  1. Hi all I would like to add the Kanji for all those expressions: Hajimema****e - Nice to meet you. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu - Please be kind to me.
  2. I like Scottish and Irish the most. I don't know that much about them but whenever I hear them I am really enjoying myself  Would you like me to add a poll for this question as well? So all of you could give your vote and we could see in relation about the popularity of different English dialects.
  3. I am going to add a poll for this. So you can all give your vote and let the others know what you think is the most romantic language!!!
  4. yes, it is entirely free. If you browse the forum for "duolingo", you will find several other threads talking about that really cool homepage. You should give it a go. Please note while using the search form on linguaholic.com, you would first need to get back to the main forum page and then click on search, if not, not all search results will appear.
  5. When talking about lists, it might also come in handy to know about the differences in American English and British English: In British English you would say: Bread, milk and cheese In American English you would say: Bread, milk, and cheese
  6. As you are talking about learning German by using CD's from the Grimm brothers, I would like to recommend the GRIMM Online Dictionary. It is an amazing dictionary with priceless entries (most of them being rather old, therefore containing precious and some unique infos). If you are interested in it, you can find the Grimm dictionary here: http://woerterbuchnetz.de/DWB/
  7. Hi Bluntashell That really sounds interesting! I would love to do my master degree in China as well, however I am not sure if it is going to be possible :=) How is your Chinese level then? Are you still a beginner or already a PRO :=) best wishes Marcel
  10. Erzähl uns doch bitte hier von deinen schönsten Ferien! Was sind deine schönsten Erinnerungen? Was hast du sonst noch so erlebt?
  11. The sentence "Ich war insgesamt drei Mal in Deutschland" translated to English would be: In total, I have been three times to Germany. So insgesamt means "in total". You can also just say "Ich war drei Mal in Deutschland" without the "insgesamt". However, in my opinion, it sounds better with "insgesamt" but it is, after all, just a matter of style in this case! Don't worry too much about it.
  12. Welcome Lori! Thank you for joining linguaholic.com and for introducing yourself! Hope you will have a great time here! If you should have any questions about the forums, do not hesitate to contact me or any of the loyal moderators here on linguaholic.com best wishes Marcel
  14. Of course it would be possible to integrate a chat. I have been thinking about this for quite a long time and I decided against it. Why? The main focus and aim of this forum are language learning and all kind of questions and thoughts about languages. All the members benefit from each other as everybody can see all the posts in all the forums. If I would integrate a chat function, people would be most likely just talk about different things and even if they would talk about linguistics and such, the majority of people here could not benefit from it. By integrating a language exchange forum, it will still be very easy for members to make friends and exchange skype/msn/telephone number etc./ and then they can get to know each other better using PM's on linguaholic.com or maybe talk to each other in Skype or so. I do encourage people to make friends here but all the conversations that are not about languages should be led somewhere else or in PM's. Moreover, a chat service Eats tons of resources. Now we are counting 200 members here and that would still be ok. However, in a year or two, the community will most likely count 1000-3000 members or even more and it would cost a fortune to get all the chat conversations going (would need several servers to maintain it). Hopefully you can all understand why a chat is not a good option for this place here! regards Marcel
  15. Hy Oakster! Welcome to linguaholic.com! I am sure you will be able to pick up some French and German here on the boards. There are some people that are interested in Portuguese...it would be nice if you could teach them a thing or two in return! See you around! best wishes
  16. Hi there To upload an avatar, click on profile on the top of the page and then choose forum profile. There, you can click on "change avatar" on the left side and then upload one :=) hope that helps and of course, welcome to linguaholic.com !!!
  17. Hi all Would just like to let you know that I added a literature sub forum to all the existing languages. You can talk there about books in the respective language (books and other texts originally written in that language!) Hope you will enjoy it.
  18. Of course complete immersion is not possible or desirable for everyone, however, I think that it is most likely the best method to learn a language. "Complete immersion" can be pretty difficult and not very pleasant at times. You will need lots of courage, time and self-confidence. I am pretty sure that Khazumotos method would work for almost everyone, but it is a little bit extreme that is true. I like it though :=) The method is also applicable for every other language, doesn't really matter whether it is Japanese or Chinese or Korean or French.
  19. Did anybody of you guys came across this page here, yet ? http://www.kanjiposter.com/ My brother has one of two posters and I have two at home:=) They come in really handy to study characters and also it gives you a nice feeling to have them hanging on your wall. You also have the possibility to write on the poster and then later you can remove it (don't know how to explain this in English hehe). I might do a competition soon on linguaholic.com and the winner will get a Kanji Poster. The competition could be something rather trivial like: "The person that provides the most valuable content during one month will earn this prize. I have been thinking about this kind of competition for quite a long time and I might start it in October. Kanji Poster is one possible prize. There will be other prizes that are not language-related, maybe an Amazon Voucher for 50 euros or something like that. Stay tuned ^^
  21. The character for man (male) 男 is really easy to remember because it basically shows a field (the square with the cross in it and the part above which is 力 and stands for power, strength. So combined it shows a field and the attribute strenth/power, which of course is referring back to the time when men (mostly, but not only of course) had to work hard out in the fields.
  22. Sounds great. We should probably create some more threads in this section here, so we could talk about all kind of things, like: Hobbies, Entertainment, Holidays and so on. Please also feel free to correct my English! Thank you!
  23. Are you talking about traditional Characters or about Classical Chinese (文言). If you are talking about the latter, I am willing to share some info about it. Tomorrow will be my first 文言 lesson at university ! I am super excited as I love the professor who is teaching 文言。He just literally knows everything about China and Chinese, I am sure I will learn all sorts of interesting things about 文言!
  24. This topic has been moved to Spanish Language // General Discussion Thread. [iurl]http://linguaholic.com/index.php?topic=510.0[/iurl]
