  1. I am both the auditory and visual learner, which I often read books and write down the unfamiliar words for a few times in order to have them memorized. Another method would be by repetition, which it helps me to understand the language better when I use it often. I can also understand better by listening and reading.
  2. It depends on what situation though. I would rather use examples because at least I don't have to actually use some technical terms in which people have no idea what I am talking about. This is the biggest obstacle for some new learners when comes to technical terms because they would want to learn in simpler ways or have people to explain the meaning every time they use technical terms. I also think it depends on the area of the field.
  3. "Whether" and "If" are two different things, means that they share different meaning in English language. "Whether" is use when you actually giving two options, which you are asking the person or being asked that you have to pick one or another. "If", in my own opinion, tells about what will happen when you do or don't do certain things. It means something can happen, like the possibility to happen when you use the word "if".
  4. I have learned linking verb when I was in middle school, which my English teacher would teach us all the grammars and basic sentence structures. I always enjoy learning this kind of grammar because I like learning English, which is one of my favorite languages besides Chinese.
  5. I would say use "an" when the word begins with a vowel. However, I believe you use "an" when there's a vowel after the first letter of the word. For instance, you would use an hour, not a hour because there's a vowel after the "h". Also, the word hour in which you have to use your tongue to pronounce it.
  6. I would think "must" is something that requires you to complete almost immediately, which there's no other choice besides the task in which you have to complete. "Need' sounds less harsh than "must" because it doesn't mean you have to do the things so rush. I think "must" is more like a regulation in which you have to follow no matter what.
  7. Yes, true. There are two types of comparison sentences, which I have learned both of them when I was in middle school. I am so glad I have learned it early because that is what I often use in writing.
  8. "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is one of my dad's favorite novels and movies. There are a few versions of the movie, which he likes the original one because it is more realistic. The "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" teaches people a lot of things in various topics such as politics, history, critical thinking, and more. I don't normally watch this kind of movie or read this kind of book because I won't be able to understand if it's in Chinese because my Chinese is broken. I do think it's such a learning material for those who would like to learn about the history and politic about the three kingdoms.
  9. It depends on the people though. I would think if you can speak the language in that particular country and am able to survive, I think you have 'passed'. I don't think knowing a new language has given me the ability to 'pass' in another culture because there are a lot of areas I still don't understand. Perhaps, I would have to spend the rest of my life living in that particular country then.
  10. It depends on how many days will you stay in Spain. I stayed in China for almost two weeks. No luck. I didn't make any friend at all. I hope you will make new friends once you're in Spain. Cheers!
  11. I don't call my mom "mama" and my dad "papa". I think children usually call their parents that though because it sounds cute. I normally call my mom "mom" and my dad "dad", but I sometimes just call them "mama" and "baba" in Chinese. Interesting post.
  12. Is she trying to improve her speaking, writing, or reading skill in the language in which she's learning? I would say for speaking, talk with other people who speak the language. That is the best way to practice. She can also listen to the radio or audiobook for that, which it also helps. Reading, for instance, she can read books that's in the language in which she's learning. That's a great way to improve her reading skill. Writing, on the other hand, is the hardest because it depends on how well the person knows about the language and much more. I would say reading books and writing articles will help her to improve her writing skill.
  13. I have met someone oversea, which we started to talk and get to know each other. It was my mother who introduced this girl to me, otherwise, it was impossible to know this girl. Plus, this is the girl whom I married to, whom became my wife.
  14. It sounds very strange, but I cannot effectively learn how to speak a language by listening to movie dialog. It's a different learning method, which I don't have to ability to do that unless I know the language. If I don't know the language or start to learn a new language, then I won't be able to listen to the movie dialog in order to learn the language effectively. I have to speak with someone else with the same language in order to practice my skill.
  15. I have read Anita Blake series, which isn't bad considering the series is quite interesting. I don't usually have specific authors or books that I dislike because I am very picky when comes to books. I would do the research before I go ahead to read the books, which it's less likely that I will dislike the books. I believe one book I didn't quite like was the Twilight series, which I only read the first page of the first chapter before I decided to let it go.
  16. It depends on what genre of the book do you like to read. There are a lot of genres such as Contemporary, Science Fiction, Romance, Fantasy, Historical, Dystopian, and more. I like reading Contemporary because most of the books relate to real life stories, which I enjoy reading them. Some of my favorite books are "Lock and Key" by Sarah Dessen, "Someone Like You" by Sarah Dessen, "Bloom" By Elizabeth SCott, "Between Here and Forever" By Elizabeth Scott. It really depends on your personal preference. Fairy-tale books are very good too if you are into fairy-tales.
  17. I actually use Pinyin, but then I am able to select the characters that pop up on the top of my phone's on-screen keyboard. I am able to pronounce the word by using Pinyin, which is why I can see different characters appear at the top.
  18. I think it is difficult to learn any new language just from listening to people talk, not to mention Spanish. I would think people need to learn the basis of the language and practice their reading, speaking, and writing skills, not only listen to people talk. Well, at least I cannot do that because I wouldn't understand of any word they say.
  19. I remember I read the "Beauty and the Beast" in German, which I didn't understand at all. However, the book also has English next to it, so people would be able to read the book in English if they don't understand German. It was a great book, and was one of my favorite fairy-tales.
  20. I think the best advice would be keep practice, even you think you have learned the important concept of the language. I still keep practice my Chinese although it is my native language because some of the words I learned that I have already forgotten. For speaking, writing, and reading, I would practice each of them. For instance, I still have to practicing speaking English because I will forget some of the words and pronunciations if I don't practice.
  21. I used to be very obsessed about Twitter. I am glad the forum have joined Twitter.
  22. I haven't heard of ArabicPod before, which it sounds quite interesting when I first heard about it here. I will have to check it out when I get a chance.
  23. This is one of the reasons many people find English is hard to learn because most words have multiple meanings. For me, I don't find it is difficult to learn because I usually understand the meaning of the word by reading the sentence. That is whatnI have learned in all my English instructors.
  24. This is my first seeing the Hindi language, which looks quite interesting. The writing is similar to Thai, which I think it is difficult to learn, right? Thank you for the info!
  25. I believe was is use when you have the first person in the past tense form. On the other hand, were is use when you have second and third person in the past tense form. For example: I was going to work. You were nice to me. They were heading home.
