  1. French has always been my favorite language. It just sound sweet to the ear. Most other languages will sound like the speaker is upset or arguing but French is quite the opposite. My least favorite Language is Chinese. I hear the Chinese business owners here speak it quite often to each other and it just sounds grouchy and like they are speaking about someone behind their backs.
  2. I think the simplest way to look at it is that your is speaking of ownership and you're is the short form of you are. If you stick to you're being a short form it should be quite easier since it carries an apostrophe.
  3. You are perfectly right. British English is what is acceptable here. We never say learned. Most people who are not familiar with it being American English would most likely give you an X for using it.
  4. I was a bit surprised when I read the list of swear words which Lan. thought weren't swear words. They are definitely swear words and I am yet to think of any similar words which could go as normal words.
  5. @ whnuien, thanks for the information. I didn't know the names of the languages or tribes in Malaysia. So, how many languages and tribes are there in Malaysia?
  6. Unfortunately, I am not as self motivated as you are. I always prefer a group setting for whatever I am studying. However, I always do well even if I study on my own. I am just not easily motivated when I have to do it by myself.
  7. The best method for me when learning a language is normally in a group setting. I grasp more, maybe because I am motivated when i have challenge. During my studying, I always like to be drilled on new topics, which helps me to retain what I have learnt. I believe that you first have to know at least the basics in a language before actually settling in a country that speaks the language you are learning. If you are not fluent enough I would suppose that learning would then become more of a challenge.
  8. I no longer do this but I have used flashcards in the past. I found it to be a convenient way of learning because they are always at hand whenever I needed them and if they are made up of pictures it makes it even easier to remember.
  9. I believe these terms come about based on what is most obvious. If the thing has legs(2 or 4), it stands and if it's something that can spread wide, you say lay. The same would apply when travelling. Although there may be several route to the one destination, you will hear people use, going up, down, around, over and even down under.
  10. It is very different with each person. I would rather learn language with a group than being tutored all by myself. That way I get to interact with others and share, especially on the things that I have difficulty grasping. I think learning all comes down to ones zeal to accomplish.
  11. Amigo-friend I learnt this word from a neighbor years ago, as a little girl. I started saying "mi amigo"(my friend) quite often too and this might have been what inspired me to study Spanish.
  12. These are definitely some common errors made in English. I have certainly caught myself a few times on some of them. It's not that I wasn't aware of the correct word or spelling either, it just happened. Maybe it was an error I made as a child and it's still in my brain but double checking always payoffs most times.
  13. Yes, I have been afraid of learning a language because of my fair of failing. It all comes down to encouraging yourself to take up the challenge in order to prove your doubts wrong and being encouraged by a strong support team of friends and family.
  14. Other than online, I don't do much writing so I haven't used any online writing tool as aid. I usually just look back at what I have done whenever possible and use the grammar rules I remember to do my corrections.
  15. Other see idioms I came across. -Can't see straight- unable to get a full understanding of something. -See for what it is- to get the true meaning of what someone/something really is. -
  16. To my understanding, to have a chip on ones shoulder usually refers to a person who is always angry at others and is very quick to put up a fight. This person becomes that way mainly because he/she feels that in the past or at all times he/she has been treated unfairly by others. Thus, the chip on the shoulder can be looked at as the burden of the past that the person continues to bear.
  17. Cartoon for kids is certainly a good way for them to learn the basics of another language. Children learn everything at a fast rate and they could catch a lot from these cartoons. I hear children in my country speaking Spanish and when I ask them where they learnt those words they told me that it was from watching Dora the Explorer so this method does work.
  18. The easiest way I could explain this is that whether is used in sentences with two or more alternatives. In other words, a decision has to be made between two or more factors. For example, "I don't know whether I want to go." If would then be used for single circumstances.
  19. It takes a lot of reading to improve grammar. If you communicate with someone who doesn't have much problems in grammar you could ask that the person to correct you whenever you err. Also, always edit whenever you write since the errors you make may be something you can figure out with patience.
  20. Not to say octopodes is the wrong English pluralization for octopus but the only one I was familiar with was octopuses. The others I am still not certain would be ok to use in English.
  21. Definitely, is certainly one word that is quite often miss-spelled by native English speakers, even those who already know the correct spelling of the word.I believe that no matter what the rules are in the English language it takes a lot of reading and coming across words to master spelling grammar.
  22. It is true that ei/ie is a common error made in the spelling of English words. When I was in school I was taught the rule and even so I still seldom make that error. The rule says that when the sound is e, ie should be used except in words that it follows after c,example receive. For any sound other than e in a word ei is usually used but there are also words that are still exceptional to that rule.
  23. This is a fact that I always think of too. As a person that uses the British English it can sometimes be frustrating. It may even be that in order to make sure your spelling is correct you would be better off using a dictionary. I think the designers should have alternative spell check so that everyone is accommodated for.
  24. Some of my favorite childhood storybooks are still common today. They are: -Alice in Wonderland -Little Red Riding Hood. -Hansel and Gretel -Cinderella -Rumpelstileskin
  25. It is my belief that catsup may just be a funny name given to ketchup by people of a certain region. I have seen it been used on TV but never formally so that's my guess.
