I love it when there is a structure built for my learning like a daily schedule of lessons. Sometimes, I feel like I have to force myself just to meet the said schedule and defeating the purpose of really learning.

Learn Spanish Communication - Online course
kurdapia replied to EichelCourses's topic in Promote your Website/App/Game/Video
Is there an online resource we can check? I am curious to know the scope of the lessons with specific details on what a student should learn. That way we will be able to tell if this is the right product to buy or if we are better learning on our own- 2 replies

The four different learning types
kurdapia replied to CourseFindersGermany's topic in Promote your Website/App/Game/Video
Learning a new language will require me a lot of time and discipline. I think if there are audio files or video tutorials it would help me a lot to learn a foreign language. I will be bored with reading a text book or online lessons and would lose my interest. -
A lot of people do not think entirely in words. Out thoughts are a combination of images, ideas and notions. Some say if you want to reach an unbiased decision, try processing your thoughts in a foreign language. The process may be a bit difficult for most thereby eliminating the need to use your emotions to color your perceptions and choices.

Youtube is my main source of tutorials but the problem is they are not complete or reliable if you are serious about becoming fluent with the language. I wonder if there is a reliable site that is for free where we can learn. I am thinking of a well-structured lessons.

The multilingual idioms thread // Crowdsourcing Project
kurdapia replied to linguaholic's topic in Language Learning
I am done adding some. I am not sure though if the entries I put in the spreadsheet were automatically saved. This is my first time to use google docs. -
Do you find it odd or do you get laughed at when you use some unfamiliar or rarely used Tagalog terms? Terms like naninibugho instead of nagseselos, busilak and dalisay. Do you think it is not cool to use them anymore?

It really helps if you get immersed in the culture and I am glad to hear from someone who is a native speaker. I think you said it right in your comment and I appreciate it. I now understand it better given the examples you mentioned above

It is like a page with links to different sites. I think I can use it I just need time to find the link that suits me. I tried clicking on some of them and one of them makes me download something on itunes so that is not for me as I am now more careful. I do not want to infect my pc with more malwares. There is one link that lead me to a youtube channel with a nicely presented lessons but I am assuming these are not complete. I will spend more time to find the right one for me. I will bookmark it for now thanks lushlala for the information

I tried using lo siento before. I know that is one of the phrases I can use to say sorry but the person I was talking to never said anything back. I thought I said something wrong or what not. It felt like I just made another blunder. I was relieved to know here though that I was using the right one and learned some more thanks

It really is an advantage if you know how to speak and even write language other than your own. When I see some job opportunities that requires a candidate to be bilingual with huge salary, it makes me feel bad for ignoring the opportunities to learn when I was still in school. For now, it may not be about employment but as a personal fulfillment if I become bilingual. You never know when an opportunity will present itself.

I personally start my lesson with the IPA and alphabets then followed by the numbers. That is how I would want to begin if I were to learn a foreign language especially if it is a bit different from the English language. I want to cover the basics, I do not want to skip it only to refer back to it when there is a need because that would mean chaos to me.

Does etymology make learning a new language easier?
kurdapia replied to g2narat's topic in Language Teaching
It is fun to discover something about a new term like how is it related to another word or where it actually originated. I personally love knowing about language or word origins and I also feel the same OP. It makes the experience interesting and fun for me. Sometimes I find some words which are related to my own native language isn't that nice to know? That can make me remember something even better. -
How do you find time to study a new language?
kurdapia replied to Trellum's topic in Language Learning
Instead of playing games or posting new blog posts I use that time to learn a new language. These activities consume like an hour or so of my time each day so I would rather set them aside while I am focusing on something important like studying some grammar lessons. As a supplement to that I also try to think in the foreign language throughout the day and it helps. -
I think that is a bit frustrating for me. Imagine my enthusiasm to practice what I learned and here comes a friendly native replying in plain English. I do appreciate the effort but my confidence just dropped down and I felt like a total stranger trying my hardest to apply what I learned. I will try the next cafe perhaps or the sidewalk and look for someone who obviously does not speak in English.
-
I would prefer something that I can still use as a reference -- a reliable and complete one. It should be complete with all the grammar rules and exercises. Something that I can pass on to a friend who also wants to learn the real thing. Maybe the new style might be easier to follow but it may not contain all the information that a learner ought to know.

That is my problem I do not know how to find those special characters and I am just too lazy to use alt codes. I do have a French keyboard but I have not used it yet. Thanks for the Google extension you mentioned I might try that one day. I think that would help me a lot.

Do you try to think in a foreign language?
kurdapia replied to True2marie's topic in Language Learning
While learning the English language, I forced myself everyday to think in English and it helped me big time. Before we speak, the mind has to process the thoughts first so why not think in your target language right away? No need to translate your thoughts that you conceived using your native language thereby making it quicker to process your ideas. -
How do you say Merry Christmas in your second language?
kurdapia replied to True2marie's topic in Language Learning
I do not know how to say Merry Christmas in my second language of choice but let me just say it in my native language Filipino " Maligayang Pasko" -
Utilize the lego or whatever toys and games they enjoy playing. Get to know what works for them and what makes them tick. It is only then that you can come up with a methodology that is fit for their needs and learning style. It could be easy to acquire a certain knowledge but it is not easy transferring this knowledge especially to kids with shorter attention span.

[Duolingo] Sometimes, Duolingo makes us write dumb things.
kurdapia replied to 111kg's topic in Language Study Apps
That may sound odd because you are just starting to learn the language perhaps. I do not mind just as long as the app is useful for me. Right now I had to stop using it because the lessons do not stick to my memory. It is fun but it is not working for me. I guess I need a teacher or stop doing the self phased lessons. -
What do you think of those learning 5 languages at once?
kurdapia replied to Trellum's topic in Language Learning
If my brain is properly wired to learn five or even more languages, then I will certainly go for it. There are people who can do that with ease and there are those who could not even manage to learn one new language. Thinking about it yes that is possible because in school we learn a lot of subjects from math to history and language each day and we manage to survive the ordeal. I guess it would be more easier to learn several languages than learning whatever it is on your school curriculum -
Language learning - daily or from time to time?
kurdapia replied to anna3101's topic in Language Learning
Repetition works for my kind of learning and I think it should for all. How can I possibly remember a lesson if I do not practice it on a repetitive or regular basis? Sure I can learn anything I want to because I have the enthusiasm and motivation but that can not happen in just one sitting. For me, I still believe in order for the language learning to work I must have regular lessons. -
Some idioms are derived from the country's culture or how things are done in a certain way. If you are not a native you will certainly would not understand or the idiom may not make sense because you are not aware about the background story or idea behind it. Even if you studied and are fluent in a certain language, once the natives started using unfamiliar idioms you will somehow feel being left out.

I always remind myself about my goals why I would want to learn a new language. If I do not know the reason or the goal I would most likely get demotivated or distracted easily. I understand the idea of having fun while learning and making a regular schedule but what really works for me is knowing what benefits should I get from this new language.
