How to unscramble words
Type your letters into the box — from a word game rack, a jumbled puzzle, or just a random mix — and the word unscrambler instantly lists every word you can make, longest first. It searches about 184,000 English words, including plurals and verb forms like “tables” and “jumped”, so it works for word games as well as everyday puzzles.
- Enter up to 15 letters. Add ? or * for each blank tile.
- Narrow the list with starts with, ends with, contains, or an exact length — handy when a word has to fit a board or a crossword gap.
- Sort by length, by points, or A–Z, and tap any word for a short definition.
Anagram solver
An anagram uses all the same letters in a new order: listen → silent, heart → earth. When a word can be made from all of your letters, the unscrambler shows it right at the top as an anagram. Here are some common words with three or more anagrams:
| Letters | Anagrams |
|---|---|
| opst | opts, post, pots, spot, stop, tops |
| arst | arts, rats, star, tars, tsar |
| aemn | amen, mane, mean, name |
| aers | ares, ears, eras, sear |
| bstu | bust, buts, stub, tubs |
| deit | diet, edit, tide, tied |

Blank tiles and wildcards
Many word games have blank tiles that can stand for any letter. Type a ? (or *) for each one — “TRAIN?” finds trains, strain, attain and more. Letters filled by a blank score zero points, just like on a real board.
Word game letter points
The point next to each word uses the classic tile values found in popular crossword-style board games:
| Points | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R |
| 2 | D, G |
| 3 | B, C, M, P |
| 4 | F, H, V, W, Y |
| 5 | K |
| 8 | J, X |
| 10 | Q, Z |
Board bonuses (double and triple letter or word squares) aren’t included, since they depend on where you place the word.
Tips for finding better words
- Look for common endings like -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, and -S: filter by “ends with” to see them all at once.
- High-value letters (J, Q, X, Z) are worth building around — sort by points to find the best plays.
- Short words matter: two- and three-letter words let you squeeze extra points out of tight spots.
- For jumbles and daily word puzzles, set the exact length to see only words that fit.
What word list does it use?
The unscrambler combines the public-domain ENABLE word list with the SCOWL English word lists — the same kind of lists used by many word games and spell checkers — and leaves out slurs and profanity. Common words are shown in darker text so you can spot everyday words first. Definitions come from WordNet (Princeton University) and our own dictionary. Everything runs in your browser; your letters are never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
- How does the word unscrambler work?
- Type your letters and it checks them against about 184,000 English words, listing every word that can be made from those letters, longest first. Each letter can be used only as often as you typed it. Add ? or * for blank tiles that can be any letter.
- What is an anagram solver?
- An anagram uses all the same letters in a different order, like listen and silent. When a word can be made from all of your letters, the unscrambler shows it at the top as an anagram, so it works as an anagram solver too.
- Can I use blank tiles or wildcards?
- Yes. Type a question mark or an asterisk for each blank tile, up to 15 letters in total. Letters filled by a blank score zero points, as they do in board games.
- Does it include plurals and verb forms?
- Yes. The word list includes plurals, past tenses, -ing forms, and comparatives like 'tables', 'jumped', 'running', and 'bigger', because word games accept them. Tick 'Common words only' to see just everyday words.
- How are the points calculated?
- Points use the classic letter values from crossword-style board games (for example E = 1, K = 5, Q and Z = 10). Board bonuses aren't included because they depend on where the word is placed.
- Is it free and private?
- Yes. It's free with no sign-up, and it runs in your browser — your letters are never sent anywhere.
