  1. It depends on what kind of phone and what operating system do you use. If you use an IPhone, the IOS provides its Chinese keyboard for typing. For an Android device, which I use now, I download Google Pinyin, which is an awesome software for Chinese keyboard.
  2. 你好,伊万。我叫 Sam. 你是哪裡人? 你現在學中文嗎?
  3. I'm very strict when comes to Spelling. Technology does change the way people can use any software that has spell checks. Microsoft Word does offer spell check while people are typing. I think that's very convenient and at the same time, spoil the way people spell words. I have always paid attention to spelling because I try not to reply on the technology too much.
  4. I did, which was Japanese. I gave up learning Japanese when I was in high school because it was too difficult for me to learn. I didn't do very good on the quizzes and exams because I wasn't into learning Japanese. The only reason I learned the language was that I was required to learn a second language in order to graduate from high school. I have already known Chinese, which it counted as a second language.
  5. I try to avoid using Slang because I consider it's unprofessional to use Slang in both speaking and writing. I do notice there are probably more than half of the population in the United States use Slang words during their conversations or when they write. I think most of them don't use proper English as their everyday conversations because that's how the American culture is nowadays. People are taught to use proper English only when they write. I don't mind people use Slang words, but as long as they don't over the plate is fine with me.
  6. 對我來說,杭州的西湖好漂亮。我喜歡看白蛇傳,電視裡面也有看到西湖和雷峰塔。杭州的西湖和雷峰塔真的是旅游聖地。我有機會也去那裡看看。
  7. 我的中文不太好,有時會說幾句英文。我就是住在 Oregon. Oregon 來西雅圖大概 3個小時 (by driving). 天氣變化好大的,凍天比較長。夏天很短,有時都比較熱的。我來了美國也差不多 16 年了。
  8. That is a great quote you have found right there! I like it a lot! Thank you for sharing it here! Cheers!
  9. It really depends on the your learning method and your level of the language. It doesn't have any set of time because it's totally up to you to study Chinese anytime you want. It also depends on how many years have you learned Chinese and how much of Chinese do you know. I remember when I started learning Chinese in Kindergarten, I spent at least 50 or more hours per week. Although I was young, my dad would push me to learn as much as Chinese as possible.

  11. I grew up in China, where I was born to speak Cantonese. I have learned Mandarin when I was little, whom I was about 3 years old. Chinese is an important language to me, and I speak both dialogues in which I speak mostly Cantonese at home. Chinese has been useful for me because that's the language my parents and my wife speak.
  12. Miya, 你好。我是廣州人,現在我也是住在美國。我喜歡看書,有時寫下東西,就好像現在這樣。你的中文不錯啊。我的中文很差的。 It is nice to meet you!
  13. It is very impossible to learn Chinese in 5 minutes. I think the attachment contains what I called Pinyin, which is similar to the pronunciation alphabets of English. These Pinyins will only help you to pronounce the words, but you have to write them in either a Traditional or Simplified form. The Pinyin is the pronunciation form of Mandarin. Thank you for sharing!
  14. It depends on where you live. I grew up speaking Cantonese because that's the language I speak to my parents. I learned Mandarin when I was in Kindergarten. I live Oregon, United Stbates, where most Chinese people speak Cantonese. I think Mandarin is more complicated to learn because the dialogue is far more different than Cantonese.
  15. I used to feel shy around people when I came to the United States, which was about 15 years ago. Now, I don't feel this way because I was able to communicate with people who speak the same language as I do. I do have an tiny accent when I speak English, but it doesn't stop me from learning English.
  16. At first, I think it's a mirror. But then again it's not reflecting to the image of himself. He's actually saying it to himself, which I assume is a photo because he's holding the picture of himself.
  17. My best English teacher isn't the teacher who teaches me English. My English teacher is whom or what I have learned from. For example, books and talk-radio shows sometimes teach me what I don't know about English. They are the true English teachers because I have learned a lot from them. Good question, by the way!
  18. There are a lot of people who use English in an improper way. It sometimes annoys me because I thought I am the one who have heard things wrong. For instance, I have heard some people say "Never a dull moment", which I can't stand that because people think their life is always good but boring. I have one person who actually comes to me and says he doesn't like the sound of that tone.
  19. I started learning English when I was in elementary school, when I was about 7 years old. The school where I went required students to learn basic English such as vocabularies, sentence structures, grammar, and speaking skills. Although English wasn't my native language, but it was the language I cannot live without.
  20. Same here! I would recommend my friends to read Young Adult books because that's the most popular type in the United States. I like reading Young Adult Contemporary novels, which they can relate to real life stories. Contemporary is also one of my favorite genres.
  21. I haven't learn any new language after English because English is simply enough for me. Although I think learning a new language depends on personal interest or school requirement or whatnot, I still like English because it's a universal language. I have spoken English for as long as I can remember. I don't know any reason why I don't like English just because I use it everyday.
  22. I speak two languages, which are English and Chinese. I speak two dialogues in Chinese, which one is Cantonese and the other one is Mandarin. I also learned French when I was in college, but I dropped out the class because it was too difficult for me.
  23. I have learned Japanese when I was in high school. I dropped out the class after 5 months because I had a hard time learning the language. I didn't do well on the quizzes and exams. I have given up learning Japanese because I lost interest. There was no reason for me to continue to learn Japanese anymore. It was one of the most difficult languages I have ever learned.
  24. I think Vietnamese is the language that's least appealing to me. I don't like the sound of Vietnamese because it is strange to hear people speak the language. Another reason is that Vietnamese sounds like people are yelling to each other. The tone isn't as natural as other languages.
  25. Same here! I learned English in my primary school in my country, China. I was lucky because I was able to learn English there because not many schools offered English courses back in the day. Now, English has become one of the main subjects in all the school in China. I was so glad I have learned English in an earlier age.
