I know about 2000-2500 chinese characters, therefore I know about the same amount of Kanji :=) Still, as I am not very familiar with Japanese and Hiragana/Katakana, I am not very good when it comes to guess the meaning of Japanese texts. :frozen:

hi all I got a question\riddle to think about for all the chinese learning people (and even the natives). What does 之子之之之之道,吾亦知之 ?I had to find out in my 文言 class  It's a grammatically correct sentence. I'm looking forward to hearing some suggestions.

hi all I agree that there are many subforums on linguaholic.com However, the forums should all be collapsible. on every header of the study X forums, you should see (on the right side) a small arrow pointing downwards. If you click on this one, the forum should be collapsible..you can do that with all the forums you don't use..and then just a few forums will remain and you have a much quicker access to all the forums that are important to you. please try that. if that does not work, we will find another way

The chat should not be even there as a link anymore as we decided AGAINST a chat function. I will try to make the link disappear soon. :wacky:

Yesterday in Chinese class 文言, I had the following tongue twister: 之子之之之之道,吾亦知之。 You can have a guess what this means :=) You need some knowledge of 文言 though。

They are able to see whether you used the correct stroke order or not. Especially if you write fast, the character always "blurrs" in the same way. If the stroke order is not natural, they will definitely notice it. However, as far as I know, stroke orders of characters are NOT part of the HSK. There is a writing section but I doubt that they care much about stroke order there.

hmm I have always been wondering why you would use 2 question marks in a sentence instead of one. I just don't get it. The upside down question mark just looks so wierd, when I have first seen this years ago, I thought this was a joke

Have you ever given up on learning a language?
linguaholic replied to melisapink's topic in Language Learning
I studied Japanese at university for half a year. I dropped it after that for several reasons. However, I am pretty sure I am going to learn that language at a later stage. It makes me so sad to think about all the time I invested in that language and then I just dropped it and forgot almost everything about it. I guess the most important thing about learning a language is having some goal. I did not have that at this time and therefore I did not have the necessary motivation to keep on going -

配药还好。最重要的就是要记好多药名。 你住再加州。你来了美国多久? 我住再波特阑。我的中文不太好。请多多见谅。 你打错了。应该是:你住在加州。你来了美国多久。我住在波特阑。我的中文不太好。 -
Dear all I am very happy to announce that a new rank system has been implemented on linguaholic.com. Based on post count you will get a nice language badge. As you probably already noticed, this badge will be displayed under the medals and is always related to your post count. There are about 12 badges in total for the moment. Not all of them are "in use" yet, as one will need a very high post count to attain those later ranks :=)) Hope you like them! I do!

What do you think about multiple choice tests/exams?
linguaholic posted a topic in Language Learning
I have been wondering what you think about multiple choice exams/tests. I often have the feeling that teachers / universities / schools just do multiple choice tests because this is the easiest way to make a test as it does not demand a lot of time for making the corrections. I'm not generally against multiple choice tests but in my opinion, they are often not appropriate or "useful" as they just test "passive learning", if you know what I mean. If not, let me explain. In a multiple choice test you can often get answers right just because you can remember that one thing or another has been mentioned in previous lessons/lectures etc, but you actually could not write this down if you would have to do so (which would be the case in a proper exam where you have to write down answers in form of complete texts and so on); so, you just need to know stuff passively and chances are still pretty good that you can recall the answer from your memory when reading the questions and possible answers in multiple choice tests  -
I usually feel pretty nervous, but as soon as the exams started I am like in trance and not nervous at all anymore. I just forget the world around me and can usually concentrate 100 percent on the exam. :karate:

Vor etwa 10 Jahren hatte ich einen guten Freund und ich plante mit ihm zusammen zu leben. Die Angelegenheit war jedoch äussert kompliziert/schwierig und so kam es schlussendlich nicht dazu. If you got some questions regarding my corrections, please let me know :wacky: -
