  1. I am thinking about teaching English in Japan or China under a Disney program, but I have to take the TOEFL. How much does this exam cost? I am pretty poor right now. Is financial assistance available? :shy:
  2. Where can I translate some lyrics? I heard the song "Yo No Fui" and wanted to have it translated. I used Google Translator, but of course most of the meaning is lost. Does anyone know of a site that does this or has English/Spanish translations of songs? Thanks!
  3. I have seen some of these books at my local thrift shop in Los Angeles. I have tried to find them in my local library, but they seem to only carry novels and some grammar work books. You might find some on Amazon or ebay. You can try a college bookstore too.
  4. Thanks so much for this. I am just starting to get back into learning and studying Spanish, but I don't know where to begin. I know I am not a beginner, but am trying to figure out what level I am so I can buy books and lessons accordingly. This is just what I needed.
  5. I am sure my first French movie was "Romance." My friend's brother had it in his room and we would watch 30 minutes of it each day after school. It was more of an erotic and adult movie than anything about "Romance." We were just fascinated by it.
  6. I love how your passion for French stems from your family. That is so sweet. I think the dialect might not translate too well in France because I am assuming that your grandmother spoke French Creole because she was from the Louisiana area.
  7. Thanks for this link. I love how it's reliable and updated. Whenever I buy a Spanish/English dictionary I always check to see what date it was published so I know I am getting the most current information too.
  8. I think Mexican slang words area always funny. I am still laughing at the word "culero." My little cousin picked it up at school. I googled it and it means "A-hole." It just sounds uglier in spanish for some reason.
  9. I love the way Londoners speak. It just makes me melt. That and Aussies. Aussies and New Zealanders fascinate me. I love the way they sound. They sound so exotic and cool.
  10. I agree that it's best to slowly increase and expand so that people don't feel too overwhelmed. There's already so much going on that I feel like I am missing out. I'm not learning Chinese and I am missing out on all of the fun in those forums!
  11. I always have dreams in Spanish and I find them to be so weird because I hear people speaking perfect Spanish. I don't even know some of the words they are saying. It's like watching a telenovela and I am trying to keep up with them. :frozen:
  12. Haha thanks Adam! I always have a hard time with conjugation. I instantly clicked on this when I saw your post. Thanks for the laugh!
  13. I don't think you need that second period. I publish online all of the time and our rule book says not to. I also have never seen anything published with two periods. I think it is assumed the sentence ends afterward.
  14. For some reason, I always trip over the word "particularly." I think it's the double Ls or something. It could be that some people say it "particular-ly" and others say "particu-lair-ly" the extra emphasis throws me off so much.
  15. I like subtitles if I am trying to learn the language because it helps me pick up on new words and it gives those new words some context. The only time I like watching dubbed shows is if I am watching movies for entertainment and my eyes are strained. Most of the time the dubbed voices are annoying and you lose so much from the original performance. Those inflections aren't there.
  16. I don't know how many people get this mixed up. Just think of "you're" as "you are." It's that difficult. I would think the apostrophe lets you know there is a break so think of it as a separation and thus, two words. I learned it fairly early on. Ugh, just frustrates me. lol
  17. I hate the use of quotations to emphasize words and I hate the use of the word "fresh" when it is used by people who mean to say "cool." They say things like "It is so fresh today." I think they are taking it from the word "fresco" and translating it to fresh.
  18. I hope to get a better job once I am fully fluent. I have seen so many jobs that I want to do in film and tv production, but they are looking for bilingual workers in LA because of the boom in Latino media.
  19. I live in a neighborhood that is predominantly Hispanic so if you want to work around here are you have to be bilingual. Spanish is useful even when shopping. If I go to a restaurant around here and I order in Spanish I get better portions and sometimes my meals are cheaper.
  20. I don't think so. Most high schools make you take 2 years of a foreign language so I don't know why it should be forced upon for another year. You either want to learn more or you don't.
  21. I spoke Spanish until I was 4, but then forgot it when I went to school. Then I took a Spanish class in high school (it was required) and have been learning it ever since. I needed to learn it for my job at a video store in a hispanic neighborhood.
  22. I don't have that channel, but I am sure you can get some videos for free at the library or pick up some books at the library and not have to pay anything. The internet also has a lot of free videos and resources. I wouldn't pay unless it was hard for you to reach the other resources.
  23. It is only important to me if I am dating that person. It really doesn't matter if a co-worker or my family does not use correct grammar, but it bugs me if I am dating someone who doesn't know correct grammar. I have no idea why I have lower standards for everyone else. Does that make me a selective grammar nazi?
  24. I sometimes wish that I was born speaking Spanish so it would be easier for me to pick up French and Italian. I feel like it is so much easier to learn other languages when you speak Spanish first. Then I'd learn German and English!
  25. Hahaha! This hasn't happened to me, but I have done this to another person. It was also a hispanic person. I live in Los Angeles and some Mexican ladies don't speak any English. Some get mad if you don't speak Spanish (and look Mexican) so I started speaking Spanish to a lady and she got offended. It just made me laugh. I'm Native American and my whole life I had Mexican ladies give me dirty looks for not speaking or understanding Spanish.
