How do I make an ASCII animal?

How do I copy and paste a text animal?

Tap Copy, then paste the animal into your chat, post or document. In chat apps that support code blocks, wrap it in three backticks so the lines stay aligned; the Copy for Discord button does that for you.

Why does my text animal look crooked after pasting?

Animals with several lines only line up in a fixed-width font. Put the animal inside a code block, or use a one-line animal or a dot-art animal, which keep their shape in ordinary fonts.

What is the difference between ASCII art and dot art?

How to use the ASCII animal generator

The ASCII animal generator draws an animal out of plain keyboard characters, such as slashes, brackets and an o for each eye, so you can copy it and paste it anywhere you can type. You build yours in four steps:

Pick an animal: 49 to choose from, in five groups (pets and farm, forest, safari and jungle, water, and birds, bugs and legends).
Pick a pose. Every animal has its own, such as sitting, a face and a small version, plus a one-line version (258 drawings in all).
Change the eyes (23 kinds, from happy to sleepy), add a hat (19 to choose from), something next to the animal (15 things, from a heart to a snowman), a second animal for a pair, and a speech bubble.
Tap Copy and paste it anywhere. Random rolls a new animal, and Copy link gives you a link that opens the same one.

The parts combine into more than 5 million different pictures, before you even type a speech bubble. Every animal is our own drawing, so they are free to use anywhere: chats, bios, code comments, README files, greeting cards. For cats there is a generator of its own, the ASCII cat generator.

How to make text animals yourself

You can draw a text animal with nothing but the keyboard. The trick is to draw the one feature that makes the animal and keep everything else as plain as possible. A bear, step by step:

The head. Two brackets with space between them make a round face: ( ). A slash and a backslash above them close the top.
The eyes. Two of the same character, with a gap: o o. Swap them for ^ ^ to make the animal happy, - - to make it sleepy, * * for excitement.
The feature. Round ears on top, () and (), say bear. Long upright ears would say bunny, pointed ones fox, a pair of tufts owl.
The nose or mouth. One small shape in the middle, under the eyes: (_) for a bear’s nose, w or v for most small animals.
The body, if you want one. Repeat the outline of the head a little wider, and end with the feet on one line.

Type it in a fixed-width font, so you see the same picture the reader will. Keep each line the same length where you can, and use characters that come in pairs (( ), / \, < >), so the two halves of the animal match.

Where text animals keep their shape

An animal with several lines needs every character to be the same width. That is true in code editors and code blocks, and not in most chats and posts, where an i is narrower than an m.
