  1. I have studied when I'm really busy a few times and I so happen to get in more than 5 minutes. Sometimes when I read, I'll jot down words that I am not familiar with and research them later or if it is a foreign word I do more with it. When I am busy I will then glance at the ones that I have already prepared and try to memorize something about them. That usually gets me motivated to continue with what I am doing and at the same time I learn something with no stress at all.
  2. Great graphic Shamzblueworld. We all need to remind ourselves sometimes. It really xplains it all. Even a little kid could get it .
  3. I am going to do my first trial soon. I hope that through this forum more people will hear about it and use it as I see it being a great teacher in itself .
  4. Homonyms can be quite interesting and are sometimes used in the wrong way. Two that comes to mind now are: -Bath, a plumbing fixture for bathing or the act of bathing. -Bracket, enclosing punctuation or support for shelves.
  5. There is a story been told in the bible of the Tower of Babel and that is how I believe language came about. It is said that men spake one language and had decided to build a tower to reach the heaven. God was not pleased with their plan and so he confounded their language. They started speaking in new and different languages and so orders could not be followed and because of the confusion the tower was not completed.
  6. I became a language enthusiast in high school. I started doing Spanish for the first time. We had such a great teacher who would go beyond the syllabus and that really drew my attention to the language. When she spoke she was so fluent and I thought that if my teacher being a local could do it,then I could too .
  7. You mentioned one of my favorite Robin Williams. Just the look on his face would make anyone laugh. He perfectly in the movies. Another character I like is Bill Cosby. He is so funny. I think he captures the smallest of hearts .
  8. I doubt it was so. The English language is just a tricky language in which the rules scarcely apply. There are many other words that take a twist, for example, maintain/maintenance, so we just have to familiarize ourselves with these words and their spelling and not be confused by them.
  9. I am taking English movie to mean British. My favorite would definitely be The Italian Job. It is a movie in which a team of thieves who were double crossed by their associates in turn planned and robbed them of their gold. It is very dramatic and action packed.
  10. I have heard more natives of other language say that English was easier to learn than other languages that they have learnt. Most of them however , were immersed so that could have played a good part in them understanding and learning the language more quickly.
  11. When you learn a new language you cannot focus or put emphasis on the ones that you have learnt before. If you put too much attention in being perfect in your native tongue or other languages it makes it more difficult to master the language that you are presently learning. When you have a yearning for something great never let anything deter you from reaching your goal.
  12. It has been years since I did that. I remember writing stories and poems in high school for Spanish class. It was always fun. Sometimes our teacher would supply us with a few of the vocabularies and we would have to put them together along with our own words to create whatever we needed to. At Christmas time we did carols and that was even more fun .
  13. My interest in learning language started during my early high school years. I had a pen pal from Germany and I wished I could speak her language. Then when I started learning French I became very eager to learn as any foreign language became of interest to me.
  14. Thanks for this information. It sounds like a great aide for those of us learning a second language. The fact that you have your writing samples been corrected by natives is even greater as it would be more like immersing than just studying from a text book .
  15. Thinking now of life without language seems a bit odd but if there was none verbally, I know we would still find a way to communicate. Just as how sign language was created for the dumb and the deaf over time people would come up with something that works .
  16. In the past when I used my dictionary a lot I always look for new word and also study their meanings. Now I don't use my dictionary as often but whenever I do I still look for one or two new words on the same page to learn .
  17. Spanish could be an alternate universal language. It is a language that is already known by many. Also, a lot of people crave to learn it and even those who may not be eager to learn it do appreciate it.
  18. I don't really know any sign language but I'd be very interested in learning. A few years ago I got the privilege of learning my name and that was a great feeling . It is certainly something I'd take on in the near future.
  19. I think wanting to quit is something that happens to the best of us, I have reached that point before too. It is the love and desire for the language that pushes us to persevere to the end.
  20. Maybe in the future I'd be interested in learning uncommon languages but not presently because there is no great reason to learn them. I would consider learning them a waste if I don't have anyone to use them with, although it would be quite interesting to know one and then finally after a long time have someone to communicate with .
  21. Yes, the advancement of technology has certainly made me smarter. I can remember when I started hearing about all the things that computers were able to do I said it was not for me. Today I use the computer for so many things. It has helped me to expand my ability in so many ways.
  22. Yes, whenever I watch movies and I see the guys, whom I assume are Spanish, dressed in broad hats and waste bands I get drawn to those songs, especially when they sing to a female and play an instrument too.
  23. I've always loved French in high school and I'd love to know it better so that I could communicate well in it. I tried learning on my own but I haven't gotten far so picking up where I left off and getting to that point would be great .
  24. I'd have to vote for French. I've watched them in the movies and it's just a winner.
  25. I get the point. When I was little I was very much confused by some words too. I can only think of one now but then it was several. I always thought that the word suit was a word used only to describe a males clothing. It was some time later before I knew females also dressed in suits. A bit funny now that I'm older and look back at it.
