  1. Welcome to the forum! I learned French when I was in high school. It was a difficult language to learn, regardless of all the materials available for me to learn but I still failed to keep going. I hope I would start all over again. Hope you enjoy here as much as I do.
  2. It is true that some people speak their second language better than they read or write it because they can use simpler word when they speak. Reading, on the other hand, is more complex because there are words they might not understand. They haven't learned the basis or the concept of the language, also they don't like to read or write, which is a good way to practice the language. Speaking, you can understand the overall meaning of what people say, which is different from deciphering from reading.
  3. I remember when I learned English in elementary school, it took me 3 to 4 years before I felt comfortable to talk with people in English. Since English is my second language, it took me about 4 years to become fluent, which I considered it was not too long because I have learned all the rules and grammars and everything in English. Almost all my English skills come from reading books.
  4. I prefer use smaller words which I consider simple words because I want people to understand me. I sometimes have hard time memorizing big words because I don't often use them or will not use them again. I like to make the conversation easy without throwing in some big words so I have to explain later in the conversation. It is better for me and the listener that way.
  5. I tend to use simple words because I want people to understand me rather than I have to explain the terms. I sometimes use complex words, but only when I want to talk to professionals about some work-related stuff. I try not to use as many complex vocabulary words because I like simple and easy. What about you? Do you prefer using simple or complex vocabulary words when you speak?
  6. Yes, I do, especially when I speak Chinese with people. I would throw in some English because I have forgotten some of the Chinese words. I got used to speaking English all the time, which puts me into a position that I sometimes translate for my parents. It is funny that I speak a mixed of my native and foreign languages at the same time. This is what happens when I have learned the two languages when I was young.
  7. I don't because I have accents when I speak English. I don't see the point of being prejudice because people have spent a lot of time learning a new language and worked so hard to get to know the language. I would just appreciate how well some people speak the language even though they're not born in the same country.
  8. Oh, I agree that Mandarin, English, and Spanish are the three important languages in the universe. I do see more and more people learn Spanish as their secondary language. Mandrain, which depends on where you reside because more people migrate to other countries such as Canada and the United States. Nice post you have right here!
  9. I would not say I'm a good listener, but I tend to listen to what's important. I should say I'm a selective listener because I don't digest all the things I have heard when people speak or during the conversation. I sometimes forget what people have just said, which I sometimes ask them to repeat some of the stuff they say. Yes, that drive them crazy sometimes.
  10. Welcome to the lovely community! Hope you enjoy here as much as I do. I find this site very informative and have learned a lot from other people.
  11. Never heard of this 成语。I have not seen it in the newspaper or hear people speak oor people talk on TV show. It sounds quite intetesting. There are a lot of 成语 I don't even understand what the meanings are. It is good to learn something new today.
  12. I have heard about this movie when I was in college. I didnt know it was a French movie, although its name sounded quite interesting and powerful. I will check it out someday.
  13. À l'aurore, armés d'une ardente patience, nous entrerons aux splendides Villes. In the dawn, armed with a burning patience, we shall enter the splendid Cities.
  14. Welcome to the forum! How's the Korean language learning experience? Is it hard? Hope you enjoy your stay here.
  15. I went to the post office today because I was going to send am item to China. When I filled out the declared form, which I had to write the Chinese address in the English form. Therefore, I didn't know what to do because no way was I able to translate the Chinese address into English. I am afraid Good Translate might not be a good option for that. What's the best way to translate a Chinese address into English?
  16. I used to care what others think about the way I talk when I first learned English, let's say, the first few years when I came to the United States. I got used to it, therefore, I didn't really care about what others think because that was how I could practice my English skills. I wouldn't let them to bother the way I learned English because I wasn't afraid to say the words even though I didn't pronounce them correctly.
  17. I think Chinese is harder to learn because all the strokes and characters, which have two forms - Simplified and Traditional writings. I have found Japanese is harder to speak because I have a hard time speaking most of the words when I learned Japanese in high school. Chinese is harder in a way that you have to write the strokes in the order in which they're written.
  18. I would say keep practicing by writing the words. This is how I learn when I learn new words. First, I would find the meaning of the words by looking them up in the dictionary. Next, I would write the words and the meanings down, as well as how to pronounce them. There are online dictionary that offers pronunciation, which you can listen to how to say the words. I would write the words a few times until I am able to memorize, as well as the meaning themselves.
  19. Yes, same here. I am better with reading and writing than speaking, well, probably not understand because I am able to understand well enough because I have learned my second language for a long time. I do practice my speaking skills, which is the reason I take debating classes to practice myself. That way, I am not afraid to speak the language like I used to.
  20. I haven't heard of the site before. I will take a look to see how accurate it is because I think it will help me to pronounce some words, which I have a hard time saying them. Thanks for the info!
  21. My favorite English movie is "Beauty and the Beast", which I like fairy-tale stories. Although it is a cartoon movie, but it is classic, mysterious, and entertaining. I have seen a different kind of plays a few times, and almost all of them are good enough that I would like to see more of it. I just like the story between Bella and the Beast.
  22. I remember teaching English in a foreign country is a good career and the pay is much bette than if you teach English in a foreign country. However, the difference is that people don't speak the way American people speak because they learn English different in foreign countries. I have a customer who teaches English in Eastern China, which was different because no one spoken English with him. He taught them to speak with him, which I think it was amazing how people don't speak English at all ended up spending English with him a few years later. Has anyone taught English in a foreign country? How was your experience?
  23. Japanese has been a challenging language for me learn, although there are some kanji that are similar to Chinese characters. I still find Japanese is confusing because I would have to write between kanji and characters at the same time. I would like to write in unison, means only one form is considered plenty in a language. I think kanji is the Chinese form of Traditional Chinese, which I sometimes can't remember the meaning of the words.
  24. I don't usually get frustrated because I often manage to learn the language by using various sources. I do get frustrated when I don't understand what people say sometimes because I want to be able to fully understand. I guess no matter how well you know the language, you still have to keep learning. If I can't keep learning the language for some reason, I would just quit learning because frustration will only make things worst.
  25. Telepathy actually happens to all of us sometime in our lives,, but we don't really notice or realize because we don't often believe in such a power like this. Language has taught us the way we communicate with other people and understand the form that's create within that specific language. It is a puzzle that we sometimes use telepathy to tell how we alter things around, which connects to languages at some point.
