How to play Hangman

Hangman is the classic pencil-and-paper word-guessing game. One player picks a secret word and draws a dash for each letter. The other player guesses one letter at a time:

If the letter is in the word, it’s written on every dash where it appears.
If it isn’t, one part of the hangman drawing is added — head, body, arms, and legs.

What makes them hard:

Rare letters — J, Q, X, Z, V, K, W, and Y are usually guessed last (quiz, jinx, fjord).
Few or no vowels — rhythm, lynx, glyph, nymph use Y instead of a vowel.
Repeated letters — buzz, fuzz, fluffy have few different letters, so there’s less to find.
Many look-alikes — short patterns like _ILL (bill, fill, hill, kill, mill, pill, will) leave the guesser choosing between many answers.

Hangman strategy: how to win

Start with the most common letters. In English the order is roughly E T A O I N S H R D L C. Opening with E, A, O, and I finds the vowels fast.
Look for patterns. Endings like -ING, -TION, -ED, and -ER, and pairs like TH, SH, CH, and QU, fill in quickly once one letter lands.
Use the length. Very short words tend to hide rare letters; long words almost always contain E, R, S, T, or N.
Save your hints for the end, when one letter is all that stands between you and the word.

Where does Hangman come from?

Hangman is at least a hundred years old. An early version, called Birds, Beasts and Fishes, was recorded in Alice Bertha Gomme’s Traditional Games (1894): players guessed the name of an animal from its first and last letters. Today it’s a classroom favorite for spelling and vocabulary. Some teachers play a gentler version called Snowman or Spaceman, where a picture is drawn instead.
