Puns are used quite often here, maybe at least once per day in our native language by a person. However, these are in English. -What did the painter say to the wall? One more crack and I'll plaster you. -Old policemen never die, they just cop out. -I've been to the dentist several times so I know the drill.

I don't happen to be in that situation but it is something that I think of all the time when I see this happening with others and it is truly an unfortunate situation. I have a friend whose native language is English but he studied Spanish by immersion while in college abroad. He now has a wife and children and his wife hasn't taken the opportunity to learn the language but his kids are fluent in both languages so I do understand.

I think that the later is true. I too would like to one day master American sign language. I once saw a documentary where the deaf and mute of that region did not have a language. Out of being smart, they developed one among themselves and now have a language in which they could communicate and they intern are teaching others of their region their language.

I am very fluent in speaking English and it happens to be the first language that I learnt in school, plus I have passes in both British and Caribbean exams so I'm confident that I could teach it. Not being a trained English teacher could be somewhat of a set back though, but I strongly believe that with a teachers manual I would do quite well.

I wouldn't say we speak different types of English but I do know that accents vary from country to country and even within the same region. Our English is most likely the same because whenever we write, we usually use the same words, so it is only when we speak that it is different due to diversity.

I believe the most common mistakes made in my country when using English language would be when using the tenses and spelling. Because English language is our second language but gets used whenever we write or speak formally it can be a challenge for many. When writing it is much easier to to realize the error made with tense but spelling is more of a challenge for some people.

Welcome to linguaholic Cheesypotatoes. I noticed your username than you mentioned that you were from potato land. Is it that you love potato so much or what?

I think being smart and not becoming overwhelmed with what had just happened could keep me for a long time. Since I just started learning the language, I'd use the little I know plus gestures and plenty of smile. I am sure that would have a lot of people rendering me assistance to get to where I want to go and to get other things accomplished.

These words happen to be quite simple if you can recall their meanings. To- used to express motion or indicate direction. Too- used to indicate an addition. Two-a number

'The grass is greener on the other side' is one idiom that get's used often. It refers to the fact that life is more prosperous at another location. Also, every hoe has it's stick in the bush, which refers to every person having an intimate life's partner that they will one day meet.

I would think that it is more difficult for a English Speaker to learn Spanish. It is said that English may be the easiest language to learn so if in fact it is so then the person learning English would be better able to converse and understand with even a limited amount of words.

I have never been subjected to that type of approach when learning Spanish. However, I do recall that when I was in high school the students that got the other Spanish teacher were more fluent than those that had my teacher. I later found out that it was all because of that method. She spoke only Spanish and they were only allowed to speak Spanish in her class. I guess the method is really effective than the regular.

This happens with most of our nationals, whether directly or indirectly. It so happens that not everyone is fluent in the queens English and so if someone who is not very fluent is communicating formally with a stranger or someone in a formal setting they normally try speaking English but get both languages mixed in their conversation. Also, a person may meet an old friend and they greet each other in English but as soon as they become comfortable they will both start conversing in our native tongue.

To me, freedom of expression means that I have a right to voice my opinion and know one should object. It means that I don't have to be locked up in a box but instead by whatever means possible I can choose to be heard I have a right to do so.

To be in a country where the language is different would be a little odd for me. The only way I would put myself in that position is if it is rather important that I do so. Also, maybe if the persons I live along with speak that other language too I would take the chance since I could learn as I go.

I must admit that I have felt a little odd being around others that speak a language more fluently than I do. The reason is, I might understand much of what they say but sometimes I am unable or doubtful in joining the conversation for fear that I make an error because I misinterpreted what was being said.

I can't think of a favorite character now but I've also read A series of Unfortunate Events. My favorite Character in the story happens to be Klaus, for all he went through with Count Olaf he managed to pull through. He was just smart.

I live with a family of five and also run a business so I am always in verbal communication with someone. I guess the longest I've gone without communicating verbally would be 10-20 minutes, when I have no customer. I can't imagine not speaking for a day, I think i'd get bored.

back in high school I had a pen friend from Germany. I had no knowledge at all of her language but she knew a little English and that was the way we corresponded through writing. She did a lot of messing up and I tried correcting her all the time, which she very much appreciated. I was young and did not think of trying to learn her language, something I regret today.The friendship however, was great.

There has been times when I could have given up studying but I dare not when I have someone to motivate me. My daughter also studies Spanish and she has been my source of inspiration. whenever I complain about not having the time or desire to study she knows just what to do to get me up and going again.

The only unappealing language I can think of right now is French Creole. When used by its natives it sounds very loud and confusing. It could either be because of their accent or the language itself but i am just not liking it.
