  1. Hi Terryse, welcome! Linguaholic is a fun site. You will learn many things here, especially if your are really interested in foreign language. Have fun.
  2. I love reading English books. I read different kinds, from classic to modern. It doesn't matter if it's comedy, suspense, inspirational, horror or romance. Some of my favorite authors are John Grisham and Robert Cook. I read 2-3 books in a week.
  3. A vs AN. "A" is use in the beginning of a consonant and "AN" for vowels. There's an exception, in words with silent H like Hour, Honorable "an" is use. For the words that start in U, but read as You, like Unicorn "A" is use. I will see you in AN hour. I want to see A unicorn. for the word EAR, it's right to say AN ear.
  4. I had an English professor who was strict in the class. She did not want to hear any noise when she's in front. All the cellphones should be off or in silent mode. One time she ask my classmate to get out because she forgot to silent her phone and somebody called her. She was strict but she teach really well.
  5. The next language I want to learn is spanish. Some of my co workers and clients are speaking spanish. It will be nice if I know how to communicate with them. It will improve my relationship with my co workers at the same time I believe I can give better service with the clients if I know how to speak their language. Somehow it's a plus.
  6. This is a fun way of learning. Since, it's an application in your phone or tablet. You have it with you most the time. Using it is very convenient. You can use it anytime you want. Of course the words are really limited, unlike if you are using a book.
  7. hello SpiralArchitech, welcome to linguaholic. You will find this site really interesting. The topics can run from different languages to anything. For sure you will enjoy here.
  8. I think a person should learn foreign language because she/he wants it and not because it is a requirement in their school. That person should be interested with the subject. Learning new language is a choice and it can be done with joy if your doing it willingly and not just because it's a must.
  9. I had a penpal before but not because of my language class. She is a friend of my friend. We been exchanging letters for few years, then met personally when she visited our country. We are still friends up to now.
  10. I still think that owning a physical dictionary is still useful. I still use it everytime I read books. There are times I find physical dictionaries more convenient to use. I have a pocket dictionary and I always have it with me, everytime I read books. I can bring it anywhere.
  11. I attend classes in learning new language. I also study alone. I use internet in learning. I thing it's both helpful in becoming fluent in a particular language. In learning with other students it gives you a chance to interact with other people. You can practice what you are learning.
  12. This young guy is an inspiration to everybody. His dedication in learning new languages is unbelievable. Watching this motivates me to be more aggressive in learning new language.
  13. The longest time for me without talking is just a day. Most of the time if I'm alone in the house I will call a friend so I can have someone I can talk to. I live alone, but I always have friends or family members visiting me. So it is very seldom that I'm alone in the house.
  14. I had a teacher in arts, she was fluent in french. During breaktime she will teach us french words. Her love for arts are really unbelievable. She had a great influences from her french grandmother. She encouraged us to try to learn different cultures/people as many as we can, inspires us to study languages that we think can help us in the future. Her outlook in life is very inspiring.
  15. Teaching a child a different language at an early stage is better. It increases their vocabularies. They can easily comprehend words before the age of three. At that age the ability to hear different phonetic pronunciations is at its sharpest. It will also help if he can constantly hear a conversation in that particular language. The child tries to mimic everything we say. Another thing that can also help is to introduce one word at a time. Showing a picture of an object, teaching him in your native language and the foreign language.
  16. This is very informative. Thanks for sharing. Before looking at the picture, I was thinking Mandarin will be the first on the list because of their population, but spanish being second, I did not expect that. I'm thinking English to be the second.
  17. Hi Ariel, welcome to linguaholic. This is a good site for people who have the passion to learn new languages. It's not all about different languages but also everything and anything under the sun. You will find this site really interesting. Have a good one.
  18. Before I can say speaking is the hardest part, I'm more confident in writing than speaking. I can express myself more in writing. But then living in other country for years and using that language everyday makes me more confident with myself. I find speaking easier now. But nonetheless, I can say in learning new language speaking part is the hardest for me.
  19. When you are talking to somebody, do you suddenly get confuse with how you will say it? An hour or a hour?
  20. Learning new language brings different feelings. In my case, at first my goal is to seek better opportunities for my career. Then as I travel, I realized that it's helpful. There is a big difference if you have the knowledge to different languages. You always have an edge in everything. That makes it more fun.
  21. Hi pogyo, welcome to linguaholic. I think you will enjoy being here as much as we do.
  22. I think hebrew or arabic are the most hardest. The writing and the pronunciation makes it harder. Languages that use characters seems really hard for me. There was a time that I want to learn hebrew. But watching videos online I gave up.
  23. I don't see any reason why it's not possible. I don't think age can be a hindrance if you really want to learn something. It is not the age but your attitude. Go for it. You can do it. Goodluck.
