That is another perspective diprod, if we do know languages and we are in the right place at the right time that could mean a huge boost in our career, but there are careers that don't value languages at all.

We have that saying in Portuguese as well Trellum, well, a similar one: ''Más vale pajaro en mano que cientos volando'' - "Mais vale um pássaro na mão que dois a voar", the meaning is exactly what you say, better value what we have instead of looking for better things, we might end up losing what we have...

It's very common for people to make all sort of mistakes when speaking, I think it's normal. One thing is, do they made a mistake while talking or they really don't know how to? Does that really matter? Other thing is pronouncing words in a strange way like justus say, some words become fashionable said in an incorrect way, it's one of the strangest fashions I've seen!

I think it depends a lot on the country. In your case lizbeth, can everyone the Philippines understand each other or are there some dialects that are not understood by the Tagalog speakers? At the same level, is Catalan a dialect of Spanish or an independent language?

I see it pretty much as Daimashin puts it, we have a language and for some reason some of their speakers start to make some changes in the way words are spoken, if the changes are big enough it turns into "another" language - a dialect.

I haven't studied any, but I have a friend that studied both and he commented with me that he found Chinese easier than Japanese because the sentence structure and grammar from Chinese is really simple...? If you ask me they seem two of the most difficult languages to learn in the world, just the sight of those infinite Chinese characters scare me away!

Great post kilat, you are so right, kids are like sponges and they do lose the ability to learn with age, not only languages, but everything is easier when kids are younger. Being in a bilingual atmosphere would make language learning for them something natural and easier than just study. I always try to speak English around my kids so that can start to pick up the accent and some words.

Field trips are always great in my opinion, the question is, where would the teachers take their students? If the teachers can find a community where natives are speaking that language and that is willing to receive students, great, but I think this is something rare to happen or difficult at least.

I am really surprised with this, what's the reason not to have a universal sign language? Is sign language a "transition" from the sounds of the national language? What happened with Mandela was from another world, I do agree with Trellum, that guys must have mental issues.

I'd say both Spanish and English seem pretty great for swearing! Come on, when you say hijo de p*** in Spanish or a**h*** in English, it doesn't get much worse than that, it's a big aggressiveness in the tone and words, strong stuff!

Learning languages is a huge investment mostly of our time, no question about that. The languages I've learned as a kid, like English, of course I didn't see it that way because kids don't understand the term investment, they just do what their parents and teachers tell them to. But learning a language as an adult is indeed a big investment of money and many many hours of our time.

Here at my country we have a saying "Burro velho não aprende linguas" (old donkey doesn't learn languages lol), this proves the point it's harder to learn a language as a grown up than as a kid. Having this said, I think the interest and the effort you put in count a big deal, especially when you said he was smart for everything else. He might also not be gifted for languages though.
