What do you mean by "visually"? Reading and writing or even something like watching movies (which is good for associate words with situations)?

We have that too, it's called Diktat here. But I meant more real special competitions and not just such for kids.

In the US there are these spelling competitions for kids quite a common thing and we all know of school competitions. But is there anything else like that you know of?

Yes, somehow. I also noticed that I will have thoughts in English when I've been writing a lot in English language lately. But I can't remember to have learned a language this way. If I don't know a language but had real much to do with it it is more like building parts of sentences.
