  1. I agree with you Sidney and that's why I consider Jamaican Creole to be a rare language. There is quite a few Creole around but each is uniquely different making them rare.
  2. Some of these techniques are rather strange. Anyway, I believe that immersion would be the fastest way to learn a foreign language. We all learn by different methods so I do get the various methods.
  3. Most times whenever a person feels that way they are having doubts about their accent because they may want to sound just like the natives of that language. They may also feel unsure about words or phrases. This may just need more mastering of the language or reassurance to change that feeling.
  4. Jamaican Creole is one of the languages I speak. It is quite unique and hearer always show an interest in it and want to learn it too. It is a mixture of several languages and I think it's very easy to learn.
  5. I think you are faced with this problem when you don't always use the language. Not having persons around you who speak the languages you do can makes it a bit challenging to keep up. It is always best to communicate with others in all the languages as often as possible.
  6. It is quite normal to have cross-language when studying multiple languages. I think this will happen even when the language are studied in different time periods. If you don't have a slip of the tongue then it may happen in the mind. You may not be able to do anything about it except be better focused.
  7. This definitely depends on each individuals liking. Everyone has different preferences and experiences and so it would be up to each person to decide what works best for them. However, both can certainly be effective methods of learning.
  8. There are a number of ways he could learn but it all comes down to which he would grasp more easily. My suggestion is, have him do a short course on line and watch a lot of TV. Also try to correspond with him in English more often.
  9. The way you see it would advisably be the best. When you have others around you that you can correspond in the language with over and over you are better able to master the language and do so in a much shorter time.
  10. Apart from English Language, I would have to go for the most obvious which would be Chinese, Spanish and French.
  11. I don't think these parents really know what they could be shunning their children from. I think someone needs to open their eyes to reality because if they allow their children to speak all the languages possible I know these kids will thank them later.
  12. Once when I was in the US on vacation I visited a church that was offering free lessons and from the first class my interest was sparkled. Unfortunately, I didn't come home and complete it and so I have forgotten most of what I learnt but I would be very much interested in fulfilling that goal.
  13. I think that different accents in English can be uniquely beautiful/funny. We watch a lot Nigerian movies here and folks often times try to mimic the accent. There are also other accents that once you've heard them they sort of remain in your head, like Trinidadian and St Vincent.
  14. I am wondering how much effort people who have the opportunity to learn the language and never succeed really put into it. Maybe for some reason they learn but don't practice and so they have a more difficult time remembering the language. I think if that friend erases all he ever learnt in that Russian-English and start a fresh he would better succeed.
  15. I think that learning a second language can prove to be more beneficial rather than not and it should be considered by more elementary schools and remain mandatory in high schools. English is my original language and I started learning a second language in high school for the first time because it was not taught in primary schools then.
  16. Creative writing is really an art and so it is not easily taught. However, I believe that if children are exposed to the topic at an early age it would prove to be less of a challenge. Small children need to be taught to be expressive in their writing and that could make the task more successful.
  17. Writing stories or focusing on one topic is a great way to learn a language. I recall doing a lot of that in high school. The teacher would choose topics like myself, my church, school or community, among others, and we would write on these topics and be graded.
  18. It is true that there are biracial children who speak just one language. I think it is a bit sad because exposing them to both languages could be the best thing that the parents could ever do. This could open up a lot of opportunities for them in the future or even help them to communicate with their relatives on both sides of the family more fluently.
  19. I do think that watching movies is a good way of learning a language but I think it works much better for someone wanting to learn English. I did a lot of that when I just got serious about learning Spanish and it helped greatly when the caption was on.
  20. Yes, I have one friend in particular that speaks the language that I am learning. However, it's been a while since we have spoken. Anyway I have my daughter who is around most of the time. She is not perfect but she is very much farther along than I am. I have never thought of making friends just for the sole purpose of getting aide to master the language, I also feel that it is a bit unfair.
  21. The idiom, "cat got your tongue?" has nothing to do with the same. It is usually directed at someone who may have found themselves in a sticky situation and has frozen and won't speak up or refused to give a response.
  22. Bury the hatchet. This idiom is used in cases where people may be at odds with each other. To bury the hatchet means that you put all the enmity aside and move on.
  23. Quite an interesting video. It can be quite funny when adults speak idioms around small children who then take them literally. Some of them never ask what you mean, they just repeat what was said on other occasions, which can be very humorous.
  24. I always loved short stories as a child and have read quite a few. My favorites being Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel because of the children's courage. However, my favorite short stories as an adult are Rip Van Wrinkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, maybe because they were the first ones I read.
  25. I have only read a few of Shakespeare's books. My favorite happens to be Julius Caesar which I read in 8th grade. Our English teacher was able to help us capture every scene as if we were present and that was quite intriguing.
