  1. What I have learned in Reading class was that keep reading a book for about 30 minutes. Do not take any break during that time, then read as much as you can without stopping. One thing to keep in mind is that don't worry about the vocabularies in which you don't know, which will slow you down if you do. I usually know what the word means by reading the sentence before and after it, that way I have an idea of the approximate meaning of the word. Try to do 30-1, which is read nonstop for 30 minutes, then use 1 minute to check how much have you read. Hope that helps. Good luck!
  2. I personally think learning one language at a time is much easier than learning two languages at once. It is easier to focus on the language rather than piling two languages at at once. I can't image myself learning two languages at a time. I can speak two languages at a time, but learning two new languages at once is extremely difficult, not to mention the focus will cause further confusion.
  3. I grew up writing in Simplified Chinese because that was what schools taught students Simplified Chinese. I was also able to read Traditional Chinese because most of the books or newspaper I have read are in Traditional Chinese. I think Traditional Chinese to harder to learn, which words have more strokes than in Simplified Chinese. It is your personal preference. If you want to study simpler words, then Simplified Chinese is good. However, Traditional Chinese is the most commonly used type of writing in Chinese language.
  4. I was told that try to avoid using "That" in which it considers an improper word usage. I remember one of my teachers has taught me that "Which" is a better word to use in a sentence because "That" considers misuse to some people. To me, "That" means indirect to the subject, which it refers to a completely different thing. "Which", for instance, explains further to the subject in which is being said in the first place.
  5. I agree. 观察 may not be the correct answer as far as dreams go. I think the reason is that 观察 only applies to things you actually see. Dreams are kind of like visualization inside your mind. You can't really 观察 your mind, which makes sense that 思考 is probably the suitable answer. 思考 requires thoughts that are likely to appear in the dreams. The reason you have the dream is that you think of something or you have thought a lot lately. Have you heard of "日有所思,夜有所梦"? That's the answer right there!
  6. It depends on how fast are you able to digest what you've learned. It means how much do you like learning Chinese, which is the main key because that way you're interested in learning the language rather than being forced. I do see some people have spent a lot of time learning a new language, but at the end they don't really know the language because some of them might lose interest and some of them don't want to learn at all. I would say spend at least 20 hours a week on the language in order to get you through some basic stuff.
  7. I haven't used any application that can increase vocabularies, however, I do see that's one of the options for those who like to learn vocabularies by downloading third-party applications. I personally don't use vocabulary learning application because I think it is easy to get sidetracked and disturbance. The good way to learn vocabularies is by reading books and articles, which what I have done when I started learning a new language.
  8. I haven't heard about there is an application called 4 Pictures 1 Word. I usually learn vocabularies through dictionaries and books. 10. I speak two languages, which are English and Chinese. Moreover, in Chinese dialogues I speak both Cantonese and Mandarin. I grew up speaking Cantonese, which I learned Mandarin when I was 3 years old. I think Mandarin is a harder language to learn comparing to Cantonese. In other words, I think English is the easiest language to learn.
  11. It happens to me once too. I spelt "Doughnut" to "Donnut", which was a big mistake because I didn't usually misspell words. It sure was confusing to me.

  13. I haven't heard of that quote before. Where did you get the quote from? Is it from the movie or something?
  14. I personally think Cantonese and Mandarin are the same. The only difference is that they are two separate dialogues, which it depends on where you live. I grew up speaking Cantonese, which wasn't that difficult for me. I learned Mandarin when I was 3 years old, which I think it was more difficult to learn than Cantonese. I also think Mandarin is harder to speak than Cantonese, but then again Cantonese is the language in which I grew up with.
  15. I'm not sure about music, but watching Chinese movies sure help you improve your Chinese. For me, I read books in Chinese language, which is the most effectively way to learn Chinese. I remember when I was little, I read a lot of Chinese storybooks, which helped me learn Chinese quicker. I think watching Chinese TV shows is a better option to learn Chinese, as well as learning from the characters.
  16. Oh, I agree! It happens to me sometimes. I don't know why, but one thing I know for sure is that I always thought double letters don't come together.
  17. I'm with you. There are a lot of workplaces don't allow people to use any Slang word. I can see that because it considers professional in any way.
  18. I agree. The more you practice speaking, the better you're at the language because learning a new language is all about frequent practicing.
  19. I'm a bilingual, whom I speak both Chinese and English. Chinese is my native language, and I learned English when I was little. I think Chinese is the hardest language to learn comparing to English. However, many people think English is a difficult language to learn.
  20. I haven't heard about Duolinguo before, which is now a good option for me to learn a new language in the future. I will have to check out the site to see if I like it or not. I can't seem to find any good site to learn new languages, which is why Duolinguo will be a good choice there. Thank you for the recommendation! Cheers!
  21. I usually use Google Translate for everything. This is the first I have heard about this site. I will check it out now because sometimes Google Translate isn't too accurate. Thank you for the recommendation!
  22. I think music is for those who enjoy the piece of art and listen to music depend on their moods. For me, I never use music as a learning tool because I usually have to look up the lyric in order to follow the songs. I don't usually start the language learning through music.
  23. What do you mean by 采极其? I haven't heard of any word like this. Where did you find these words from? I believe you speak Mandarin, right? I would want to know where did you get that source from. Did you just translate into Chinese from a different language or something?
  24. Goldplay 不錯。我都很少聽英歌的。我比較喜歡聽國語,台灣歌曲。
