What is the Anagram Game?

An anagram is a word made by rearranging the letters of another: listen and silent. In the Anagram Game you get six or seven letters and find every word they make, from three-letter words up to the one word that uses them all. There are 2,123 puzzles, each built from an everyday word, and the game checks every answer against our word list.

No sign-up, no account and no app: open the page and play, on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

How to play

  1. Tap the letters to spell a word, or type it on your keyboard. Press Enter to check it.
  2. Words need at least three letters, and each letter can be used once per word.
  3. Stuck? Shuffle the letters (or press the space bar): a new order often shows a new word.
  4. The chips under the letters show how many words of each length are still hidden.
  5. At the end you see the words you missed and the word that uses every letter.

Three ways to play

  • Timed: 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes on the clock, 970 six-letter and 1,153 seven-letter puzzles.
  • Relaxed: no clock, and a hint button that shows the first two letters and the length of a word you have not found.
  • Daily: one seven-letter puzzle a day, the same for everyone. Your progress is kept in your browser until midnight, so you can come back to it.

Example: every word in MUSICAL

The first puzzle on this page has the letters of musical. These are the 27 everyday words they make, worth 61 points together (the game also accepts some rarer words):

LengthWords
7 letters (1)musical
6 letters (1)claims
5 letters (6)calms, claim, clams, mails, mauls, music
4 letters (12)ails, aims, alms, calm, clam, mail, maul, sail, scum, slam, slim, slum
3 letters (7)ail, aim, cam, mas, sac, sic, sum

Tips for finding more words

  • Look for endings. If you have an S, most words also work as plurals. E and D make past tenses, E and R make “-er” words.
  • Build up. From a three-letter word, try adding one letter at a time: arm, harm, harms.
  • Move the vowels. Put the consonants in a row and try each vowel between them.
  • Shuffle often. The brain gets stuck on the order it sees; a new order shows new words.
  • Find the long word first. The word that uses every letter is worth the bonus, and its parts are often words too.

For classrooms and English learners

Anagrams are a quick spelling and vocabulary warm-up. Put the timed game on the class screen and let the class call out words, or give everyone the same letters with a challenge link and compare scores. The word list is filtered, so rude words do not count.

Anagram game or anagram solver?

This game hides the words and lets you find them. If you just want every word your own letters make, use the Anagram Solver or the Word Unscrambler.

Is it private?

Yes. The word lists load into your browser and the game checks your words there; nothing you type is sent anywhere, and there is no account. The daily progress is saved only in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play the anagram game?
You get six or seven letters. Make as many words of three letters or more as you can from them, using each letter once per word. Tap the letters or type them and press Enter. The game checks every word and shows how many words of each length are still hidden.
How are points scored?
A three-letter word scores 1 point, and every extra letter adds 1 more, so a seven-letter word scores 5. A word that uses all the letters earns a 3-point bonus.
Which words count?
Any English word of three letters or more in our word list, including plurals and verb forms. Names, abbreviations and rude words do not count. Less common words count too; they are marked as rare.
What is the daily puzzle?
Every day there is one seven-letter puzzle with the same letters for everyone. Your progress is saved in your browser, so you can come back later the same day, and you can send your score to a friend as a challenge.
Can I play without a timer?
Yes. Relaxed mode has no clock and gives hints: the first two letters and the length of a word you have not found yet.
How is this different from an anagram solver?
The solver lists every word your letters make. The game hides them and lets you find them yourself. If you want the answers for your own letters, use the Anagram Solver.
Can I challenge a friend?
Yes. At the end, send the challenge link or let your friend scan the code: they get the same letters and try to beat your points.
Do I need to sign up or download an app?
No. There is no account and nothing to install. Open the page and play, on a phone, a tablet or a computer. It is free.
