult to keep track of the number available.
  17. I think that English is the most valuable language as it is used by so many people. It is our official language. Besides, being able to speak and write fluent English is very marketable in my region. That said, it is always an added advantage to learn a new language.
  18. No, I have not fallen in love with someone who speaks a different language. I however have friends whose native language is foreign to me. They help me learn the most common terms used and we usually have fun doing that. We speak in English when we interact.
  19. Yes, I think that it is for the future benefits of our children if foreign languages are introduced in primary schools. Kids are able to understand things better because they do not have too many responsibilities. My seven year old niece is learning French in school, I find it so remarkable when she pronounces the words impeccably.
  20. I think that French is the hardest language for me to learn. I have tried to learn it three times and I have not yet grasped how words work together. I love this language and I hope that I will find a good teacher one day who will assist me learn it.
  21. When I take a course, I make sure to review my work every day so that I understand it. I revise extensively for an exam and yes I also get nervous. When the exam is in front of me, I remind myself that I have done the best to prepare for it. I ask God to help me as I go through the questions. I have done very well in most of the exams I have taken over the years.
  22. I have never used a tutorial to learn a language. However, I have used tutorials to learn how to cook something, how to update my computer, how to get rid of a problem in the household and many others. It is true; I have gotten lots of help from tutorials. That said it is always good to know how to handle information obtained online.
  23. I would also like to hear the answer to this question because I would be very happy to put it into practice. Learning while sleeping can be a dream come true if it were possible. I will check back later on this thread to find out if someone has shared more about this.
  24. I would like to learn a new language for all the reasons you have listed above. It would also be a great honor to learn a new language to add another achievement on my portfolio. Even if I do not get to use the language every day, it would be an honor to stumble upon someone who speaks that language. Maybe I would help them by being their translator if they need one.
  25. I do not carry a dictionary; I use Microsoft word to type my work. If there is a word I do not understand, I check the synonym by right clicking when the cursor is on the word. I can also look up the word at the comfort of the same page through the same process. Life has become so convenient with the advancement of technology.
