  1. Welcome to the forum! This is really a great way to meet people who want to learn the languages and it's good to share what you've learned as well. Hope you're enjoying your stay on the new country. All the best!
  2. I agree. Watching movies will help you enhance your grammar skills and vocabulary. Additionally, you can watch tv series especially series that have good story lines like political drama or crime/police shows. I noticed they used terms that are not familiar or not used often so you will have to look it up on dictionaries. This way you will learn a new word by just watching.
  3. I tried to study Korean before and was able to form sentences however I wasn't able to practice it as the days go by and now I have forgotten what I've learned. Maybe I'll try learning it once again after I'm done learning Japanese.
  4. I haven't heard of this Michel Thomas Method before but it does sounds good to use. If it will make learning languages easier, I would definitely try using this method.
  5. I agree that Spanish is a language that is most valuable to learn aside from English. In my country, our words are mostly influenced by the Spanish language and I think other countries as well have words that they adapted from it. However learning a second language that you can call valuable to learn still depends on where you will be using it or what you will be using it for. If let's say you start a business in Asia, in a specific country in that continent, you need to learn the common language used from that country for you to be able to communicate well.
  6. If given the chance, I will grab the opportunity to go back to school and study a language. I've done this before and it was fun. It's good to be in the same room with students who are learning the same language and I can practice it on the spot while talking with them.
  7. I have difficulties pronouncing my "r's" but I think I've improved a bit ever since I practice reading out loud. I think when you read out loud, it is easier for you to emphasize a certain word or letter and eventually you'll get used to it.
  8. Yeah I have. This especially occurs whenever I'm writing an essay or article in which I use some words that I don't usually use in a casual conversation. I think my mind is just conscious about the words I'm writing that's why I can easily feel if I spelled a word incorrectly.
  9. Welcome to the forum! I'm also from the Philippines and is currently self-studying Nihongo. I also want to learn Korean because I love watching Korean variety shows and sometimes I couldn't find any subtitles on it.
  10. Welcome to the forum! This forum is really a great way to know more about different languages and also to gain online friends who have the same interest to learn a language!
  11. Hello there fellow Filipino! I too would like to learn the Korean language but for now I am trying to focus on Nihongo because I wanted to understand Japanese drama and anime better (without subtitles). I also love watching Korean dramas and Korean variety shows.
  12. I agree. The best option is still to look for someone who knows the language. There might be some same words but different usage or meaning that only a person can translate it properly.
  13. Wow! This is indeed a fun activity and a great way to learn different languages. I wouldn't translate it anymore though because someone already did.
  14. Translating this into Filipino language Good Morning - Magandang Umaga! How are you? - Kumusta ka? What is your name? - Ano ang iyong pangalan? or Ano ang pangalan mo? My name is Ray. - Ang pangalan ko ay Crystal
  15. I'm using this app calle imiwa? in learning new Japanese words. It's the best Japanese dictionary app I found because it not only translate a particular word into english but also in different kinds of language. You can also learn Japanese characters (kanji, kana) with this app.
  16. I downloaded this game/app on my phone once I upgraded to smartphone and I got instantly hooked. It is a fun game at the same time you get to exercise your thinking cells because of how you analyze the 4 photos together.
  17. I love Haruki Murakami's style of writing. I've got lots of favorite books he wrote but my top 1 is probably Kafka on the Shore. His surrealistic style of writing is what captivated my attention most.
  18. Wow! I didn't even know that there is such a thing called "extended metaphor." I'm glad Siovene had clearly explained its difference. I learned something new today.
  19. Yes cursive writing is still being taught here in our nation. It's part of the requirements for students here to learn how to write in this form. I actually prefer cursive writing especially when I'm in a hurry.
  20. This is interesting! It's very helpful and I totally agree with all the common mistakes shown on the link. There are time's that the I just want to say what I have in mind but had never thought about the usages of words I'm putting.
  21. I think when someone says poor grammar it means the sentence construction and the usages of words. We may think that we are good in writing and speaking the english language but we never thought about the "rules" in constructing a sentence while we're talking. Honestly, I know how to speak and write in English but I know I'm not good with grammar.
  22. I think if you're looking for a job as an online-translator, you can sign up on Odesk or Elance. They've got a huge list of home-based job openings one of which is for online translator. I've never tried applying for the same position but I did worked at Odesk and Elance before and it's very convenient when it comes to looking for job, interacting with possible employers and of course the payment system.
  23. Great info! It's hard to find translation websites that are reliable and will give you the exact meaning of words. I have used several websites and apps but it didn't satisfy me. I will try using Linguee. Thanks!
  24. For those who want to learn the Japanese language or would like to expand their Japanese vocabulary, I suggest you download the app "Imiwa" on your phone. It's free and very easy to navigate. It also shows how it is written in kana/kanji. There are also items categorized per JLPT level.
